Thanking both of you a lot!! I have just started driving. Though I don't live in a hilly area, but sometime this type of situation comes when you have to climb a flyover or any steep slope. Especially when you are in a dense traffic it becomes really hard to stop your car banging on the car just behind you . You won't believe me, I was literally jumping over the clutch and accelerator! :D Thanks again for this small and super effective tip.
Since you holding car on half clutch with out breaking you don’t have to give acceleration to move up . Just release clutch little more the car will move ahead that is safer when you are in traffic jam on up hill. If you give acceleration then it might be uncontrollable some time .

Who says to drive in 3rd gear during downhill???? Come to our place you will see sometimes we use 1st gear to control the car during downhill. It only happens(using 3rd gear) when the inclination is not very steep...when you regularly drive on hills it is your instinct which will tell you when and where you have to use which gear...there is nothing like textbook particularly when you drive on hills.Similarly many uphill roads you can use 3rd or 4th even top gear depending on the cars...but many uphill roads require 1st gear depending on the inclination.For example you can easily drive with top gear from Guwahati to Shilong but you will need a proper 4wd car if you drive from Manybhanjan to Sandakphu.The golden rule of driving on hills is to maintain the proper engine rpm.Once you control the engine rpm you will control the vehicle....

Half clutch is not an good option....Just do 1 thing Release the clutch and press the accelerator as quick as possible but in limit(Never press accelerator too hard because it will raise your Rpm to higher level ) 🙂

now a days most cars comes with hill hold for 2-3 sec, which make it easier to pick the car in steep hills. Also top end cars comes with auto-hold which make it buttery smooth experience in steep hills as well.
Hi, The technique of pulling the car upwards would not be successful in Almora underground paid parking or while going to CSD canteen near paltan bazaar...If you can do that successfully then I will follow the same technique of yours...

Rule of gears on mountains for manual transmission. Use the same gear that was required to be used for the climb as to go down it. The steeper the climb, the lower the gear needed to climb it and the more effective engine braking while descending it. Jis gear se gaadi chadhaiye ho use gear se hi niche aao.
When going downhill use gears depending upon inclination of that particular road. 3rd gear may be too much for stiff downhill roads. When I had driven from Darjeeling to Mirik (Downhill) I had mostly driven on 2nd gear. Even with 2nd gear, I had to apply breaks continuously to slow down my car.

I want to add one important point. While coming down hill most people use frequent breaking that is very dangerous. Frequent breaking causes break fail. Always come down hill in 2 or 3 gear with minimum breaking. I am from kashmir and i have 24 years + experience of driving in hills
But I have one query that Downhill mein agar car ko rokna pad jaye as road narrow hai and samne car aagyi then clutch & brake dono dabani hai kya rokne ke liye car low gear pe ya only paddle break dabani hai without clutch ? Bhai pahadi pe her 1 min pe jaroorat padhti..... Itna hand break use karoge to engine pe jor padhta hai.... Clucth plate 5000 km chalge per engine kharab hoga to gaadi hi khatam..... Hamre pahad mein hand break use kerne wale ko nauseekhiya kehte hai
Do you know how does Bus and Truck driver drives uphill? They don't have handbreak Half clutch technique is universal. When there is 5 km traffic uphill jam, using handbreak after every few seconds doesn't seems to be a good idea.

I think half clutch works on slight uphill but it doesn't work on very very steep hill. That's my experience.

Half clutch technique is universal.
When there is 5 km traffic uphill jam, using handbreak after every few seconds doesn't seems to be a good idea.
