    Welcome to the Z8 community! It is a joy to use as you say. The Nikon lenses are simply tops for wildlife as well.

    Thanks for the video Damian, looks lovely in that part of the world. I wish Canon would make some more affordable 600 and 800 primes like Nikon. I have the R5 mk1 with the 100-500L which is great but would love a lightweight 600 prime ( not their current extendable ones ). One day Canon might see the light so to speak 😊

      Hello Doug, thank you for the comment!
      I completely agree, I wish they'd make some too. Like the 600mm & 800mm lenses are nice and lightweight but being stuck at F11, it's tough (much like the 200-800mm at F9).
      Being able to get one of Nikons lightweight primes was one of the main reasons I switched. I absolutely adore their 600mm F6.3.

    Great choice, just a tip. Slowly, slowly lower the shutter speed and you will get much cleaner RAW files too. Since the lens is very lightweight and has awesome stabilisation.
    First take a few safe shots at higher shutter speed, when the bird is perched lower the ISO take more bursts at lower shutter speeds. You can handhold this lens even at 1/60-1/80th of a shutter speed.
    Great photos btwn. 👍

      Heya, thanks for the tip! I'd never usually think of shooting that low with such a long lens but I'll give it a shot. Cheers!

    I was slightly confused at first as I was sure you were going to say Olympus when you talked about size and weight and then you pulled out a massive Nikon lol 😂
    Everything is a compromise after all ;)

      Haha not quite Olympus levels of lightness but a good 800g lighter... Means I can carry a few more snacks out on the trail 😎

      @damianjohnwildlife I'm glad both Canon and Nikon got their mojo back these days I just wish they were a bit more competitive with the price/performance.
      How will you cope now? As a Nikon shooter you can't go around looking down on everyone and telling everyone they should have bought a Canon camera now? 😆😆😆
      You seem like a nice chap so Nikon will suit you better haha

    • @damianjohnwildlife
      @damianjohnwildlife  3 месяца назад +1

      Same! I'm glad both brands have a lot more compelling options these days (that Z6 III looks tasty as heck). A bit of healthy competition is always good for innovation.
      As a Nikon shooter though, I can quietly look down on all Canon shooters and feel comfortable knowing that Nikon... Is the better choice 😉 🥔 #ILovePotatoCameras

    Z8 is great choice.ATM Z8 is 3800€ and Z6III is 3000€ so I'd choose Z8. Or A1. LOL

    I’d be interested in your views comparing the canon and nikon set up. I’ve heard the canon autofocus is a little better than nikon for birds but I’d be interested in your experience.

    • @damianjohnwildlife
      @damianjohnwildlife  4 месяца назад +1

      It's an interesting point.
      I used to own a Z9 which I used for low light concerts and the autofocus was mind blowingly good. Likewise, I took the Z8 out last night to photograph a prom and it was incredible, never once missed. For birds however, there have been times when I've been photographing a stationary perched bird and it just hasn't wanted to lock on, the AF planted squarly on the background not willing to move. Forcing me to shift position, photograph on something different a little closer then hope the bird is still perched where I left it. It's done this a few times using a few different focus modes and autofocus selection box sizes.
      I'd assume this was down to the lens more so but either way, it's not something I experienced that often when using the Canon gear. I can only hope that Nikon implements a firmware update which helps with AF performance for this partiucular lens or it could be something I'm personally doing wrong which I could improve on, only time will tell.
      Cheers for the comment!
