- Matilda Reaction is today's video! Hey everyone! Join me as I watch Matilda for the first time today!
This film adaptation of a Roald Dahl work tells the story of Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson), a gifted girl forced to put up with a crude, distant father (Danny DeVito) and mother (Rhea Perlman). Worse, Agatha Trunchbull (Pam Ferris), the evil principal at Matilda's school, is a terrifyingly strict bully. However, when Matilda realizes she has the power of telekinesis, she begins to defend her friends from Trunchbull's wrath and fight back against her unkind parents.

"You chose books, I chose looks"
Let's be honest, Miss Honey ended up with both.
In the book, Matilda makes up a limerick about Miss Honey and how she has a lovely face. She's reluctant to admit it at first because the rhyme uses Miss Honey's first name.
And Mrs. wormwood got neither
@@strawberrysoulforever8336I don’t blame her for being reluctant, I would be too for the overall compliment
Yup
28:26
Cody: “I really wish that Miss Honey could actually adopt Matilda. That would be like the perfect ending to this movie.”
Me:👀
😂
44:41 "I kinda hate that I predicted the-" *distracted by dog*
44:55 "I'm kind of mad that I predicted that ending there." "Like I'm glad that it ended the way I wanted it to." :)
There’s a very touching story that revolves around this movie. Mara Wilson, the actress that played Matilda, was filming this while her mother was dying of cancer. When the movie was finished but hadn’t been released yet, they found out her mom likely wouldn’t make it to the release. So Danny Devito arranged for her to see the movie in the hospital. She got to see her daughters movie before she passed on.
Another story is that, for a time, Danny and his wife had Mara stay at their house while her mother underwent the worst of her treatments. Everyone took good care of her during filming.
Fun(ish) fact:
Matilda's actress was going through a rough time bc her mom was diagnosed with cancer.
Danny DeVito really took care of her, and even made sure to get a tape of the movie ahead of schedule so her mom could see it before she died
Aww, that's so sweet. It's nice to see that Danny was comforting Mara when she was going through a tough time 'cause even though he was playing as Mr. Wormwood, it's nice to hear he's not like that in real life.
Yeah he and his wife all but adopted her. Danny is really a great guy
Frank looked out for her just like he did Froggy.
You saved me heaps of time writing this, thank you
"why are all these women married" is one of the funiest jokes in this movie lol
It first appeared in the book and was repeated verbatim.
Broooo, I was just about to comment this😂
Mine is when trunchbull says grow up quicker like she thinks kids can control how fast they grow up lol
@@ChrissaTodd True
Incels in a nutshell….
My mother got to meet the actress who played Miss Trunchbull. She apparently kept apologising over and over to the kids after each take, in case she scared them. She was super sweet!
Mara Wilson was acting in this film whilst her mum was dying of cancer. Love the foreshadowing you noticed Cody about adoption well done Cody
Danny devito let her mom see the movie beforehand before she passed away.
And Danny took amazing care of her during filming
@@ajandrianjafymusic it's also been revealed to me that it was Miss trunchball, that killed her mother and father
Yes and Danny and Maria let her stay with them
As some of y’all already know, On March 10, 1995, Mara Wilson’s mother, Suzie Wilson, was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer during filming. Mara revealed that Danny DeVito and his wife Rhea (Who played Matilda’s parents in the movie) would often look after her when her mother was in the hospital. Sadly Suzie later died on April 26, 1996, four months before the film’s theatrical release. Danny revealed that prior to her death, he had shown her the final edit of the movie so that she was able to see Mara’s performance in the movie.
The finished film was dedicated to her memory.
Also at 2:57 the song Send Me on my Way came out in 1994.
Miss honey is the most perfect movie character ever made. She's the teacher every kid probably wanted in their life. A little detail it's not big but it's good. Is that the fact every kid in class was able to answer her questions without problems means that She's a really great teacher
Yeah I mean like when I was at school I only liked the teachers that were either just generally nice people or the ones that didn't teach you anything
One of my favorite movies!! Haven’t finished the reaction yet but loving it so far!!
This movie is such a nostalgia trip for me. Mara Wilson was such a talented actress, (and still is) And upon watching it again, I've realized just how horrifying Ms. Trunchbull is.
