Thanks Meghan! Good points about cheaper flights not always being cheaper. And changing airports is such a hassle if you have checked baggage especially.

Great Insights !! Also, IF time is your friend. You can leverage your layovers by days or even weeks. Say you fly from Canada to Bali. Layovers in the Philippines, Tokyo, and Jakarta are comon. You can often 'bump' your connecting flights by the next day or following week(s). The airlines run the same flight numbers in regular schedules monthly. With several stops and some planning, you may visit 3 countries over a few weeks on ONE PAID RT TICKET and repeat the process on the return for even MORE places.

Please explain how the "bump" is made. Thanks.

My tip. Buy direct with an airline instead of booking sites. If someone needs to be bumped, it will most likely be me bc I used Expedia

@iraqidolphin Expedia is a good booking websites but try to compare the flight prices thru bookingbuddy mostly the cheapoair is the cheapest price. Booked my Toronto-Sandiego for 478 C dollars. But last year before Covid thru Skyscanner I was able to find cheapest flight from Air Canada. You were right it's good to book directly to Airlines company we got Non-stop flight to San Diego again for 400 round trip Air Canada. Try to use the apps skyscanner and bookingbuddy to compare the prices before you booked flight.

Isn't it harder to cancel or change your flight without exorbitant fees on those sites?
I use Google flights to search and book directly with the airline.

There are a couple of other good reasons to book using an experienced 'bricks and mortar' traditional agent:
1/ if there are major issues causing huge disruptions and cancellations (volcano or covid for example).. it is usually MUCH easier to re book by phoning someone in an agent rather than an online site which may not be working due to overload or an uncontactable airline call centre with hours long waiting time.
2/ if you book direct with an airline ..which then goes bust you could be completely stuffed. An agent can work with you on other options.

For Tip #7 i've found that installing the airlines app helps a lot. They let me do online checking, keep me informed of any changes, and keep everything clean and handy. No missed notifications.

Some airports where I have had a long layover I have been able to jump on a bus or train into the city and do a bit of exploring. Obviously that wouldn't work if your layover is during the night but I tend to ignore those flights as the savings when you add a potential hotel etc makes it not worth it.

One additional point about extremely long layovers & relaxation is to not necessarily go to all the trouble of an off-site hotel/
shuttle but instead get a short-term lodging day-use room that offers the opposite of the normal nightly room!
Most big hub airports have them.

Tip #10, I used AmEx to book a domestic flight with AA. A day before the flight, an AmEx agent called me to tell me that my original connection flight was canceled. They helped me find another flight that had a longer layover. AA never informed me. On the returned flight, which was running an hour late, AA misdirected me to the wrong terminal and end up with a long layover, again. I will never fly with AA, again.

If you have the time using points to book long haul business class flights can be exceptionally good value. Case in point, I spent $2,800 CAD to buy 160,000 Aeroplan points, I then transferred 60,000 AmEx points over to Aeroplan and then proceeded to book Sydney, Australia to Zurich then Zurich to Toronto, then Los Angeles to Seoul and lastly Seoul to Sydney all in business class for 220,000 Aeroplan points + $200 in taxes and fees meaning all in I spent $3000 for the trip. A comparable cash fare would easily cost as much in coach!

This is all very well and good but as a person still waiting for his first flight abroad, in the event I will be asked by my girlfriend to book, I need to know how to get past the website stage let alone whether the airport is close to where I am staying. If I booked a holiday a week to Spain for 2 people I would book it as an overnight hotel stay in Paris for 0 people and 300 bags leaving Heathrow for JFK and returning to South Pole Station Airport 4 years later. That is the extent of my ability to use a travel booking website. If there is a video made of how to use a travel booking website I would love to see it.
