His skill and teachings have inspired me to make a knife. No where near the master yet😄😄. One day hopefully I'll own one of them with the chilli peppers on them. Greetings from South Africa.
I owe this man a lot of credit. All the way to the USA, you have inspired me since I was young. I messaged you on Facebook when I was a young boy and showed you a knife and asked what you thought. It was the coolest time of my very early teenage years, maybe before then. I now have my own knife making business and I am so thankful for your videos!!
That's great, thank you. All your knife videos (movies) are some of the most inspiring as far as getting me excited to get back out in the shop and make knives. I've spent 20 hours hand sanding before with a much less perfect result, which you doing that in 1 hour shows what you can do with right technique.
This has changed my outlook on sanding as well! Just started using stones and it has been great . I agree it is calming now and I don't mind as much. THANK YOU FOR SHARING!! Be well.
I just got a small set of stones to give them a try 120 to 600. For me , the is awesome. You have to try these finishing stones if you are using sandpaper they are a great addition. Been making knives for close to 2 years and I am still learning, thank you to all you guys posting.
I've used those little stones for a while now, if you have a good variety of stones that have different hardnesses (there are harder and softer stone materials, some work better than others in different steels) and grades, you can do a lot more work than most people would think. Using the stone the way he is is the correct way to use it, the downward angle allows for maximum surface pressure on the stone, and the backstroke clears the cut. I would prefer a stone cut knife over a belt or wheel ground one any day. It involves more effort but it results in a much finer quality blade. These types of stones have been used by tool and die makers this way for centuries, you can make some amazing things with them.
Yes, these are classic moldmaking stones. One of the best in the world if we talk about abrasives (check also other things like sandpapers, polishing compounds, etc. specific for tool/mold industry).
Greetings from Aotearoa, New Zealand, that was a great video, I am going to try and get some of those stones, they are great. My knifemaking journey only began two years ago (I am 72) my teacher said you learn to rush at it slowly! Its all good, only wish I'd started twenty years ago, I love your videos, some of my youtube favorites

thank you for this video, i have watched a number of yours. i have been aware that machinist , gunsmith, etc. use stores in their work and have wondered for some time about using them on blades. your is the only video that shows using stones. so i decided to try it, worked great. ended up buying an inexpensive set of ten different grits. its takes me less than 1/2 the tin and the finish is much better. also. my plunge line is better . thanks again...
Well, after watching your video, I went to amazon and bought some grinding sticks. I used them for the first time yesterday. The initial process of going from belt grinder to the first grit of hand sanding is usually what takes the longest. With the grinding stick, it took less than half the time and even less effort to sand out the grind lines. Thanks for sharing this great piece of wisdom!!!

Your English is funny, but much better than my Polish :) very useful video, one can see that you know what you are talking about. I like your work. Keep it up!
Thats great. I never considered using stones instead of sand paper. I knew they existed, I've just never actually seen them used properly. I guess the question would be how long they last, and how refined does your surface need to be before you can start in with the stones. Well I'll find out because I'm definitely going to try going that way. Thanks for introducing me to them.
Your videos are truly amazing. I have been a long time subscriber ! And because of you I even attempted to make myself a knife wich turned out great, and very sharp... thanks a lot for the tips in the video
Beautiful as always. You always make such great videos! I have heard that the "mud" actually helps speed up the process. It's like little pieces of sand like sand paper.
It's called a "slurry". Yes, it helps the process. Some stones cut properly only when you make some slurry (without it they scratch the surface, especially brand new stones). You should not clean it too often, keep the slurry fluid (add some liquid). But be careful not to "load"/glaze the stone.
Great work , sharing you knowledge, te stones sound great. Could you please make a movie on the steel that you start with and how you work out if it is heat treatable and your beat treating methods, for example the small cleaver you made from a saw blade. What temp did you heat treat it at and what grade of steel was it. I want to repurpose old steel. How did they know the type and grade of steel used 100yrs ago for knife making, can you help me out please.
"It depends" what you are doing, what material (type/grade, hardness, geometry), what the goal is, what grade of stone and few other factors. Starting with fresh, brand new stone can cause problems like scratching the surface (very first strokes - so initial forming/dressing may help), then you must care not to clog/glaze the stone with improper lubrication.
Yes. I have now used stones on a skinning knife and a 22” blade. They did an excellent job. WD-40 as lubricant. The stones dressed themselves nicely. Very good outcome!
I went to the Gesswein site and found many types of stones. (general polishing, premium white, oil treated, white polishing, ultra soft...) Could you respond with which type of stone you recommend?
Trollsky, try sanding your bevels on the grinder to a higher grit with cork belts or trizacts. I start using these stones at 600 grit, no need for the rougher ones!