BRO WHY ARE YOU EVERYWHERE
@@GMDTurbo I know! I knew I’ve seen this guy in recent comment sections! I just came back from checking…
Ms. Trunchbull: “It was the most scrumptious cake in the WORLD!”
Bruce: “Nah, my mum’s is better!”
I don’t know why, but this is one of my favourite moments in this entire movie.. 😂
It was also a very well-written roast! Nothing compares to Mom's chocolate cake! 😁
Well play Bruce, mine mom’s cake is also better than her 😂😂😂
Them hiding in the house from the principal was intense and wild. Love that they know when to add the horror and suspense.
12:44 - 13:34
Something to note is Hortensia's backstory cut out from the movie. In the book, the girl has some huge nerve, but is also a survivor. She was sent six times to The Chokey, in her FIRST TERM. Twice for a whole day and the other times for two hours each.
The first time was because she decided to play a prank on the Trunchbull (I mean, who wouldn't. I would want to put some dirt on that headmistress). She poured syrup on to the seat of the chair the Trunchbull was going to sit on at prayers. As Hortensia described it best:
"When she lowered herself into the chair, there was a loud squelching noise, and it was beautiful. And when she jumped up again, the chair sort of stuck to the seat of those awful green breeches she wears and came up with her for a few seconds until the thick syrup slowly came unstuck. Then she clasped her hands to the seat of her breeches and both hands got covered in the muck. You should have heard her bellow."
But some kid snuck on Hortensia, saw what she did, and ratted her out (She knocked his teeth out later on.), and the Trunchbull sent her to the Chokey for a whole day.
The second time she played another prank where she snuck into the Trunchbull's room, while she was out teaching a class. Hortensia searched through her drawers where she kept all her gym underwear, and poured a load of inching-powder, called The Skin Scorcher, on every pair the Trunchbull had. And so when the Trunchbull wore them for gym at school, she started scratching like crazy, only for the scratching to get even worse:
"She must have thought she had a wasp nest down there. And then, right in the middle of the Lord's Prayer, she leapt up and grabbed her bottom and rushed out of the room."
Hortensia felt she wouldn't be caught, but even then, the Trunchbull gave her a day in the Chokey anyway. Mainly because of the Trunchbull's "nasty habit of guessing". Hortensia was mainly accused because of the syrup prank, despite no proof. And her trip to the Chokey was even worst than before since she suffered so many cuts from the broken glass and nails.
Being at that school is basically war, when you think about it.
Mara Wilson (Matilda) got really shy when she had to dance in front of everybody at the scene where she mastered her powers, so everyone danced with her behind the cameras to make her feel safe ❤
Talk about support. Especially considering what Mara was going through.
This was one of the movies that I would watch religiously as a child. Also, the musical movie is really well done and is a good movie on its own; I think you will really enjoy it. Also, Miss Trunchbull is one of the best villains in literature.
Fun Fact: The actress who plays Mrs. Phelps the librarian is the late Jean Speegle Howard, whose son is actor and director Ron Howard.
42:15 this has got to be the most satisfying moment for me to see miss trunchbull afraid of the big kids. They’ve had to endure her for the longest and now they finally get to have their revenge 😁👏🏼
One of my favorite 90s classics. 90's heart, cartoony villains, rebellious kids, some gross out humor.... This movie is insane and I love it! Glad you enjoyed it! Even as a kid I thought the principal was hilariously threatening. The "tally ho" scene still makes me laugh.
Another big difference from the book: at the end of the book, Matilda actually does lose her abilities.
As it turned out, she was only able to do so because she wasn't being academically challenged in Miss Honeys class, so her brain had to make up for it somehow.
But that all stopped once she was transferred to a higher, more appropriate grade, because now for the first time in her life, she's being actively challenged, instead of having her smarts go to waste.
Miss Honeys house is very different from the book. The main difference being that there is literally nothing in there besides a small camping stove, and two wooden boxes.
Matilda didn't decide to help her just to get justice for Miss Honeys father. She also did it because Miss Honey needed serious help.
The fact that while filming this, Mara Wilson's mother was diagnosed with cancer and then during post production, she passed, and Danny Devito had actually shown Mara's mother the movie even though it wasn't fully complete... plus he and his then wife, Rhea Perlman, offered to watch Mara while her parents went to doctors appointments and stuff... shows the kind of man Danny Devito really is
Fun fact, the actress who plays Miss Trunchbull was also Aunt Marge, whom Harry Potter "blew up" in Prisoner of Azkaban.
