    Thank you so much for helping change a prevalent culture of guitar rock stars in worship teams these days so they play more suitable stuff and not distract!!!

    I do a combination of swells with stacked delays and picking triads. Last night we had about a half hour of prophetic ministry time where we played in C but not based on a song and I switched to picking but staying within the confines of C triads and arpeggios because the piano progressions called for a melody which swells couldn't really achieve and stayed on a clean tone with lots of delay. Just don't go all rock star mode and let the spirit lead

    • @petemalins
      @petemalins  7 лет назад

      Nick Koehler Yeah I actually do a similar thing when there's an extended ministry time

  • @anthonymaloney6838
    @anthonymaloney6838 7 лет назад

    I would also recommend continuing with whatever riff or melody is prominent in the chorus or bridge, if the pastor starts talking after a song; you still want to ride the volume pedal to control the volume and dynamics, so as not to overpower. Swells are good to have in the toolbox, but sometimes they are overwhelming; it just depends on what the message is about.

      Anthony Maloney Yeah that works too

    It all depends on where the church is at that very moment. If the church is an moment of deepness and complete take over then you can play these sounds. Otherwise if you church is in a moment of motivation and excitementment ready to dance for God then doing the Jazz chords fine to play.

      Yes it was great! Yes I play and played in my church. I am just starting to learn to improvise during worship songs...I played a lot of blues with all the pentatonic scales. But when I use these it sounds not that good always to much blues ;) Do you have some tips for me? Thanks!

    • @petemalins

      felix arnold That's great! For improvising to worship songs, most of the time I use the Major Scale, not the blues/minor pentatonic scale

      Hi Pierre, I'm not sure about the Zoom gfx, but it will probably only do simple delay and basic reverb. You could try the Zoom MS-70CDR pedal, which has many types of delay, reverb & chorus.
      Another good reverb pedal that isn't too expensive is the Boss RV-5

    Hey I've led worship for a few years with acoustic but am wanting to pick up electric. What direction could you point me to to start learning shapes and nice finger pick chords (thinking Hillsong)? I only know the basic chords and bar chords up the fret in key of E. I want to take it to the next level thanks!

    • @petemalins
      @petemalins  7 лет назад +4

      marshal brown that's great! Electric is fun. I would suggest learning about "TRIADS". Just type in "guitar triads" to RUclips and there should be lots of lessons on it.
      And just learn the original electric guitar parts to the songs - there are lots of tutorials on RUclips these days showing you exactly how to play the electric guitar parts to contemporary worship songs

    • @stepinside2007
      @stepinside2007 7 лет назад +3

      marshal brown use some compressor and a booster to make your sound more powerful but good to the ear. Dont use metal or heavy distorted pedals. overdrive will do. grab some ideas from Nigel hendroffs gears and how he uses it.

    • @Mdogbrown
      @Mdogbrown 7 лет назад

      Peter Malins I bought a Fender Deluxe Roadhouse Stratocaster and love it. I'm now looking for a great amp for cleans then will add pedals. What amps would you suggest for great cleans? thank you

    • @petemalins
      @petemalins  7 лет назад +2

      marshal brown Awesome! Congrats!
      In terms of amps, it obviously depends on your budget - but if you're looking for a smaller tube amp, I'd go for a Fender Blues Junior, a Fender Bass breaker (20w version), a Vox AC15 or even AC10.
      My home amp, which I use to record these videos, is actually a Peavey Classic 30, which is a good tube amp too.
      On Sundays for church, I actually use a Fender Blues Junior (due to space and noise constraints), and it sounds great.
      And obviously they'll be much cheaper if you buy them used - but again it depends on your budget.
      Just try them at the guitar store and see which one you like.
      Happy shopping! :-)

      marshal brown BTW I had a quick listen to a few songs on your RUclips channel - very nice! Nice playing singing and songwriting! Keep it up!

    • @petemalins
      @petemalins  7 лет назад

      Omar Perez Well I'm not familiar with the Digitech rp500, but you need to combine delay and reverb. An analog type delay is best (turn the repeats up) and a hall reverb (turn the mix & decay levels up).

    • @challeis1
      @challeis1 7 лет назад

      Haha.

    • @petemalins
      @petemalins  7 лет назад +3

      Hey Garrick, Actually I play a Stratocaster simply because it was the first proper electric guitar I bought about 16 years ago - and at that time I thought Strats were cool. But I also have a Gibson Les Paul now.
      But the reason a lot of worship guitarists play Fender Stratocasters or Telecasters is mainly because the low output single-coil pickups sound a lot clearer that humbuckers - and that is generally better for most worship songs.
      Guitars with high output humbuckers are great for hard rock and metal, but not necessarily the best for worship music.
