Posted from below regarding 3D stereoscopic vision problems that these types of displays lead to. If viewing 3D on good video equipment strains your eyes then that most often means you have a problem with your stereoscopic vision usually caused by one eye being weaker than the other. When the defect that damages depth perception is noticed when you are young treatment can be as simple as wearing an eye patch over the stronger eye. However because of the eye's link to the brain it is often more difficult for adults to correct the problem as thought processes that have created deep habits of thinking out of symmetry with the brain's structure must also be corrected.
Some eye doctors indorse 3D TV to expose stereoscopic vision problems in children so early corrections can be made. Based on my experience using active shutter 3D glasses places your eyes into symmetrical stereoscopic balance improving 3D perception, and in the case of someone with a sight imbalance this will be forcing the eyes and brain to function properly and can be uncomfortable for the viewer where the more out of balance the worse it is. If your eyes are bothered by 3D viewing *you should see an eye doctor and have your eyes checked and corrected as not only will you be able to enjoy 3D TV, but far more importantly you will have increased 3D perception in everyday life so forget about TV as this problem is real taking away your depth perception needed to have fun and avoid injury.* When growing up I was often surprised by some peoples inability to do simple things like hit a baseball and now realize it was likely vision problems causing it. Few people have perfect vision and many of the issues can be corrected where 3D depth perception is often the easiest and least expensive vision problem to correct when treated at a young age.
I can assure you for people with no vision problems 3D TV blows away 2D TV (why high-end 2D comb filters are referred to as "3D" ) and there is simply no comparison to flat 2D viewing especially for sports like FPV RC aircraft flying. The more "strain" your eyes experience watching 3D TV is an indication of how far out of balance your stereoscopic vision is.