Fun fact: The cake eating scene with Bruce, he actually didn't swallow the chocolate cake. They had him spit it out on a napkin, but the producers didn't wipe his face after every bite. 😋
by the way, this movie is the cutest movie ever. such a great feel-good movie 😊
I also read that filming it took so long that they put an infinity symbol instead of the start and finish time for the scene. Mara was trying to rest😂
34:25 behind the scenes fun fact: Mara told Danny she felt self conscious to dance with the crew watching her, so Danny told the crew to join in with the dancing ❤️😊
I like that smile blushing emoji on your comment
I loved this movie growing up and when looking back on it, I never realized just how many dark moments it had until rewatching it a couple of months ago 😂
Mara Wilson was actually really nervous about dancing on the table, so Danny Devito got the whole cast to dance behind the camera with her.
Little fun fact Mara was too scared to dance alone, so Danny made sure just for her everyone in the studio danced with her ❤️
There's a real beautiful story about Mara and Danny behind this. I cried for her when I read about it.
Yeah, Mara Wilson's mother was suffering from cancer and she passed away during the middle of production. Whilst Mara was grieving, her fellow actors around her helped her complete the movie in her late mother's honor.
Also her mom got to see it before she passed away.
Danny showed it to her before it came out.
This movie was always so special to me. It's nostalgic, it's well played out, it's got a great story, and all the actors played their parts extremely well and they all had good chemistry! It's everything I could want in a movie! What's also so incredibly bittersweet is that Danny DeVito was so nurturing towards Mara Wilson (Matilda) that he acted as a sort of father figure while her mother was sick and even arranged to have her mother be able to get a special viewing of the movie before she unfortunately passed away before the movie was fully released. He did it all in this movie. He starred in it, he narrated it, he directed it, he produced it and he cared for Mara! I just love this movie so much and I'm so glad it's getting the recognition it deserves! So glad you reacted to it!
That's an unfortunate typo. I know you meant nurturing. Neutering is something completely different.
@@WinterLynne94 Whoops my bad! I fixed it. Thanks!
Matilda is a incredible and smart kid. And deserves much better parents than her real biological parents.
Sad fact about this film:
Durning filming, Mara Wilson's (Matilda) mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and unfortunately passed away 4 months before the films release. Danny Devito, who was the films director had shown Mara's mother the final cut of the movie to show her daughters performance. Danny and his at the time wife Rhea Pearlman (Matilda's mother) had both been looking after Mara durning filming and after. Making sure she had fun and enjoyed filming.
Oh, it's sad
Danny adopted Mara after everything
@@marcyrei7080 for real ?

YESSSSS! This is one of my favourite movies ever I’m so happy you watched this! Pam Ferris nailed the role of miss trunchbul
21:57 that made me laugh, so hard, Cody I’ve never seen you laugh that hard before your laugh was contagious
Danny went beyond Saint for Mara while making this. During the kitchen scene, Mara was really nervous about getting on that table and dancing. So Danny had the entire cast and crew dance along with her behind the camera. And when it was confirmed Mara's mother wasn't going to make it in time for the film to be fully produced, Danny had them put everything they had together and play it at the hospital so she could see her little girl in action. The world needs at least a couple million more people like Danny Devito in it and that's the truth.
This is one of my favourite childhood movies growing up I love everything about it to the fact that not only did Danny Devito star in it but he also narrated and directed the movie which to me is so good. I also love how they made Trunchball so intense and so scary and the actress really delivered her role. I love Matilda and Miss Honeys relationship, I love that they found there happiness and become a loving family at the end ❤️❤️❤️ this movie has a lot of heartwarming and funny and dark scenes but overall it is an iconic movie and I’m glad you enjoyed it Cody can’t wait for the next movie reaction 😊😄😉😉👍👍👍 fun fact: Rhea pearlman the one playing Danny’s wife here is actually his real life wife 😊
The kid didn't eat all of it, but he still did have to eat a lot of it. In fact after they finally finished, he got sick to his stomach. I think what they basically did was have 4 to 5 different cakes, each with more cake missing, to make it look like he'd been eating it.
21:58 🤣 this moments was pure gold
2:54 - I thought this song came out in the early 2000s?
