    Max is probobly the most melodic and creative drummer around. He makes the drums sing. He is a genius.

      Jack DeJohnette, too. Even Mitch Mitchell (with Jimi Hendrix.) You are right. These guys make drums sing. They are "painters" with drumsticks (or brushes or tympani sticks.) Artists😅

    I've always enjoyed Max Roach. He approaches the set like it is a real musical instrument. Not many people can play as artistically as he.

    amazing...I dig the Max Roach videos here. I just bought my first kit three months ago. Lot of my fave drummers like Peart list Max as their influences. Id never heard/seen him till now on UTube. This vid proves what u can do on a 5pc kit! instead of having 10 Zildjians and a double bass..etc.

    Neil specifically cited this particular piece as the impetus behind his "waltz section" of his drum solo in "anatomy of a drum solo".
    Granted, he was referring to the 50s when Max first created this, but people today are so impressed with speed and flailing that they refuse to realize that everything popular today started with simple building blocks such as this more then 50 years ago.

    Many many people who listened to this knew that Max was the man. The late great Dizzy Gillespie called Max the Painter simple because Max gave you a melodic bouquet of percussive sounds that was Max and of course he had the sonic creativity down to a nut shell

    Roach,Rich, and Morello were huge influences on Bonham. "The Drum Also Waltzes" was one of Bonham's homage to Roach that he performed with Zepplin earler in their day. That solo eventually led to Moby Dick for Bonham. If you listen to "Dazed and Confused" it follows the same structure.

  • @drummer78
    @drummer78 17 лет назад +2

    Yeah, try it yourself sometime. The "Drum Also Waltzes" This is one of the more legendary drum solos of all of jazz. The clip above is just one small snippet and a demonstration of a larger piece. A lot of people today seem to think that if it isn't the Mike Mangini "Fastest drums on earth" approach then it sucks. Shows how uneducated we have become.

    the thing he does with the bass and high-hat beat, John Bonham does the same on Moby Dick 1970.

  • @guitarman63mm
    @guitarman63mm 15 лет назад

    Exactly. Same deal with Miiles. He could play at 240 bpm when he chose, but his less is more approach made him different.

  • @jeffkahl

    Bonzo totally used the "1 e and a" pattern in the live Moby Dick solo! That's fuckin cool!

  • @thndesmondsaid

    Im a drummer myself, i think the hardest technique he does here is when he does the snare and symbols and he always hits the symbols so lightly and cleanly. great solo.

    Bonzo plays this idea in Seattle, July 17, 1977. Same 1 2 3 feel with different attack emphasized between tom-toms, bass-drum and snare.

    Max Roach is a beast. I enjoy all types of drumming, it's all very skillful, I wish I could drum like this. I think Grant McFarland of This or the Apocalypse is great too, but he more than likely couldn't do this, and Max more than likely couldn't play "Mauna Kea" either. You can't really compare hard rock and metal drummers like Grant McFarland or Matt Greiner or even Travis Barker to jazz drummers like Roach, Blakey, or big banders like Rich and Krupa. Just different styles, but all awesome.

    I’m sorry,I’m expecting a lot of abuse here but I’m struggling to get anything out of this and other clips of Max playing. He’s a great player no doubt about that but I just don’t get anything out of this or his playing in general. Sorry.

    I will never be comfortable with a Jazz drummer using matched grip as his main grip.
    Here, Max's buzz roll sounds like a high school kid. Very poor.
    What the hell was he thinking, changing over to matched grip like this?
    Instead of becoming a better player as time went on, he was far worse than he was in the 50's and 60's.
    What the hell?
