My favorite Shyamalan movie. That dinner table scene just crushes me everytime. No one can play devestation like Mel Gibson, and in that scene he is a man terrified for his family, but he has no choice but to be the strong one and hold it all together. The heartbreak in his eyes over it all always gets me (especially when his son says that he hates him).
Yes, it's one of favorites too!
I know there's water in our atmosphere and it would kill the Aliens...It's a movie relax, I tell people..
You prefer Signs over The Sixth Sense?
@@WoahLookAtThatFreak - Signs is my personal favorite; I just enjoy it for a number of reasons. The Sixth Sense I do think is a better film overall, if you're asking me for a ranking. If I'm trying to get someone to jump into Shyamalan's work, I will mention Signs, but it probably won't be the first movie I tell them to watch (it would depend on the person). I'm more than happy to differentiate, especially with movies, that there can be a difference between someone's favorite movie and what is the best movie.
Get fucking rekt by that alien jump scare, Maple.😂
When Bo asks why they can't get girlfriends is perfection!! For such a little kid, she got some great acting chops
Yeah she was a top tier child actor
I remember watching this in the theater and that line along with the part after they come out of the basement and she says they are dancing like this got the biggest laughs of the movie.
@@Diegesis Really great in Little Miss Sunshine too.
this movie is amazing cause most think its a movie about aliens… its truly a crushingly realistic movie about grief and loss dressed as a sci fi horror movie
And those are actual Demons, not Aliens.
@@freeheeler00 maybe metaphorically but those are the literal definition of aliens?
@@freeheeler00 Do you mean like the aliens are a metaphor for his demons that he overcomes cause then yeah I 100% agree with you
Honestly, they could be seen as either demons or aliens. He left it ambiguous for a reason. There never is any kind of official explanation of what is happening and many of the tropes are cut more from a supernatural film than an alien invasion. For instance, Mel's character talks about his little girl being born an angel and she leaves water all over the place that we later find out burns the invaders, not unlike holy water that we've seen in vampire and/or demonic possession films a few hundred times. The voices coming through the radio and the inability to use doors is really nothing new to the supernatural genre either. Plus you hear a guy talking on the radio about how they used primitive or ancient methods (in the Middle East?) to fight off the invaders (I forget how its actually worded), and when you couple that with the fact that Mel's character ends up finding his faith again leads me to believe those were demons because the ending never made sense to me when I thought it was an alien invasion flick. @@jfish0723
This movie is something. I still have no idea what the army guy was going for with that performance! 😂
I feel like he was directed that way to give the audience a feeling of unease and think that maybe he was an alien. Dunno! Even as a kid, I was like, what’s up with this guy?
He talks with the same cadence as Colonel Troutman in First Blood lol
lol i hear it
I also think that he was purposely directed to act a little crazy/seem like a goofball. We don’t realise it upon first viewing, but he gives away what is about to happen in the third act. The audience doesn’t take him seriously because he seems crazy, but after we watch the movie a second time the scene comes across very differently!
I disagree. I thought Phoenix did an AMAZING performance
"I'm insane with anger! I'm losing my mind!" 🤣🤣🤣
Mel is such a dorky preacher. It really is a subdued performance most of the movie, but he brings out the gravitas at the 'last supper' and his prayers over Morgan.
Shyamalan can be such a mixed bag. It's crazy because in between a lot of silliness in his movies, there are moments of profound beauty and incredible emotional depth. but then he pulls some hack-y crap in the third act that just frustrates the hell out of me. He would be truly great if he weren't trying so hard to either cram some kind of message down your throat or pull some big twist at the end of his movies. it's like ok, you hit a home-run with 6th Sense, but stop trying to chase that lightning in a bottle over and over. it's kinda like how obsessed george lucas got about the idea of the 2nd movie in a trilogy having to be "dark."
yes it feels like bands who never stop trying to re-create their first album.
I always loved the alien on the roof jump in the beginning! Its used quite often in scary films where you dont realise whats in the background.
It may not be scary to be people nowadays but that Brazilian birthday party image scared the shit out of people in the theaters
Right?!?
this came out when i was just old enough to be left home alone at night when my parents would go out. i rented this and my fear was VISCERAL, the memory of pausing it and checking out the windows for aliens is still fresh lol.
yeah that woulda messed me up. i think it's possibly the perfect "family horror".
I remember seeing this as a kid and to this day it's still pretty creepy to me. Just the suspense of not showing us what they're seeing was great.😊
The children in this movie are perfect for their roles and absolutely believable as siblings.
No one cries as good as Mel Gibson. Not one person.