Me - The song "Send Me On My Way" was written in 1992 by "Rusted Root".
34:14 - I remember the scene where she's using her powers to make cereal (starting when she picks up the milk, ending when she's holding the spoon and smiling) being a Cheerios commercial for Cheerios and Matilda.
This movie will forever be iconic ❤
This film truly is an ode to the talent of pam ferris (miss trunchbulls actor) as she's played so many iconic characters like miss trunchbull, aunt marge in HP and one of the sisters in Call the midwife- talk about diversity of roles 😄
So good in Rosemary and Thyme. She is not an ugly lady
The fact that Matilda still makes an effort to protect her dad and entire family overall from the cops is amazing to me, even though they’re nothing but cruel to her she still protects them. They don’t even know she does it either which only makes it more heroic.
I'm really glad Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman are nothing like that in real life. In fact Mara Wilson's mother died during filming and they were there to comfort here (I think even Pam Ferris), and yes, they're all three parents as well.
Danny devito got an early copy of the movie for mara Wilson's mom who was dying so she could see it before she passed.
At the scene of “Magnus” writing on the board when Matilda writes “I will get you like you got me.” Trunchbull holds her neck scared indicating that she strangled Magnus to death.
I got that, but I wonder what motivated Trunchbull to kill him. We need a prequel on Trunchbull to understand her character on a deeper level. Was Trunchbull abused as a child, did she have a envy of her sister, Miss Honey's mother, and fell in love with Muss Honey's dad but he wasn't interested in her so she killed him out of revenge. So many possibilities.
the actress who plays Miss Trunchball (Pam Ferris) also played aunt Marge in harry potter and the prisoner of azakban (the woman that got blown up as a balloon by harry!)
But this is a childhood favorites of mine (I was born in 1995) but I have seen it a few times. But I have been looking forward to your reaction for months of this and it was worth the wait and it cheered me up since I've been sick all weekend, so thank you Cody and happy Monday!
Rotten headmaster, rotten aunt... I'd like to think she finally retired but never really changed her personality
@@stephanniemorin 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 but so true!
Thank you for watching this movie! I haven’t seen the musical one either, so this movie is kinda my childhood. I loved this film and it got me into reading and writing when I was a kid. Thank you again for watching this.
Danny Devito took the girl in while her mother was dying, he even managed to get a tape of the movie to her mother so she could see her daughter act before she died. What a gem of a human being he is.
I loved this movie with all my heart... and I still do
Watched this movie so many times as a kid, and it was fun to watch it again with you. "Moby WHAT?" is one of my favorite jokes.
What a classic movie, this brings back a lot of memories.
21:58 Flawless reaction! Amazing! You were not expecting that to happen
Oh yeah, this movie is a classic. I seem drawn to it every time I see it air on tv.🙂
This movie is underrated but I have it on VHS and DVD
Matilda was a childhood classic of mine.
Oh wow I wasnt expecting a Matilda reaction! Only because I haven't seen to many first time reactions to it is all, either way there's a lot of sweet stuff about this movie in general it has so much soul to it as well
One of my childhood favorites !
Thanks for reacting to it 💙💙
The mother was Danny devito real life wife, rhea pearlman.
I'm so shocked you've never seen this film! It's such a classic x
12:22 i heard somewhere that the kids in the background were showing real fear when trunchbull walked towards them
I remember i first watched it in school in 7th grade, Ms. Trunchball gave me nightmares istg
The scene in her house is horrorish
But i love it 😍 the bway musical is also one of my favorites, the songs there make me cry
Reminder before you watch the musical: this movie is based on the book
The movie musical is based on the Broadway musical.
I'm glad that Bruce was okay after the cake thing. After that, I wouldn't be okay for the next couple of days.
This one is a big favorite of mine. I loved Matilda and related to her love of books, wanted magical powers of my own/pretended and the Trunchbull terrified the crap out of me.
5:30 Love the Harry Potter reference, it is so fitting! Also, if you didn't know, the actress playing the Trunchbull (Pam Ferris) also played Aunt Marge from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban!!
28:33 Cody: I really wish that miss Honey could actually adopt Matilda. That would be like the perfect ending to this movie. Me: Well it looks like you got your wish.
How fitting that the actress that played Miss Trunchbull played Marge Dursley in Prisoner of Azkaban🤣
The person who played Matilda also played Lily in Thomas and the magic railroad!
