- Back in August of 2017, Patrick Matamoros sat down with HYPEBEAST Radio to talk about how he met Kanye West and the resurgence of old band merch. He also described what it was like collaborating with Jerry Lorenzo and Fear of God on a collection. Now, for our docu-series, the vintage T-shirt dealer takes us through one of his typical days.
When Matamoros first moved to New York City, he set up on the corner of Prince and Mercer streets, in the epicenter of Manhattan's SoHo district. He recalls nearly giving up after spending a whole day there not selling a single tee until a man purchased multiple pieces right as he began packing up. Fast forward and he's meeting with Chris Gibbs of Union and taking us on a house call with music producer Benny Blanco in Los Angeles. Take a look above at what it's like to be a full-time vintage tee dealer for the stars where "finding a shirt is like Fight Club" and stay tuned for our next installment soon. In case you missed it, our last video had Blondey McCoy talking about the pressures of being a pro skater, fashion icon and balancing his love for art and music.
"People think I go to thrift stores and resell online...but that's not what I do." Bruh we literally just watched you do that...
Rico Suave 💀💀
lol right
This nigga tripping!
He said spends a week or more fixing them a bit is what he meant
Chicago Area Racing lol what a dumbass 😂
*holds up the biggest t shirt I’ve ever seen* “this will fit Kanye perfectly”
He said because it would drape him perfectly. Kanye is known for wearing super oversized and baggy tees.
johnny walker yk da vibes
“I needed money so I decided to sell my shirts.”
3 minutes later
“I don’t respect the dealers who are in it to make money “😅
The dude owned shirts that were worth hundreds of dollars each. Clearly he had passion for these shirts themselves. Just needed to sell them
He wasn’t in it for the money, he loved vintage shirts and had them before he sold them. Now he combined his passion and made it into a career. I think he was referring moreso to people who only do it for the money
i was thinking the same thing.
Eduardo Lopez so why don’t he give them away for free. He does it for the money as well. People need to stop acting brand new.
It's not the same when you are broke and have to sell something you bought for yourself vs just buying shirts you would never wear just to flip them for cash3
This guy keeps contradicting himself.
He's a snake who takes advantage of celebs and their money.
Janoy Cresva don’t matter, it’s about the hustle
I’ve noticed that a lot of people in the thrift community are like that. They’ll say they don’t like when other people do something, but then they’ll tell a story where they did the exact same thing. 😂
Revenge maybe he’s saying those things from experience? No one is perfect but this dude here is on his f’ing grind regardless.
@@diegolopez19 Ohhh, what I said was meant with no disrespect. It's just an observation I've made from dealing with people in the vintage community. I'm sure I'm guilty of it myself at times.
This guy grinds effortlessly and passionately and that's what makes him a winner.
I met him in California on the Amtrak, he’s so passionate and always working hard it’s amazing, super nice guy and lucky I got to meet him!!
Ayanda Mothudi 100s of other niggas GRIND the same exact way. Thrifting and reselling but yeah i respect the grind too.
Umdringside not just an old t shirt homie
Live to win!
I want you to know that this is my favorite comment I’ve ever seen on RUclips and I think about this at least 1-2times a month. Truly a place we can all aspire to be in one day in our own form.
He looks like a gta supporting character
I've once saw him fight off a homeless man for a sleeveless tantop
Probably at Goodwill Outlet too. Where it's like $0.40 a shirt. Lol
OMG😱

Fuckingg hell hahahahahahaha
That's the grind💪🏿😤
Just imagine the amount of money this guy would make if he had an english accent.
underated comment
@NEARMUSICBEATS DRUMKITS & SAMPLES that's not what he meant.

What the fuck is an English accent?
@NEARMUSICBEATS DRUMKITS & SAMPLES No but London has a vintage market, I know, I lived there.

HAHA
Definitely. He is a true scumbag. No one in the vintage game respects him.
"this is deadstock I did all the bleach stains on it" oh so YOU ruined it? NICE!
That one hurt my soul.
He just ruined a really good t-shirt
Exactly, never ever do anything to a dead stock vintage item

