Political parties nominate their own candidates, who are then heavily promoted by the media they control. To ease corruption, the political class in Romania is disproportionately large: consider the comparison: Romania has a population of 19,054,550 (Q1 2024) and a bicameral Parliament consisting of 330 Deputies and 136 Senators. In contrast, the United States, with a population of 341,963,408, has 435 Representatives and 100 Senators. Georgescu emerged as an anomaly in this corrupt political system. An independent candidate but well-known by many Romanians, he was intentionally excluded from all mainstream media presidential debates. Yet, he won by leveraging the increasingly relevant platform - the Internet, via social media, podcasts etc - much like former U.S. President Donald Trump did. People listened to him, did their own research, and voted overwhelmingly for him. The corrupt political class is now in a panic, deploying the same tactics once used against Trump. Claims that Georgescu is "sold to the Russians" (false) or a "fascist sympathizer" (also false) have flooded the discourse. Unfortunately, Romania’s political and judicial systems remain deeply influenced by Stalinist principles. This is evidenced by practices like manipulating election outcomes in Josef Stalin's way: "it doesn’t matter how people vote as long as we count the votes", or operating Beria’s infamous order, "Show me the man, and I will show you the crime." You will see lots of arrests and show trials in the months to come. The current political elite prioritizes war and globalization, but this vision is not shared by the Romanian people. Unfortunately, Romania’s political and judicial systems still follow Stalinist principles, manipulating votes and using accusations to target opponents. While the political class pushes for war and globalization, Georgescu’s rise reflects the people’s growing rejection of these priorities and their demand for real change.