I’m so glad you reacted to one of my favorite movies of all time. It made my day! I actually got to meet Mara Wilson (Matilda) at a con a while ago, and she was so down to earth. ❤️

I have a theory that this sequence of escaping Trunchbull’s house may have inspired the game Hello Neighbor!
💡
In the book, Matilda lost her powers in the end because she's in a class for advanced kids and has to concentrate more.
Miss Honey's poverty is worse in the book because if I remember well, she doesn't even have a table and chairs.
Fun fact : the man in the painting is in fact Roald Dalh, the author of the book
This movie is great, I remember watching this movie when I was a kid, I also read the book that it was based on. Fun fact though Danny Devito directed this movie.
Pam Ferris (Miss Trunchbull) would actually remain in-character around the child actors so that their fear of her would be genuine. That's dedication to the craft, though kinda sad when you think about it.
I love this movie and happy you reacted to it
This is my favorite movie because like Matilda, I find comfort in books too😊Also, this film has some similarities to Carrie, where a girl who’s bullied also gets telekinetic powers. But, unlike that movie where people died, this is more family friendly in some ways😊
Also Carrie is a teenager who's abused constantly no matter where she is. The reason she was even at prom was because one of her classmates felt guilty and wanted her boyfriend to ask Carrie to make up for it. Roald Dahl may have been inspired since the book came out in the late 80s and Carrie came out in 1974, with three movie adaptations and a musical (I love the villain song The World According to Chris, about the bully and why she thinks it's unfair to punish her for bullying Carrie and other kids). The gym teacher in Carrie, though, does try to help her.
There's a magnet inside the chalk, and someone is using a magnet to write the words backwards. With the words already written backwards on the other side.
18:23 it actually IS true! She said “a girl does not get anywhere by ACTING intelligent”. If you are intelligent then you will but if you act like you are just for the credit only on a shallow level then you will flop
First off: at the time they filmed this, they actually were husband and wife.
So what they did for the hat scene was put on a harness under the suit he's wearing, that connects to the hat, so when she tries to pull it off, he's holding it on with his whole body. So when you see her cutting the hat off in the next scene, she's actually cutting the wires from the harness off of the hat.
The shot of the mom backflipping off the table wasn't her, it was a stunt double.
And as for the cream tarts, what they did was set up miniature catapult seesaws, put a tart on one end on them, and essentially send them flying.
Dude, your reaction 22:00 and laughter afterwards had me laughing my ass off😂.
If you are also going to watch the musical you have to know that they are very different. This movie is based on a british book. The musical movie is based on a play that's also based on the book.
Good point. Why has no one read the books? This movie and the musical didn't take much if any inspiration from each other. The only thing I can think of is that the kids were more downtrodden in the movie and musical and fought harder in the book.
21:58 the best bit in the movie
The song that was played during 2:56 is named Send Me on My Away by Rusted Root which was released in 1992 just 4 years before the film was released.
One of my favorite childhood movies and I'd say one of the best Roald Dhal adaptations and I bet he would've loved it if he was still alive.
14:14 - 14:37 I love this reaction in this scene of movie 😂😂😂😂😂
21:58 - 22:41 I realy love this reaction in this scene of movie 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

I hope you’ll watch the new one too! It’s closer to the original novel
Did you know that the boy with the glasses who catches the newt at 26:19 is Craig Lamar Traylor who played Stevie Kenarban from Malcolm In The Middle?
Danny Devito also directed this movie.
I love Danny DeVito is a great actor he also voiced the Lorax and I highly recommend it
Great reaction 😄 Your reaction to Bruce and the cake, along with pretty much every Trunchbull scene, was hilarious to watch!
Seeing as you liked this, you should try the musical! It’s amazing and considerably darker than this version
The actress of Miss Trunchbull Pam Ferris is the same actress who played uncle Vernons sister Magdalena Dursley which Harry Potter magically inflated to a helium Ballon and let fly away in to the sky at the beginning of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Bro, that's one of my favorite movies of all time but you know Pam Ferris who plays Miss trunchball also plays Marge dursley from Harry Potter the third movie and Danny DeVito's my favorite too
I have never rushed to see a RUclips video notification so fast, that’s how much I love this movie. I recently got it for my birthday, before then and I totally enjoy it.