Oh you did see the sixth sense you just mentioned it at the end that was a great one, in this one i like how the comedy is just calmly there and the emotion plus some jump scares and i still get chills when he connects all the dots
The scene where they say goodbye to the wife, was filmed the very morning of 9/11. Like, it literally happened just minutes before they started filming. So the entire mood during those scenes is very real.
There was a featurette where M. Night explains the movie is inspired by War of the Worlds so this explains why characters and shots are the way they are. It's not just an "ism", he picks these shots for a reason. This also explains the water thing. Because Bo states there's "something in the water" which rectifies the common misconception that their weakness is water when it isn't.
I do think this movie is far better and more effective than people give it credit for. Most of his films are because they know what they are and aren't trying t be anything else. It's just a case of how well he tells that story. In fact I think he has more hits than misses in that regard.
Also, Unbreakable is the best film. Objectively. 😋
I wonder if the guy ranting about soda was onto something? Maybe a chemical compound we take for granted acts as a solvent to them?
I don't know why the Banksy comment took me out, but I laughed for like two minutes straight at that.
26:25 - bro how are you gonna roll your eyes during the best shot of the film
cause it's mad corny
I have no idea how they cried during other movies, honestly. They seem like they're above everything. 😂
@@Diegesis Or you're a condescending prick. There's always that option 🙄
I was seven in the theater and screamed at the brazil scene 😂
"It's behiiiind" is something i still quote 😂
Coming up next,
Lionel Pritchard and the Wolfington Brothers with, "Here's Your Sign." 🎶
definitely sounds like a bluegrass band lol
I love that when the aliens are near you don't hear any insects. Usually fields like that are loud
Exterior doors are solid, and interior doors tend to be hollow. you gotta use more boards to cover the hollow doors. Do you know how easy it is to punch through a hollow door! dont be a victim to an alien, secure the hollow doors....
also i know this is an old farm house and maybe they have solid doors throught which could be the case
9:10 "Does he think it's Banksy or something" KILLED me.
I've been wanting to discuss this film recently after realizing I was missing a huge key that was staring me in the face for the last 20+ years.
I like this movie up until they reveal that its water that kills them, if they can build invisible spaceships there is no way they would be dumb enough to land on a planet thats covered in it and get out completely naked.
You missed the message. They are Demons, not Aliens. The water lying around was holy water blessed by Bo, the little girl. Remember when he told her she looked like an Angel when she was born. It's a religious movie, not Sci-Fi.
@@sanmiguel3280 Yet they were scared of the lake.
I love how ANYBODY, no matter their personal spiritual beliefs, can appreciate the acting and the writing enough to be sad when a man of God loses his faith and then happy when he gets it back. I've seen more than one reactor start to make a religous joke or laugh at the idea of God, and then get emotional when they see what's really going on here, and truly happy for Graham when he starts believing again. This movie was never about the aliens, they were a side show.
4:58 - It doesn’t sound natural when Mel Gibson curses? Yeah. This is a movie 😂
haha
The music in the climax might be my favorite 3 minutes of movie score ever
I find it pretty funny when people who have no where near as much talent as Shyamalan try to say that this film is garbage and then suggest even more garbage suggestions 😂
"I'M INSANE WITH ANGER!"
Lol I love your reaction to this! "Do you think they're Banksy" 😂😂
The one thing you should not forget when your kid has asthma is to forget the medicine in an emergency especially when he is going to be panicking too
Lionel Prichard and the cursinger brothers works just as well hahaha
Literally a top tier movie!!!
Good to see Chad back for a movie!
I disagree. I think the writing was great for everyone and love Phoenix's character.
He washes out of having a career in the major league, only to be there, at the moment his extended family needa him.
I love that this movie is about family and faith. No other director of the time was making major studio films like this.
M Knight made several. To the point that when Hollywood finally figured it out. I truly believe insiders worked to sabotage his work and drum him from Hollywood.
There are actually 8 Culkins...not just Macaulay, Kieran, and Rory 😱
maple chose violence today lmao gonna love the comments
9:20 *alien clicking sounds translated*
“Hey lil’ mama let me whisper in your ear”
As a nerd farmer, just saying, crop circles = not cool. I'd be invoicing these aliens for damages and revenue loss, and in this state that would be felony level with our ag protections. See you in court, ailems.
Contact your House Rep about federal crop circle agriculture protections!
This is so disappointing. This movie is fantastic and I feel like this reaction made a complete joke of it.
It's a bit of a joke to be fair. That shot of the alien in Mexico on the home camera is hilarious. I always enjoyed the film, but you gotta laugh at some of the stuff in it. The premise itself is just mental. That an alien race with the technology to actually come here could be beaten by water within 24hrs of their attack beginning is pretty funny. Would they not have had a contingency?
