Here's the thing: laundry and dishes aren't chores, they're cycles. You clean the stuff to put it away to use it to clean it, etc. I think it's much easier to do them that way
There is no way to look at chores or cycles, that makes them better. Especially not with my family. We go OUT to eat for dinner and *still* somehow wind up with a sink full of dishes by midnight....somehow. THey are never ending here lol. I legit loathe doing dishes.
I watched this back when it came out, and I am 18 currently, and this video hit so hard. Last semester, I went to university for physics and math and I was dead the entire way through right from the beginning. Like those two were my favourite subjects, and I was failing. It literally destroyed me. I've never had such a hard time, and everyone around me seemed like they were doing great. Like what was wrong with me? I realized late into the semester that it was okay to just calm down, and work on yourself. I wasnt failing because I was stupid -it was the 'boss' in my head that'd berate me constantly. By the end of the sem, my life got improved when I just let myself be free. Giving myself some love was the only reason I passed. Growing up means you're your own boss, but when that boss hates the shit out of you, you'd remember how nice it was when someone else who cared about you was in control. But I do want my own life, and I guess understanding how to love yourself is apart of adulthood.
literally same, i watched it when it came out and i turned 18 and watching this again so many things I didn't understand back then started to hit hard like being on the grind non stop and giving yourself time.
Ahhh 18 dude you have a whole decade of living life like you are in a cool aesthetic slide of life anime, if I had a button to just stop biologically aging an stay 26 I'd do that right now I like being in my 20s ahshdhz
When working from home, try to put your workspace in a separate room from your living space. Otherwise, work will always feel physically present around you, which can add to that “I need to work all the time” anxiety. It’s not healthy. Take care of yourself. I love you.
This is a good practice. Also, as an adult... don't play on your phone in bed. Same idea. That's a place for sleeping. Separating it from distractions will help you rest. Trust me, you'll need it.
I'm 26 and living alone for the past 7 years.. gotta tell you it's a big relief to know others are the same. anyway, you can get better even if you're older and alone. that didn't come off right..

You'll find your passion. I've been lost searching for what has felt like ages, coming to closed doors and missed opportunities. But so long you don't quit looking, you're bound to find something. Maybe try thinking about what truly makes you happy in life, is it money or your own happiness? I pursue music in hopes of being happy and living a fulfilled life, whether I have money or not because I am passionate about it. It took years to muster up the courage to do it, but I promise once you get there you will feel euphoria. Just keep swimming my friend, water might be rough but it's a constant stream down the way.
I remember being in my mid-20s and having no idea, being overwhelmed and afraid of life. But at the same time, I had the most fun ever between 25 and 32. Now that I'm in my mid-30s, I'm more focused on my career, having a nice home and my relationship. On the weekends I hardly go out to have fun, it's more like, "I need to fix my yard, it needs to be ready for summer parties!". But yea... all in all I see life more relaxed. There are still parts that I'm confused or clueless about, but I realized that we all just have no idea about certain areas of life, so just ask around. Someone will know the answer to your problem, just as you have some advice for others.
Fun fact: this is because the companies that do your tax returns pay politicians to keep it this way. One of the many reasons that non-anonymous political donations should be illegal.
As an 18 year old who started working a full time job not long ago everything you said is 110% accurate I also get hungry and then never know what to eat
Puberty Platypus's last segment was so realistic. Everyone expects that after high school one's vision for life would clear up no matter how little it does but it really hits you hard when you don't really feel any different than you did back then.
For me media addiction also compounds these issues since I don't really get anything done despite having no obligations (maybe that'spart of the problem)
I spoke a former teacher a while back. She's 42 and she still isn't sure if she wants to be a teacher for the rest of her life. It both was and wasn't reassuring that no one ever really knows what they're passionate about

It ran the gamut from learning about taxes, planning a budget, making a résumé, and all the other things we would need as soon as we got out of school. I think some cooking was involved but I don’t quite remember.