"This stuff means too much to me"
Literally sitting on his t-shirts...
Nocy I was thinking the exact same thing lol
It's a shirt not a child they will be fine
Y’all really don’t know about the fact a shirt is in his bag w/other shirts. Like clothes mean different shit to ppl. It don’t matter if he sits on the bag of clothes or lays em on or whatever it’s an energy thing like lucky boxers for example y’all it’s a personal thing.
@dr FeelGood agree. fake shirts and a damaged soul
I applaud him. Being able to sell mediocre, or even worse, clothing and turning huge profit. Consumerism at it’s finest.
It’s not consumerism. That’s capitalism though. Also, rich people who don’t know what the hell to do with their money.
Yeah ppl dyed on some of those clothes
@@MiniM69 and people who barely have money starts doing this. It used to be _being broke by trying to look rich_ and now it's just _being broke by trying to look broke._ 💀
Anxiety 😂😂
People want to feel like they have something unique, even if its beat up, old shit and are willing to pay top cash for it. What can you do -other than selling them exactly that and having absurd profit margins-
“Everyway that’s possible to find vintage tshirts, I’m doing it” just runs up and rips it off some guys back
"There are dealers in it for money and dealers in it because they love it" doesn't make sense if this guy resells a $5 vintage shirt from Goodwill for as much as 100 times the price. Stop making this out to be some high end, deep idea and call it what it is - pretentious, greedy, and all about the money
knockout1290 You just described business, my friend.
knockout1290 A-Fucking-Men, this dude is a walking contradiction/oxymoron.
I dont think you'd sell a run down audi you got for 20k that you restored for the same price. After researching and knowing what it's worth you'd sell it for double or triple to what you bought it for
knockout1290 what if in terms of loving it, he curates special personal value collections and sells them for HIS price. Sorry but it sounds as if your interpretation of meaning is skewed from his, to the point of assuming he is a greedy man for having a higher price than what’s economically suitable for general populous? You sir are cancelled. Good Day‼️👍🏽
knockout1290 money makes the world go round my man, open ur eyes, being money hungry is not pretentious its a positive quality to have as money is the most important thing. Open your eyes, and do not respond saying “ooo money isnt important, happiness is the most important”. Thats a typical response, and money does bring happiness, people just don’t admit it because they are unhappy about not having a lot of money
dealing t shirts is better than dealing drugs. kudos.
Jon Spencer ✌
psst, u want some tees, i got some good tees over here
My name is Marc I've been doing t shirts for about 20 years now...
Fuck the t shirts I'll take the drugs
He will end up using drugs, after selling all those t-shirt & making money.
I lost all respect after I saw him convince dude the belly shirt was a good idea
THATS THE OPPOSITE HE DID. DID YOU LOOK AWAY ?
🤣🤣🤣
Customers fault for falling for it
Memelord 3 lucky he didn’t he called him out and made him feel like that simpleton he is

For the love of god man! Get a suitcase you can wheel around and pull upstairs

Not using a suitcase its fashion for him lol

Wimpy of him to drag that bag along the ground. That’s something a really little kid would do.
@@bigcooldaddy1965 well it's kind of the mentality he has.
“A week to a month working on a single tee” dude ass took a damaged shirt to the damn shop to get it fixed lmfao he’s really not doing anything.
lmao
A month is also not true.
You can make a whole new shirt within two or three days. I guess even faster when you do it for years
This man sells tshirts and drives an Audi. Wow thats TUFF
jiggy nigga no
He uses Uber...
it isn't tough, you do it then hah
lol that was a lyft driver who dropped him off
He’s out there. He is not just sitting on his ass selling shit. Most of it though, at least in the jackpot sense, seems to be networking into the proper channels that yield proper results. I bet if he had a passion to sell crazy straws he can use the same talent to find a market.
"Some people are in it for the money." Proceeds to make statement of a sweat shirt he sold for $17,000
danimal he said $1,700 you fool are you hard of hearing
He clearly stated 17 grand. If you start at 5:18 he states 17 grand for a sweat shirt, fool. You are hard of hearing and a shit troll at that.
If your'e not smart enough, then just to let you know that 17 grand is $17,000.
danimal ..J needs some math lessons, lol. The idiot judging when unable to understand the meaning of the word Grand
danimal if he was in for the money he probably would’ve never reached the point of selling t shirts for that price.
We finally get to see Kanye's shirt dealer😂
“some people are just in it for the money” ,
whats the most expensive piece you’ve sold??
“17 thousand”
😆😆😆
Well damn want to just give it away for free ?
Stfu
Lol this comment cracked me up haha
He's selling it to rich rappers bro ofc u wanna raise tf out of them
not many people he respects because they are in it for the money, yet jerry lorenzo sells gildan tees for 400+
Marcus D blows my mind how he sells a new era hat for 200 bucks
daamn that was cold
he's lowkey in it for the money too, w out this he would be broke
Jerry is so fucking lame
Nigga fuck Jerry Lorenzo and fog. Trash ass brand
i love stories like this. kudos to this guy for not giving up you can tell he’s passionate about his style of work.
Never trust anybody who uses metal hangers lmao
Ahhh, the hipster who sells crap to rich hipsters and constantly is contradicting himself. That's fashion for ya!
your mom the space between contradictions is...interesting.
hipster though? try harder
@@drmodlove what the fuck was that comeback
5:57 "this stuff means too much to me" he says as he uses his thousand dollar t shirts as a couch.
outbackred107 there t shirts it wont damage them
You really think sitting on a 20-60 year old t-shirt is going to damage it?
What I wanna know is what is the actual process for selling a sweatshirt for 17 thousand dollars?? Is he just like "Well this is 20 years old and I ripped it up and look who's on it, so I'm gonna price it at... 17K?" And then Kanye "Sounds great (I am the best), here's a check"
Kevin Deegan it’s like ‘modern art’ that sells for millions of dollars... make a name for yourself and sell. And I wouldn’t be surprised if those paintings are used for money laundering (likewise for clothing)
If you think that 17 thousand dollars means something to Kanye, then you need to get some education. He's one of the richest artists in the game. He can buy all things in his shop, and don't even think about how much he spend on it. Like dude, read something about him and his business moves (producing, feats, fashion, his own fashion brand, sponsoring, live shows, his fucking label that owns artists like TRAVIS SCOTT AND KID CUDI, and prolly much more) and you will know a litlle about how much money he have. To him, buying something for 17 k, it's like you, buying something for 17 dollars in H*M. But, you need to respect him for that. He worked so hard on it, that he actually had some mental breakdowns, after he losed his mother. That's why I love Kanye so much. He's a fucking creative genius, and hardwork genius.
It’s seems like he knows the history of the t shirts like how many were made and so on.
Ricardo, Logan. I don't even need to, but.. So, I like Kanye, and I know things about him. Im a big fan. Yeah. But okay, I hate... someone big.... I hate Swizz Beats. So, he can buy all of his shit, shit on it, and go to the next shop like that, buy everything, and do the same thing. He also work hard, he's also very creative, he's also very talented, he also produced a lot for other artists. He's definitly a hardwork genius, and maybe creative genius too. Like, it's me snitches? I hate it, but im still like: DAMNNNNNN, when I hear it. Better? Do I need to ride artist dick, when I fucking respect and "love" him? Like, what the fuck. I can say same thing about artists I fucking hate. I still can respect them. Maybe cuz... Ricardo..... I actually had mom... and someone actually raised me. Yeah I know I do swear a lot, fucking peasant.
WHOA calm down haha... I never said that money would be a lot for Kanye, just that it's weird to imagine selling and pricing a sweatshirt at 17k
“Couldn’t get a single job”
Usually people that say that really mean “I just don’t want to work “
Nah man getting a job is fucking hard lol
ilikespacedinosaurs
nah not at all. if you can’t find a job in NYC you’re a literal failure.
@@nothanks3980 if=dk about nyc but where I live it is
@nick HELL YES! I sell on Poshmark, and about20 other sites. I design t-shirts on redbubble, teespring,, and 12 other sites, I dumpster dive, I get free products in exchange for reviews, etc etc etc. Point is, there is work out there, hugely profitable work, if you just get off your arse and go do the damn deal. If you can't find work, create work!
For anyone in business... you can relate to this man's story. "Just about as I was going to close shop, this one buyer shows up"
17k for a sweatshirt God damn how much will someone pay for one of my canned farts
Sandoval Bruh sell it as Kanye West's canned fart and hypebeasts will buy it for more
I'll give you $2,000 for it
Sandoval Bruh canned fart is better than regular fart. $5000
1 million dollhairs
CivilWarz 3 million