@@brownsey1 well there is a large part of the movie that mentions its possible their planet is no longer habitable. be it they ran out of resources or who knows what. and that earth could be there last chance. but can you blame them. there are humans that live in places where every animal can kill you. even tiny ones. weather can kill you and its straight up nearly uninhabitable lol
To be fair, this was around the time that Night's writing style began to change. Certainly, there were aspects of the characters and their internal struggles that were quite good, but other parts tended to pull people out of the tension and laugh when it wasn't intended. Night does characters quite well but his dialogue tends to be over melodramatic to the point it's oddly funny.
@brownsey1 I disagree.
I saw this in theaters when it came out. That moment scared everyone. We have to remember this movie is from over 20 years ago.
I just think if you're going to watch a serious movie, give it the respect it deserves or don't bother. Especially for reaction content as you will be alienating a large portion of your base audience.
It's absolutely okay to dislike a movie. Different strokes for different folks.
This just felt really icky in my opinion.
@commanderwyro4204 As I said, would they not have had a contingency? They have the tech to get here, which means they are far more advanced than us. Surely they would have prepped for a planet that is 70% water since it's their cryptonite.
Why Maple matching the stuffed animal?
Pabu is my muse 🧡🖤
adorable@@MapleDivine
Nice to see chad on screen again
MNS is hit or miss for me. I loved this movie way more than others and Sixth Sense is amazing of course, but my guilty pleasure of his is Lady in the Water. I didn't like some other stuff he has done, but I won't put the dude down. He is a genius at what he does, no doubt.
I love The Village. The music is so beautiful.
Excellent reaction! Why doesn't anybody react to The Village or Lady in the water? Two of M. Night's movies.
I've seen a few but it's probably cause they're not his most famous movies
Unpopular opinion: Lady in the Water is actually a very well made movie.
Great movies but I hope they don't do them with their attitude.
@@Hydelsiusit is. Really classic, solid storytelling.
Army dude is if Dwight Schrute joined up
In reality i doubt the news would ever show us real footage of an Alien being lol
It's a treat to randomly see Chad in a video that I expect he'll also edit. Good stuff.
6:40 if Meryl played in todays game no one would care he struck out that much if he hit bombs
lol good point
Mel may have his issues but the man is a damn good actor.
agreed
"Say what you will about Mel Gibson but the sonofabitch knows story structure"

Another great movie is the sixth sense have you guys seen that one it was nominated for many Oscars maybe react to that next time if you haven't already seen it
What was with the eye roll at the end?
corny zoom
@@Diegesis Or you're just a talentless condescending goof who has the audacity to think you could do anything REMOTELY close to this. The arrogance is hilarious 😂
It’s actually pronounced M. Night Shyamalamadingdong
Scary Movie is a must after watching this!! 😂
I saw this film in the theater it was awesome!
The jump scares would have got me so bad in a theater 😭
@@MapleDivine They definitely got me!
I went to film school a long time ago and one of my professors went to graduate school with M. Night Shyamalan. He said that his student films were all terrible, and when he saw the Sixth Sense he couldn't believe it was the same guy. He theorized that he came up with the basic plot, but it was heavily modified by hollywood to be better. Then, once he got more famous he had a lot more control over his films and a lot less people changing his ideas, hence why his movies got decidedly worse through his career. My professor also mentioned that his parents tended to give him a lot of money to fund his movies because they were wealthy.
that rings true. I'll say though that I really like some of his newer stuff like Split and Glass.. as well as The Servant series. I wonder if he just knows now to lay off the gimmicky stuff more and recruit the right people to his projects to make them better. I imagine that's a big part of why some directors are more successful than others.
@swish007 I've only watched Split (of his newer stuff) and I thought it was very good.
I actually really liked Split as well. Didn't see Glass, but I'd be willing to check it out. I saw a bunch of his movies in the theater back in the day, and the first one where I thought it was a little weak compared to his previous works was The Village. It's not a bad movie. It just didn't blow my mind. I forget what came next, but it wasn't even as good as The Village. I feel like Split was the first good movie he had in a long time. And I think that's mostly due to James McAvoy and Anya Taylor Joy's acting.
Do. Not. Talk. To Maple about Shyamalan's The Last Airbender.😂
Now, Unbreakable was really good and so was Split. Glass...less so.
i really like unbreakable too but i havent seen it in a long time
Signs hits so different. It’s such an emotional rollercoaster. Such an amazing movie to me.
Yay Chad
YOUR CAPTIONS SAY _DIET JESUS_ TOO!
