Interesting, I never considered the formation plane to be a storage bus but it makes sense.
Whenever I use them, I just filter on the formation and annihilation planes; however it's interesting to see their behaviour with the subnetworks.

Two filostorm videos in one day? This is insane
Formation/Annihilation planes are pretty obtuse. Although it's pretty common to use subnets to automate more complicated things in AE2, it's unfortunate that it's a requirement for Formation planes.
In addition to the drop items mode which I feel like isn't that well known, in later versions Annihilation Planes can be enchanted with Fortune which can often make good ore processing (can't apply apotheosis gems though so a fake player will still have a leg up).
There are a few very notable alternatives to Formation planes that are available in most packs: Integrated Tunnels and the RFTools Builder. The Integrated Tunnels World Block Importer/Exporter provides similar block placing/breaking functionality to the AE2 Planes, but they have several key differences: 1) they act actively instead of passively, 2) they have pretty advanced builtin filtering (unfortunately the world block importer cannot filter based on tile entity nbt without external parts), 3) they can be set to silk touch or not, 4) in newer minecraft versions, they can have their maximum offset upgraded so one world block importer/exporter can service multiple blocks in world (the offset can even be set dynamically using variables), 5) in niche cases, the player simulator can break blocks with a specific tool or apply/un-apply a cardboard box/dolly/whatever.
The rftools builder offers insane flexibility, it can place or (filtered) break blocks in a cuboid or custom shape, or it can copy a structure built in a different marked cuboid. The former mode can be used to automate pure daisies, while the latter mode is commonly used to do most of the work automating miniaturization crafting.
There's also steve's/super factory manager block gates, which literally expose a block as an inventory. This is similar to how the formation plane is like a storage bus that places/drops items, except the block gate can also break or pick up blocks/items. And since an actual storage bus or other filtered io can be connected to it, this is very useful.

Hey nice network. You can enchant the annihilation with fortune and use it with silk touch ore
