Been to Brewster many times over the years but only to fight the fires. I’ve always seen people fishing there and always wanted to try it. Maybe I can talk Blake in to making a trip over there this coming summer (2023) to fish it for a couple days.
Absolutely great video. Super informative. I am heading up to the Brewster pool Tuesday afternoon camping for two nights and fishing Wed. And Thursday morning. Thanks Hope to see there
Thanks for the videos. I’ve been using your sliding cannonball on one rod and downrigger with the other for Kokanee and so far its been a draw. Can’t thank you enough for sharing. Wish I had had a tutorial like this before fishing Port Albernie four years ago as a new kayak angler.
My wife and I call you the professor. :) Thanks for all the great info! I like to know the why behind the how and you do a better job than most at that.
First report on the reds I've seen this year. I'm heading over there tomorrow and was worried the water temp wasn't quite warm enough to stop them but that doesn't seem to be the case. Thanks man!
Great video. I learned a lot. I just need to know more about knives. What’s the best way to sharpen a knife? I have a hard time with that. What type of knife is easy to sharpen? Mine gets dull quickly.
Good question. A lot depends on hardness and thickness of the steel used by the manufacturer. My Victornix blades are easy to sharpen using a steel bar between each fish because its a softer steel but they dull faster. I have a Kershaw blade that is really difficult to sharpen but holds an edge much longer. There are some really good sharpeners from Work Sharp that use small belts that can put an incredible edge on your blade if you opt to use one of those.
Steelhead used to be good on the Methow nearby in the fall and winter but those days are long gone. King fishing is still good in the same body of water now.
Does the boat activity on the water change much depending on the day of the week? I am headed up that way this summer, but I can do weekends or weekdays. I figure weekdays are better but also figured I'd ask. Thanks for your content too, BTW. I didn't know jack about trolling and finally limited on kokes last weekend. They are a lot better than the trout from the lake I was on, that's for sure.
Quick question: Do you bump your line size up from 10lb test that is typical with Kokanee fishing? Thanks for all the super great videos. I've been kokanee fishing my whole life and I've still learned a lot here.
With it so hot during the sockeye season, what do you do with the fish after you catch them? We do well with lead core 4 rods all day long sliver dodger, 8' leader 2 red hooks
How late into August can you expect decent fishing for sockeye and Kings in the Brewster pool? Heading over to Bridgeport on the 15th and was thinking of trying it out. Love your videos!
@@spiltmilt I was hoping to fish osoyoos lake for them this summer but it doesn’t sound like there will be an opening. I had a blast fishing there last August
Wow what a great video Thank you. After this one and the one you posted last week, I'm inspired to bring my fishing kayak next week. My wife and daughters are going to Taylor Swift and I was planning on a fishing adventure. Is there anything i should know before I haul my kayak and trailer from Alberta? 😀. Thanks again!
I cover most the tackle in this video and my more recent ones. Spinners have been catching a little better this year. Went out this morning and got 3 and lost a few more before 10 AM.
@@spiltmilt definitely. Talked to a guy who works at the dam...should be slowing down this coming week. If you ever make it down. The mouth of the entiatb gas been hot the past few evenings for kings
Spilt Milt Productions haha we did but I didn’t think you would remember because of all the other boats but we were in the silver Northwest Jet and we talked about Kokanee for a bit
Yes normally I run the Gamakatsu Finesse Wide Gap for Sockeye but in the video I am experimenting with the Matzuo Sickle Octopus which has a very strong offset and deep angle bend and I've been really impressed with its performance and affordability right now. amzn.to/2ZG4py8
@@spiltmilt I have used the Matzuo and have found them to be brittle on Chinook. For Sockeye I bet they work. I like the Owner No Escape hooks as well, they seem to be stronger than Matzuo. I will have to try the Wide Gap. Sometimes I like to mix hooks on a two rig, like put the Finesse in front and a Sickle in the back. Take care an thanks for the video!
I catch Sockeye from shore on the lower Columbia by plunking for them with spin-n-glos and shrimp. Kokanee are very difficult to catch from shore reliably.
Its great for the diversity of fisheries I participate in. I feel like the Topwater 120 PDL is a great all purpose boat. If I was spending more time trolling on bigger water or the ocean I'd be looking hard at the Salty PDL
Right now I am really loving my Old Town Topwater 120 PDL. When fishing tandem with my wife I use the Hobie Oasis. I really don't like the Oasis it doesn't have sufficient storage space, is not transducer ready, has a terrible turning radius BUT its the only tandem pedal driven kayak on the market with two drives and steering capabilities at each position that I can cartop.
Hmmm. There are several campgrounds nearby at Bridgeport and Alta Lake and I often see people parking and sleeping in their rigs at the Rat Lake ramp parking just 10 minutes outside town.
why you almost fish with two rods .. I know that are most chances to catch a fish, but my point is that I saw your vids and you dont stop peddaling because your other rod... and your body is all of it twisted because you dont stop peddaling because your other rod. Im just asking with no intention to offend any body, it looks like u dont enjoy the fish you hooked because all the worries about the other line. Enjoy every fish men... forget about the count, enjoy every minute on water even if you catch just weeds. Good luck.. and good fishing
I fish to catch fish. It more than doubles your chances because the more flash you have going the more it draws the Sockeye in. I don't stop pedaling for two reasons: 1.) By keep forward momentum I maintain pressure on the fish making it harder for them to throw the hook. 2.) There are literally hundreds of boats around me. If I were to stop I would block trolling lanes, potentially get run over, and at a minimum create chaos. It would be impolite to stop pedaling. I still have a very enjoyable time on the water but that's because I fish to catch fish...not weeds.

