Wait until it makes you miss things you've had and places you've been. ....(edit) Just re-discovered this song (2 years after my initial comment). Roughly 2 years ago I collided head on with a drain tile at 70mph, I was so drunk I still to this day dont remember even getting in the car, I just woke up in the hospital the next day with broken ribs and a collar bone. It was really the ending of a certain chapter in my life. Just got my license back today (end of probation), been sober for a while now. Its a better experience tbh
My cousin Homer loved this song, oh do I pray you found the happiness in the afterlife that you were looking for ever so endlessly while you were here, I love you bubba ❤️❤️💪🏼
I remember exactly where I was when I first heard this. The corner of Kolb and Speedway in Tucson, AZ. It came on the radio and after hearing the first lyric I pulled over to give it my full attention. It just stunned me. I’ve never experienced that in another song, ever. He is an incredible talent. An incomparable voice and lyrics that resonate.
Ray does that to you. I remember the first time I heard him sing. let it be me. I was on a back road in West Virginia with an Ex I'd love to never see again. But Ray got me through it.
A past girlfriend introduced me to Ray LaMontagne's music... she was an incredible person. Everytime I hear Ray, I think of her... I miss her sooo much. Connection to this song becomes electrified for me.
This song... it is not just a song its yearning... its lonelyness fought back with hope ...its love laid waste by times unfeeling hand..its hope of the sun while trapped in ice over the miles, the years, the moments .All the lingering shatterd hearts of those who've loved lost and remained merely here alive yes ,but never truly . No matter the heights a heart may climb to in effert to heal,Or to distract the soul wich cannot let GO of the one fore wich it breathes.unable to stop wandering driven to escape a pain theirs no medicine to permanetly relieve or eleveate . Temperary distraction , always a brief release coming and gone with the morning and such cost is paid gladly even sometimes in tears. So it goes stone human's.
You should definitely start writing if you're not one already. Only the ones who truly suffered the loss of deep emotional love can grasp exactly what you're saying. Well said 👏
For me heard this summer 2016 just kicking it and living life as 26yo single guy working and drinking… and European women.. until I met this wild girl “the one”…that really changed me forever… and on my part foolishly & naively reconnected years later for her only to use me as a stepping stone to something better.. Left hurt and confused… I accepted it..Knowing I’ll never see her again and That she’s a mum now married, whatever, … I can come to terms with because I love her and this song for the way she affected my life and how much joy she and this song brought to me at a specific time in my life.
this song makes me weep! I used to hold my woman to this album on repeat. Intimacy shared through music needs no words as it is felt in the bloodstream.
Loved this song for years… always felt emotionally connected to it in some strange untold way. Years later, I find myself in the most unexpected, heartbreaking love story.. and find this song once again. And now I understand why.
Same with me. I was in Spokane, Washington when I was wrestling some dark matter and this songs just haunts me like a dark messenger....... tears every single time I hear it. The song "Vancouver" by Reckless Kelly.....same thing. Music is such a powerful thing!
Lyrics: Cocaine flame in my bloodstream Sold my coat when I hit Spokane Bought myself a hard pack of cigarettes in the early morning rain Lately my hands they don't feel like mine My eyes been stung with dust, I'm blind Held you in my arms one time Lost you just the same Jolene I ain't about to go straight It's too late I found myself face down in the ditch Booze in my hair Blood on my lips A picture of you, holding a picture of me In the pocket of my blue jeans Still don't know what love means Still don't know what love means Jolene Ah, La, La, La, La, La Jolene Been so long since I seen your face Or felt a part of this human race I've been living out of this here suitcase for way too long A man needs something he can hold onto A nine pound hammer or a woman like you Either one of them things will do Jolene I ain't about to go straight It's too late I found myself face down in the ditch Booze in my hair Blood on my lips A picture of you, holding a picture of me In the pocket of my blue jeans Still don't know what love means Still don't know what love means Jolene La, La, La, La, La, La, La Jolene La, La, La, La, La, La, La Jolene
Hey Ray, my dad was a carpenter for 40 years,I used to watch him work hard, he’s dead and gone now,we didn’t have much time n commitment n but I played shelter and he broke down and cried
This is fine poetry and a melody that matches every word. This takes you with it and into it, and you believe in the story told, and more. You feel it.
I play songs around a campfire…Hank… Willy,, Kristofferson, Beck, the violent phemms!…but nothing moves them like when I dig out a Ray Song….everyone stops talking and starts listening….game loves game.
This song what can i say that hasnt been said here already. I guess alot of young men felt like this trying to find their way and couldnt find the words to say it. It rings true for many
This is the top heart breaker of this album, great writing Ray! So glad I got this on wax... songs are classic singer songwriter works. Thanks buddy :)
So funny and crazy. I absolutely adore him. Lived 30 minutes away. Turner maine? Who would've thought? 20 years later, my boyfriend insulates his house. Didnt know who he was. I freaked out. Love him so.❤

From a movie stand point, another song chosen ate the end that lets you know who you want to be, if given a chance. Great movie one of my favorite, how sometimes we get sucked in to things based on survival, outstanding movie nailed it.

Makes me think of my sisters ex. He’s addicted to drugs and his two daughters hardly see him anymore. My sisters 8 year old has disowned him after he broke another promise and didn’t come to her 8th birthday party. Not to mention how dumb he is now because of drugs. It’s quite sad how drugs ruin people, he’s currently clean and living with his sister but I don’t know how long it will last this time… he always relapses. 😔
I know she'll be gone before me. I hold onto every moment before that happens. I weep at work sometimes, behind stacks of copiers in the far side of a warehouse. I know what picking a future with her means. It means I'll probably have to bury her, it's probably too late to have a child with her, but I love her. As long as I can keep with her until one of us has to leave, I don't really want anything else.
This song makes me miss things I've never had, and places I've never been.
God damnit this song makes me cry.

At the end of Ben Affleck's the Town movie, this song just sums up love as an emotion. One of my favorites
For real that's where I heard it and I just looked it up
I just finished watching that movie and waited for the credits to roll then googled the song love it from Australia

Love is a choice not a convoluted theory

Powerful song to this day 🔥
This song just hits those of us who have lived on that side of the line harder
You've got that right! This song is so simple, yet so powerful.
"Vancouver" by Reckless Kelly and "Winter" by Jushua Radin affect me in a similar way.
true that.
I really do'nt think that this man's music and voice will ever stop affecting people, thank you Ray.

First like first comment, I feel important now
I so need to reset my life
[Verse 1]
Cocaine flame in my bloodstream
Sold my coat when I hit Spokane
Bought myself a hard pack of cigarettes in the early morning rain
Lately my hands they don't feel like mine
My eyes been stung with dust, I'm blind
Held you in my arms one time
Lost you just the same
[Pre-Chorus]
Jolene
I ain't about to go straight
It's too late
[Chorus]
I found myself face down in the ditch
Booze in my hair
Blood on my lips
A picture of you, holding a picture of me
In the pocket of my blue jeans
Still don't know what love means
Still don't know what love means
Jolene
Ah, La, La, La, La, La
Jolene
[Verse 2]
Been so long since I seen your face
Or felt a part of this human race
I've been living out of this here suitcase for way too long
A man needs something he can hold onto
A nine pound hammer or a woman like you
Either one of them things will do
[Pre-Chorus]
Jolene
I ain't about to go straight
It's too late
[Chorus]
I found myself face down in the ditch
Booze in my hair
Blood on my lips
A picture of you, holding a picture of me
In the pocket of my blue jeans
Still don't know what love means
Still don't know what love means