Kinda hard to believe that he said he sold some of his shirts when he first moved to new York 20 years ago and sold a few shirts to some guy on the street for 200 a piece
jakegetscake I absolutely believe that! Not surprising for NYC
It's actually more believable in NYC since there's so many people and with money. If he said Tulsa, Oklahoma i'd be a lot more skeptical.

17grand for sweatshirt..but I'm not about the money like other dealers. Right.
Just because you know what somethings worth and charge the right price for an item doesn't mean you're "all about the money"
The dude has no employees, he's making thousands and can hire a full staff and setup shop and have his money work for him, but he adores what he does. It's a labor of love. He just so happens to be making thousands doing it. lol
StayLiteral ....hmmm. "But he adores what he does. It's a labor of love. He just so happens to be making thousands doing it." Ok, lol. The dude sets his own price. That'll be 17 grand. Justified cuz I love my job dude. But I'm not about the money..hilarious.
lol dont even bother with these idiots. i cant believe anyone would ever buy a concert shirt for a show they werent even at. biggest fucking posers there are. fucking fools. wearing a band shirt is fine and all, but when people buy tour shirts from a tour they didnt even know about at the time? you dont see the irony here? your missing the whole point of tour shirts. idk why i even bother explaining honestly, they will never get it

Why not just use a luggage bag with wheels! Come on man!
Matt S oof
Lmao nigga throwing out his back and shit
Yeah, that was weird.
Matt S ..... I know why. Cause I asked myself the same thing, but By carrying and lugging all his shit around, it creates the illusion that he's "hard at work". All that struggling is what hes selling.making it easier & rolling around with his shit would devalue it.
He wants it to look like he is working hard
The moment I saw he hand distresses a ‘vintage’ t ruined the whole vibe for me. The main reason I want it vintage is to feel the distress of the actual process of wear. Why buy a t-shirt from 20 years ago after a guy has picked holes to specifically make it look ‘vintage’ ? A top is only worn/vintage to me if it has been truly worn and beat to death
Sam Nee damn spoilers but damn
Nathanb B you clearly didn’t listen/watch. He said he gets carried away with the distressing he does. He made too many holes and now needs to repair them. For me that isn’t a process that should be done to an already ‘vintage’ t-shirt
Sam Nee from being a shirt collector for 20 years I would say he only fabricates the ones that don’t show as much wear. I feel you definitely. But at the same time he probably has idiots like Migos saying “this shit ain’t vintage enough”.
Sam Nee naw your just a douche
