      I think that's why it is so intense... because that's how each of us would experience it. As our little group of family or friends. @@delsinrowe2014 in theory at least, yes... There's plenty of people in this real world that say awkward things at times that are in no way cinematically cool. Especially during arguments and with strangers. Characters in most movies tend to speak with a heightened level of deliberateness and fully formed thoughts, and even their incomplete statements meant to be "natural" have a level of deliberateness to their incompleteness. On the other hand, in real life, people often struggle to know the right thing to say and force out something half-baked because theyre trying to connect with someone they don't truly connect with. People say weird things sometimes.
      That said, there's a terribly fine line between realistic dialog and entertainingly realistic dialog; "real" in the certain cinematic contexts won't resonate with some people no matter how true to life it may be. And I agree that M Night would be better off avoiding "funny" dialog.

So many little subtleties too, the dogs sensing the aliens, Bo with her dreams dropping hints, the evolving flashbacks, the people in the town, Morgan trying to be scientific but also a big little brother, Merrill just being the everyman for the audience and Graham dealing with EVERYTHING as it comes to a head in his own house and family. That shot at night panning across the crop circle is brilliant and beautiful. So many haunting moments. And the insanely slow build manages to not be boring and the payoff at the end is great. Still get goosebumps during the birthday footage when they see the alien. The orchestral hit and the kids screaming... meanacing, clearly not afraid. Wants to be seen. And then Joaquin Phoenix's reaction to the footage drives home how shocking it is. 100% agree with you... he is a good writer, even when he misses he's trying new things, experimenting and often he hits moments where things are just perfect. 1. Why would aliens come to Earth (which is mostly covered in water & has tons of water vapour in the atmosphere) in the first place if water is so deadly to them?
      2. Why are the aliens (who would have to be technologically advanced to travel to Earth) always just skulking around suspiciously without showing any signs of having any technology?
      On top of fixing those plot holes, it also just improves the movie as a whole, because if they're demons rather than aliens then instead of faith just being one of the underlying themes of the movie (as in: Mel Gibsons' character's struggle with his faith after the loss of his wife), every aspect of the entire movie actually becomes an exploration of faith.
      I'm not religious at all myself, but Signs is much better as a movie about faith and religion than it is as a movie about aliens.

      @SquigglyP 2 года назад +2

      @@JamesVSCinema Not only what has been said, but there are actually connections to crop circles. Back in "ye olden days" when there was farm land all over the place, people (young people, mostly) would sneak out into fields and have parties and shit out in the back 40 in the tall crops or long grass and they'd clear out a chunk of it to have their drinking / orgy parties. Lots of older folk would tell stories about satan worshipers and witches, and before that there were 'fairy rings', which are actual things. There's a type of crop fungus that tends to form in circles or ring-like patterns (not this big and not in shit like corn but other crops). And then there's downdrafts and shit that would happen during storms that would damage a chunk of field and then get found days later, so the connection to the storm wasn't always apparent and they'd assume it was witches or something.
      So there's that connection, and there was an article I read once upon a time about a book that the author of the article assumed that Shyamalan must have had that was like a collection of old american folklore and supposedly that book contained little guides and stories on how to keep demons out of your house and what attracts them and stuff like that, and there were correlations to things in this book in the film. At the time I tried to track down some evidence of this, but I was unable to unearth anything to correlate any of the claims made, so that one's not really a sure thing.
      Now, I'm an atheist and I obviously don't believe in shit like demons or miracles, but I do like it when film take that mythology and do something interesting or unusual with it, and I like good storytelling, and Gibson's character has a hell of an arc in this film.
      This movie perfectly illustrates Shyamalan's strengths. 4 characters, all strong, very focused on their relationships with each other, very few weirdo side-characters to deal with. His previous two films were the same. A few characters and a story that focuses on them almost entirely the entire way through. His later films started to introduce more and more characters and less of a focus on their relationships and more of a focus on how weird and quirky they were. The results were not good.
      Honestly, I thought he'd be a good Airbender director, cause it's mostly a story of three friends (4 later on) and a couple of 'bad guys' and those relationships. It's a plot that should have been right up his alley, but he was in full-on quirkiness mode and somehow forgot how to write a relationship.

    Genuinely one of my favourite scary movies! One thing I think you'll appreciate on the second time round: when the dog seems ill in the opening few minutes, Graham says they'll call the local doctor, rather than the vet (M. Night's character) because he doesn't want to contact him. Only a small detail, but it just adds to the background of the family :) Also when they receive the best baby monitor reception is when they all come together as a family!

The scene where the alien walks out from behind the bushes came on and it scared me so bad I screamed and ran out of the room, while my whole family laughed at me. Needless to say I was traumatized but I’ve grown to love jump scares 😆

    Gotta admit, this movie had me on edge as I watched it in the theater. I thought the mood it set up was very effective, especially seeing the alien on TV. I had some problems with some of the alien characteristics... like if they were vulnerable to water, why were they naked? If I was one of them I would put on a raincoat or something.

    Love this movie. It had a legitimate psychological impact on me growing up. My dad showed it to my older brother snd I when it first came out and man it scared the hell out of us. We grew up in a very rural area just like this where we were surrounded by our cornfields and thick forests. So naturally after we saw this movie and the corn was up every year you made sure you didn’t go outside at night unless you absolutely had to. And if you did then you made sure you at least had a pocket knife. Even to this day that time of year I am strapped, locked, and loaded every time I go outside at night.

    I know it's not everybody's cup of tea, but I've always appreciated how M Night Shyamalan always seems to incorporate faith and healing into the stories he tells (the good ones, at least). It's very particular to his vision and to me it's always been very effective in making me connect emotionally to the characters. It's not because I'm a religious person (cause i'm not), it's more like.. I can tell it's something very important to him and his upbringing? So it feels genuine? And then the healing part.. In Sixth Sense, I feel like it was about healing from your own past mistakes and regrets. The Village is about healing from trauma. And this is about healing from loss. I just think it's very cool when filmmakers share something that comes from a genuine place, I think you can feel it. And I think that is what his other not-so-great movies lack. I will still always admire M Night Shyamalan for his good work

    I do want to add something. The scene when they are fixing eat and the son blames his dad, I can say from experience that grief does so much to you and trying to process that grief and deal with a life changing event like alien invasion can tear someone apart. Sometimes your feelings will not be what they should be. Him blaming his dad was from deep inside. Anger is a a grief response no one talks about.

    Something I always loved was the thought that the aliens are always watching, you just cant see them, and the kids reaction to their dog going crazy probably influenced the aliens actions, he responded with violence and killed the dog so they decided at invasion time they would be hostile, maybe they gave the dogs alien laxatives or something to make them sick, other people (farmers specifically) would most likely put their animals down, theres not much evidence of any of that other than the 2 main dogs but its a thought I had. This is one of those movies we can all speculate on forever and never get bored, even the most outlandish theories are fun to hear, like how the aliens are actually demons, it gets wacky.