Thank you so much for voicing all of the things that are in the back of my head about content creation. I've really begun to realize how important it is to balance content creation with in-person connections.
I really appreciate hearing "it's ok to work on yourself". I've been going to a really pushy high school, and I have really struggled to keep a healthy work balance. I'm either a workaholic, or a huge procrastinator and you can imagine the difficulty of that duality. But then I remind myself thats ok. To any of you starting high school right now, know this: It's to hang out with your friends and do your own thing, but also be responsible abd keep track of key dates. I may not have it perfectly balanced myself but I'm trying, and in the end thats all we can do.
What I’ve done to get past all that is sleep as soon as you get home after work no phone no nothing. Yes it’s going to be hard but hey life is hard. No food stops too just go straight home and sleep.
I still live with my parents because my dad has Parkinson's disease. Even if he is on a long term hospitalization plan right now I choose to tackle my house chores and responsibilities creatively. Despite this video was made 2 years ago, I didn't get to be in your shoes of moving out of your parents house expected to do many chores, taxes, bills, and etcetera. For those of you in your 20's now, let's all agree on one thing that we can feel behind at times. My best advice is to write a diary/journal and never to put a spotlight on ourselves rather to work on your current well-being. Otherwise thanks odd ball for making this video. I enjoy watching your videos and your Odd Ball series on Netflix is really not bad at all! Consider this my gratude and compliment!

