    Hi guys! I wanted to make a video of my current experience at ACCD since the animation program is so new and I've been getting questions about it. Please watch the whole thing, or read below, before asking any questions.
    And please remember, this is only my personal experience! It will be different for everyone!
    Forgot to say in the video, when I showed the schedule all the pink classes are optional, all the others are mandatory.
    Also, the first 2 terms, 2D animation is done only on paper. Third term is when there's a switch to digital.

    Here is a copy paste of an email I wrote to a prospective student in case any of you guys prefer reading over listening:
    In my opinion, I've been enjoying ACCD! But it's also pretty... Heavy. Before we get into classes, this is definitely a school where u need good time management. Each term you have 6 classes, most of which will be 5 hours long each (with lots of breaks ofc). For your first two years the classes are mostly fixed (u can see the class curriculum on the website) though you can negotiate a class or two depending on what you want. (They also just started offering stop motion classes!)
    After the first two years is when you really get to specialize in what you want to do. Student films are also group projects, not independently done.
    The classes I've had so far pretty much teach u a bit of everything for the animation industry. The first 2 terms (aka semester- each is 14 weeks) 2D animation is completely on paper, but our teacher worked at Disney on movies like Hercules and the lion king! He was very encouraging.
    Storyboards come in a bit later, there's none of it first term, but then you dabble in it in second term in the story class (in which u develop a story, and then make a short animatic- though it's focused more on writing than drawing).
    Term 3 (which I will be entering in the fall) is when you get shorts prep, in which you start doing storyboards, and start ur own pitch (I believe). There's also a layout class, which is in 3D but ultimately will be a big help for storyboards.
    The great thing about this school is that it's pretty big, and you can take classes from other majors (it can be hard tho, since students from that major get priority).
    For me personally, it was honestly the most affordable too. They can give a pretty good scholarship if your portfolio and grades are good enough. (if ur still not satisfied with it tho, u can send an appeal letter to get even more aid- just do it before u agree to it)
    Oh! Also animation classes don't really run during the summer term- u can take ur academics or other non animation classes tho. But most of us take it off........
    Portfolio day huh? I think they do participate in those! (they also do tours of the campus) so you should definitely go to those. And yeah the intern shows are available for all entertainment design majors! While most companies that visit are more concept based, ACCD said they will try to invite more animation companies for the upcoming shows (every spring). Intern shows are also optional to apply to.
    ACCD does also invite artists all the time for talks (and sometimes signings) and I've been to a few it's pretty cool! They also have free workshops to learn programs like the ones in the adobe suite and stuff like bookbinding where you just gotta pay for materials. But like, yeah theres always events, many of which have free food heh (but unfortunately the cafeteria food isn't cheap).
    And that's it for the copy paste!
    Hope this helped!

    This was so helpful!! I was thinking of going back to school and stressing out cause the other art schools are almost an hour away from me, and I didnt know if Art Center was good cause no one really talks about it, but now I'm a lil less stress and excited to apply!! The good thing is it's only 20 min away from me too 😂

      It’s a great school! No one talks about it bc animation is still VERY new here, the first anim student didn’t graduate until I was a year in- so you should start seeing more from the school soon!

Just write them that it's your first pic college + some financial documents to prove ur situation)

      Hi there! I'm glad it helped! Though I'm not an international student so I don't really know how things would work for you, sorry! But I know you can email ACCD for those sorts of questions!
      Mentorships are pretty straightforward though, you just need approval from your mentor and the school to get it. However I think you need to be at least 5th term or so to apply? Though exceptions can be made depending.

    Hello! This video was very informative, I subscribed also because your art is super pretty! I am currently in 11th grade and I'm starting to look for art schools to attend. You mentioned how Art Center was your cheapest option so I would like to know what were your other options so I could compare and contrast. Thing is, I am not from the United States, I'm from Latin America, so schools are much much harder to afford, so I really need to analyze my options as much as I can because I don't want my family to be in debt for something that might not be worth it. If you have some extra time, may you answer some questions regarding Art Center? Only if it's okay though, thank you :)

    • @rustisntpunk
      @rustisntpunk  3 года назад

      Thank you! I’d say the second best option for me was LCAD, their tuition is the lowest overall but the scholarship isn’t that high, so it still ended up being more than ACCD (plus it’s a smaller school)... SCAD offers a couple fulls rides but unless u get it I would honestly not recommend that school for a few reasons...but other than that the other colleges are p expensive unfortunately... tho if ur international it’s a bit harder to get scholarships (?) so def check out LCAD! But yeah lmk if u have any other questions! :>