Sometimes you're too tired for full strength jesus
@@Diegesis I'm a fan of Jesus Zero, personally. 🤷🏼
fewer calories, same great taste!
👍🏾
There's a fairly compelling fan theory that they aren't aliens at all, but demons. Spark notes: all the religious iconography and recurring themes of rediscovering faith, them being harmed by holy water blessed by the pure and innocent child, their behavior as "tricksters" who get held up by wooden lock mechanisms and unable to open/cross doors, etc that I forgot.
Fun stuff
I've never been more excited to see one of y'alls videos.
Praying With Anger. Before he got famous.
Swing Away Merill. One of my favorite scenes ever. People in the theater cheered
The only movie ive been kicked out of 😂
Why?🤣
Lol finally! 😂
Diet Jesus?
Thanks for saving me 44 min of my time then lol. It’s fine not to like something, but laughing throughout and trashing it, eh, off putting. I’m extremely anti religious but I was able to enjoy this movie and not make a mockery of it. Same vibes as Exorcism of Emily Rose. Super ridiculous but well told.
Maple! Have you seen M Night's The Village? HIGHLY recommended!
If there has been viewership or subs dropping off this is an example of a reason the viewers have dropped off and this is an example. Don’t watch shit you know you won’t enjoy.
everytime i watch this movie, it pisses me off when they leave the dog outside
Galactically cancelled! 🤣🤣🤣
There's a theory that this movie is not about Aliens
We see a creature that:
- Don't use any equipment
- Is afraid of water
- Has camouflage
- Has venom
The other thing we see is:
- The lights in the sky
So the theory says: The demons walks on earth, the angels appears and defeat them.
This is explain the religiousity behind the movie for me.
That scene from Brazil... Bro... We brazilians do not speak english. Here this scene is a complete nightmare.
The birth of the “tin foil” theory.
Dam cant watch chads here
lol
Maple is hilarious. Galaticly canceled is crazy😂😂😂😂😂
Each of this director's films have some manifestation of Christ. In this one, it is the basement scene where the boy is having an asthma attack. Mel is in the position of Christ who is with us through all of our troubles (Psalm 139). Ironically, Mel curses God for the asthma, only to find out that it was the asthma which kept the boy from dying from the poison gas administered by the alien.
So, here's the enlightening part. If you take Aang and the gang and Zuko and Iroh and the others and give them the tone and characterizations from Signs, it explains a lot about what Shyamalan did to The Last Airbender. That's why it's all dour and depressing and everyone is wooden and lifeless and the dialogue is all awkward. Airbender is exactly the movie Shyamalan was trying to make. There were no mistakes.
There were a ton of mistakes. Doing things on purpose doesn't mean they were done right.
The real twist is that the aliens are really angels and Maple was right! It was the Rapture! And the angels are made of heavenly marbled angel cake!
mmmmm cake
you need a new kitchen knife or just sharpen it.
I have mixed feelings about this one.
The build up and the alien scares - especially the one in the closet - are genuinely superb.
But that ending? The "swing away" nonsense and the alien death by water? Horrible.
yeah exactly. it's got some gems and some wackness and its up to you to decide how you feel about it.
Lmaoooo Chads eye roll when the brother gripped the bat 😂 i was mid eye roll too and saw chad doing it too and had to laugh
Yeah Chad needs to stay behind the scenes.
@@bchamp1 lmao why?
no eye rolls allowed
I never before realized this was a comedy.
I call it the last ass bender. It just wasn’t that great
Just like the show 😍
This is, by far, the worst reaction video I have ever seen. The attitude of the guy is totally unserious and condescending; It, then, rubs off on the girl, tainting her commentary and interpretations too.
This was a weak reaction to a great movie.
The movie is great. Your negativity is simply due to the religious themes. It’s hilarious how Christianity makes you both so uncomfortable. Much like the True Detective reaction.
No no no. The religion works here. The corny jokes is what doesn't work for me.
@@DiegesisNah, we see you. Nice try though.
M Night does like 1 good movie, then 3 bad ones. 1 good one, 3 bad ones. This was not a good one. thought the alien was tacky looking lol
I really disliked this movie. The plot holes and the way it's shot kept me from enjoying almost ever scene.
It does make sense to laugh through it, and not take it seriously.
water? lame
typical low tier youtube reaction. too much laughing and missing every detail
Great reaction! This is an interesting movie! I would also really like to see your detailed reaction to the cult film Robocop 1987! Especially before the release of a new world game based on this movie. Do you have any plans to make a reaction to this film?🦾🔥
Robocop is the shiz. love that movie.
I will really look forward to your reaction to this cool movie! I hope it will be very soon. Thanks!