About to turn 19, been watching you since I was in middle school, THE TIRED EVEN THOUGH YOU GET 8 HOURS OF SLEEP IS SO REAL IVE BEEN WONDERING IF SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH ME THANK U FOR THIS VIDEO
I try to do this with my own highschool students. I give them random advice on being an adult that pops into my head. Like how to start a business and open an LLC so that you can minimize what you owe in taxes while also tracking your separate income sources. Plus your business can be used for tons of write-offs which will save you money as well. Then you can start a SEP-IRA to grow your money much faster than a bank without having to make risky stock investments or guessing on crypto-currency
I really needed to hear this. I'm a College Freshman and graduated last year, so those were the exact words I needed to hear because frankly I've been anxious about growing up
no, ‘puberty videos’ for girls are more like: “hey guys, you’re gonna want to cry all the time and that’s perfectly natural!” and then they give you a list of everything you’re gonna want to cry over
no they'll tell you it's natural, but then you go into society and men ask you why you're so sensitive all the time or make fun about you being emotional. so hm. school tells me something but society tells me something else.
The puberty platypus at the end was definitely me at this moment ✋😭 The amount of stress 😭 I felt that "what went wrong" fr fr because that's how I've been thinking for the past four years.
Having your own boss in your head and always feeling like you should be working when doing anything but work is extremely relatable. We just don't know when to pause.
I'm glad there is someone with a big platform of young people talking about the importance of work like balance, and the importance of avoiding burnout. Great video :)
This video is 100% accurate. The only thing he didn't mention is how difficult it is to go outside and be social, like you start losing friends and you have so little money to spend, also less time, not to mention that being burn out makes it really hard to find the energy to socialize, finding love is also very difficult because of how people are viewing relationships nowadays. And then your life starts to revolve around work and coffee and series you're watching.
I'm sorry, but... How do people view relationships nowadays. I'm a bit of a old soul perhaps, I'm 25, but what do the mainstream youth view it as? Sure, your answer could hold some local biases, and I'm ok with that
@@mr.boomguy As a young adult who's 19 I'd say that people in our generation have unreasonably high standards in general well atleast from my experience. With social media like tiktok and instagram influencing teens these days, people got their own fked up values and beliefs lol and most of my friends who're in uni would throw the largest fit over the smallest of things cause they're so used to being in their comfort zone that even minor obstacles seem like the end of the world lmao. Relationships require sacrifices and are built upon heaps of trust but idt the majority of this generation would be up for it lmao. This is just my opinion from my life experiences growing up in an international skl w diff cultures but yeah take it w a grain of salt.
I watched this when I was 16 not understanding any of this. Now I'm a struggling college student who's been having to deal with a lot & I completely relate to this! I keep it on my watch later to remind myself every once & a while to keep going & to listen to my gut.
6:32 I’m 16 and almost 17 Why does this hit so close to home already!!? By the way thanks for this video James, I think it can also apply for young people going from their childhood going on to their later teens.
Ive got 2 months till im 17, and covid sent all my job plans to hell, so this video talking about getting basically thrown into the void by school is sounding more and more likely, which is terrifying.
Definitely can relate to the working at home limbo. You forget about socializing and well, living. And that really hits you, sooner or later haha. Great video James!
Hola. nerdayli no preguntaré porque haces aquí sino como aprendiste ingles 🤔 y bro quiero ver el resumen de espaiderman no wey hom cuando salga gracias y adios
Wicked excited for the video but for one second can we pause? Am I the only one who genuinely enjoys doing laundry, dishes and cleaning my apartment? I just put on a podcast and get going and get some weird simplistic satisfaction from it. Don't get me wrong it's not my favorite thing to do in the whole world, I'd rather be at the gym or playing video games, but I honestly enjoy it. Same with cooking. If I had to give advice to anyone entering adulthood it would be the following: Learn how to enjoy the mundane repetitive maintenance tasks of life, this can be via music, podcasts, whatever, but learn to enjoy those moments or you'll be miserable for a good part of everyday.
I'm moving out soon for uni, and when James said, "it is, genuinly upsetting, that I have to figure out, what i have to eat 3 times a day," I already feel that planning out what I'm going to make every week when I move loll.
Do it - shopping and cooking with a weekly Plan reduces food waste and prevents you from cooking spaghetti with tomato sauce on in an endless loop lol.
I think that it's just going to make it worse by you feeling the need to do that one extra thing. But fortunately, that's only the case if you're a procrastinator :|
“With great power comes great responsibility.” I feel like this sums up adult life decently well. You get more power to do what you want, but also you’ve got more responsibilities to deal with. It’s a trade off.
Your mid twenties sound much more relaxing then mine. But I'll chime in here with my 2 cents. You're absolutely right about work-life balance, im 26 and have the damn back and spine health of a 50 yr old. Tore my body apart for both someone elses gain and then my own unhealthy outlook on what it ment to work hard once I was self-employed. You only have one body, please take care of it!
As a 20 year old struggling through my end of year exams, this really hits home. The burnout is WAY too real, and I can't wait to start prioritising myself and my friendships in a few days. Thank you for this James
START PRIORITZING YOURSELF NOW hahaha, not just in a few days! (I also have heavy exams - just take little mental breaks to help yourself (: ) The only person that will take care of you is YOU.
Honestly, wish this kind of talk was told in high school too. Most advise middle schoolers get is “the work will get harder” “show up to class” “don’t forget your pencil”, but I wish they would tell you about the social stuff too, and be more honest and realistic. “Hey, that one homework assignment that will take 3 hours to complete is worth only 5 points and you understand the material anyway. Go cherish your time with your friends at their Halloween party, don’t waste your time on that assignment. When y’all go off to college or work, it’ll be harder to see each other. Make sure to have fun and not work yourself to death. Don’t worry about perfection. It’ll be fine.”
I wish they taught you how to function in this society as an adult. They don't teach finance, cooking, or taxes. Instead, they teach history, sociology, and _literature_ of all things. Every person in the country has to learn how to manage their money, make food, and do their own taxes, by themselves or from their parents. I will never understand why such irrelevant information about the world is prioritized over information that is needed by every person in this country to complete tasks that they must do hundreds or thousands of times throughout their life. What on earth is going on?
@@johnnyvivic8730 well that's what guardians/parents are for imo. If schools taught all life skills, the only things parents/guardians could do is supply them with love, shelter, food, and money. It kinda gives some time for bonding (in my experience ofc). It does make sense to at least have an option, though, seeing as some parents aren't exactly - the best.

5:34 "folding dishes and cleaning laundry" 😆. Anyways, love your videos. 🙂