      Hey! Unfortunately the industry right now is going through a bit of a drought- even the pros are struggling but the industry works like a pendulum so it should pick up again at some point. Also I’m not sure- after I got my acceptance letter I was emailing the financial office to get a higher scholarship before I accepted, so maybe like two weeks

    • @rustisntpunk
      @rustisntpunk  4 года назад +2

      Morgan Martinez I know there's some Students who manage to work and support themselves, but it's very stressful, especially since rent near the school is expensive (and if u live further away for cheaper rent transportation is another problem) ACCD does offer a little food support, and on campus jobs, but that might not be enough. You may have to take out extra loans for bills, but I'm sure you'd rather avoid that. So yeah, it's possible with some good time management, but it'd be quite difficult, I wish you the best of luck though!

    Hey thank for making this video, i have several questions;
    1). Is the high amount of money worth it?
    2). Is it welcoming for non U.S. students?
    3). What items do you have to prepare for this school? (Wacom, ipad, etc..)
    4). How does it feel to study during the pandemic? Is it worth it?

    • @rustisntpunk
      @rustisntpunk  3 года назад

      Thanks for watching! As for my answers
      1) this depends on the person! ACCD was my cheapest option, and I personally know I need a class environment to learn so self study was not an option for me.
      2) yes! A large portion of the students here are international, they might even be the majority!
      3) I have a Wacom Cintiq and iPad, but any tablet will be fine
      4) Hmm my tuition was reduced during online, so yeah it was worth it. Was also nice to sleep in and not have to commute- but it does feel more isolating. Overall it was okay once I adjusted, but it can be hard to not stay in bed more 😅

    hi Rust, thank you so much for making this video!! Do you think the animation track is good for visdev? I'm confused because I see visdev graduates often come from the entertainment arts track, but the animation track is under entertainment design...So would visdev be under concept art since it's basically concept art for animation? But then again it looks like the concept art students all have live action/games/film styles. Are there no visdev artists in the concept track? I tried looking at the course curriculum and descriptions but now I'm even more confused ;-;

    • @rustisntpunk
      @rustisntpunk  2 года назад

      Basically entertainment design has 3 tracks including concept and animation. If you want to focus solely on visdev, go for concept. Animation has visdev classes but most of the curriculum is doing 2D/3D animation. But if you want to focus doing visdev for animation then do animation bc yeah concept is mostly for games/film but I think you can design with animation in mind too- depends on the student. Also you can take classes from other majors if you want

    • @user-ly8hz3iy6j
      @user-ly8hz3iy6j 2 года назад

      @@rustisntpunk Sorry I'm confused, visdev means concept for animation right? So are you saying the animation track is best for visdev despite having 2d/3d animation-heavy curriculum? What do you mean by focusing solely on visdev?
      My understanding is there are the 3 tracks within entertainment design and also the entertainment arts under illustration. This also makes sense to me that visdev artists come from ent arts because visdev is more illustration based, but the artists I was looking at graduated before the animation major started.
      Thank you so much for responding! 😭

    • @rustisntpunk
      @rustisntpunk  2 года назад

      @@user-ly8hz3iy6j visdev is visual development and is for any visual media- not just animation. Also illustration is it’s own major, the 3rd track in entertainment design is Game Design. I recommend looking at the work from both concept and animation students so you can see which you’d prefer doing. If you go in animation you will be doing a lot more than just visdev and you’ll be making multiple films from start to finish. If you don’t want to make films and just focus on making concept art, go into concept. Concept is more intense though than animation. It has a heavier workload and you’ll be doing a lot more studies from life. If you want to do visdev solely for animation though you gotta weigh your options

      kelly
      Of course!
      Concept art- focus on design, rendering, painting and perspective. Storytelling within design/composition. This is entirely VisDev, geared towards working in preproduction for feature animation or video games.
      Animation- basically everything within both 2D and 3D animation pipelines, both preproduction and production. Focus on animation ofc! There’s classes that include story, design, and concept but geared more for TV animation (for the 2D classes at least) and you work on group animated shorts/films.
      No matter what you are able to take classes from other majors so long as there’s a seat available and you have permission!
