Foster must be the best of the artistic descendants of Howard Pyle. I bet he influenced the illustrator and comic artist Barry Windsor-Smith, who seems to be doing work that is very like what Foster used to do. As a kid in the 50s I was fascinated with Prince Valiant.
We are having two Hal Foster Prince Valiant hardcover books from the 70s being restored by a bookbinder. It takes a few weeks and we are excited how the result will be! Childhood memories!

Frazetta is terrific in his own right but he has none of Foster's subtlety.