That's awesome!

I’m hitting the pool possibly this weekend and if not definitely in the next week or 2. Learned a lot from your vids. I’ll be in the 106MK!

The 15th isn't too late. The last week of August things really taper off.
@@spiltmilt Thanks for the reply, really appreciate it! I think we'll give it a try.
Hi Tyler, I’m wondering if you know what the run size for this fishery is predicted to be for 2021
155,000 fish for the Columbia. We may or may not get a 1 or 2 fish limit in the Brewster pool.

Another good video! Did you have any luck at beebee bridge that day for kings?
Lost one at the boat and had a couple grabs. The current has been tough down there.

Might be a dumb question: as an Oregon resident can you fish that area with an Oregon license/tags, or do you need to have Washington license?
You need a Washington license for Brewster Pool.
How deep was she water when yo lu caught the first fish on this video brother?
How is it dealing with the other boats out there?
It's a pain but you get used to it
could you fish this with a paddle kayak or would that be too much of a handful?
Absolutely I have friend who has been slaying Sockeye from his paddle kayak. He runs one rod to keep things easy.
I know this is an old video, but I was curious why you take the head off the shrimp? Anyone know?
Because the shrimp were too big and smaller baits get more bites

I know this is a late comment but what’s the difference between landlocked sockeye and Kokanee? I thought they were the same thing?
They are. These are anadromous Sockeye. They swim up the Columbia and eventually up the Okanogan into Canada where they spawn.
@@spiltmilt ah ok thank you for the clarification of that for me!
Any suggestions on where to park and sleep in my truck overnight in Brewster area?

@@spiltmilt OK, thanks!
What brand are the rod holders on the Old Town?
RAM Mounts
Are they still bitting
Yes
Sockeye Season is closed July 2023
Closed to you maybe 😂 more fish for me!
Why troll at different speeds in different directions? Lets see some ocean content this summer!
Because in one direction you are trolling with the current and the other against. The speed of the water affects the action of the dodger.
Do you prefer to not gut you catch. Just bleed them and then filet at home.
No I don't gut. Gutting provides more opportunity for bacteria to make its way into the meat. I just keep them cold and process at home.
Can you fish from the bank?
No its a boat fishery
