- Red Harlow is the main character of Red Dead Revolver. He is the only protagonist in the Red Dead Universe to actually survive the events of the game he is in. He is a straight up gangster, and when compared to Arthur Morgan and John Marston he certainly stands his own ground. Today, let's take a look back at Red Dead Revolver and more importantly Red Harlow, the hero of the legend.

Lumbago is no joke. It is a degenerative condition of the spine that was once very common in men who had spent too much time in the saddle.

To see Red Harlow, John Marston, and Arthur Morgan all standing together is just so badass to me...What's even more shocking to me is how fucking amazing Red Harlow looks as a remake character. It literally is perfect and exactly how i imagined he would look if they EVER did a remake of Red Dead: Revolver . He looks amazing. Shouts out to the person who re-imagined him. Im so used to seeing him in low polygon and all pixelly in the classic video game on ps2, but to see this wow ..We need Red Harlow to come back.

The way I see it, Red Dead's three main protagonists represent different gunslinger tropes, expanding greately on those. Red Harlow is motivated by revenge and fame, trying to live up to his father's greatness while avenging his death. John Marston is a family man who sacrifices everything to be along with his family but that ultimately fails to avoid falling into Ross's trap, and Arthur is a good man hidden under bad past choices, who must choose if he takes revenge and money over good will and redemption. The tjree of them are great in their own ways but Arthur is something else

Oh my Gosh same, keep the story the same and have him live at the end so you can be able to play the game afterwards. Open world, clothes customization, weapon customization, add side quests, and so on. Just have it in the same gameplay and engine as RDR2, it would be perfect.

Thing is about red dead revolver is that it is canon. But the events we take part in is like a story being told. That’s why so many things are so fantastical. Reason is because every red dead game mentions red Harlow and the events that took place in the game. But they mention him as if he’s a legend. So his story being told in the game is a dramatized version of actual events that happened
He's definitely Cannon. For example do you hear Claude, Tommy, or CJ mentioned in Gta IV or V? No because that's a different universe. But in the Case of Red Dead they literally name drop Red Harlow more than once. He's definitely cannon.

PS: According to the developers and writers themselves, the "3D era" and the "HD era" of GTA exist in completely separate universes. Claude, Tommy Vercetti, and Carl Johnson do not exist in the world of GTA 4 and 5. They never existed in that world, according to the Houser brothers and others within Rockstar Games.
Red Harlow, certified badass. Shame we don't hear more about him in the later Red Dead Games, he'd be a force to be reckoned with no doubt.

Looking at the lore, Arthur is the real deal and a tough SOB, John is very capable but mostly gotta be pushed into things, and can struggle with things Arthur would have done easier (like capturing Bill Williamson) and John can be a little dumb. Red is a killer, no rest needed no gang or posse wanted, Red is up there with Landon Ricketts a legend of the old west, the real deal.
Recency bias. By RDR1, John has surpassed Arthur in almost every way except for physical strength. And they’ve both made dumb mistakes.

The gang fell apart, whatever morally righteous ideals they used to carry were nothing but excuses to make themselves feel better. Dutch going AWOL was the final nail in the coffin. The only thing John had left to fight for was his family. That’s it.
Oh and for Arthur’s mistakes? Hmmm idk maybe catching TB like an idiot from a very obviously sick man? Going along with Dutch’s lies and manipulative behaviour to the point that it bit him in the ass with Dutch leaving him for dead at the oil refinery? Trusting Micah wayyy too much? Not paying attention to everything Hosea had to say about the present state of the gang and its future? The list goes on.
Listen. I like Arthur AND John but I’m also not afraid to acknowledge the truth about them either. The fact of the matter is that they both made mistakes, they both are just as good as each other at gunslinging and are vulnerable when the plot demands it. Like, Arthur was never untouchable, he literally got captured by the O’driscolls due to his own negligence of his surroundings, BEFORE any of the TB had an effect on him. Quit fanboying.

Arthur’s not a doctor he didn’t know how you catch TB or what TB sounds like, that doesn’t make it a mistake, he did that just like everything else for the love of the gang. And he never trusted Micah, he wanted to leave him swing in strawberry but Dutch ordered him to go. Arthur agreed with Hosea on everything, when didn’t he listen to him? But Dutch was the boss even Hosea new that and went along with things. While John was an idiot for going back, he went North that’s established but came back to a place he KNEW he was a wanted man and bought property under his real name, you think Arthur would have done that with all his years of experience on the run? No, he wouldn’t have. And I guarantee you he wouldn’t have rocked up to Bill Williamsons’ door and just stood there and got shot like an idiot, he’d have watched waited and when the time was right struck when Bill didn’t stand a chance, similar to Dutch Arthur and Sadie in Saint Denis with Colm hanging he’d have actually planned it out. He’s definitely a better hand to hand fighter, shooting is about equal but assessing a situation, planning and toughness you gotta give it to Arthur. As far as the Arthur being captured, again that was somebody else’s mistake and what did he do huh? He kicked their asses and escaped. He didn’t need Bonnie McFarlane to drag him away after he was left for dead by the idiot Bill Williamson.

My headcanon is that in that time Red was a mythological figure much like Paul Bunyan, but the game itself is the storyline of the book "Red Dead" written later by Jack Marston, which we see on bookshelves in GTA V.

Those dime novels you get in Red Dead 2 would have been the perfect way to continue Red's story while maintaining their own Redemption continuity.
No they separated their worlds. They did the same with GTA. That's why Tommy Versetti is never mentioned.

I grew up playing Red Dead Revolver with my Dad and brother in the early 2000s. So enjoyable to see this video
I remember playing this as a kid and mistaken it for gun when I got closer to my teens, the coffin dude gave me nightmares which turned out to be some cool DLC dream involving a witch doctor avoiding potions, that's how unique the bosses were in game

I was lucky enough to interview Randall Jahnson, the writer for the 2005 Neversoft game GUN, and he told me some really interesting things about the games development along with the potential sequel that was in early development. I wanna give this info out to someone who can use it.

Red Dead Redemption was meant to be a direct sequel to Revolver. You can tell due to John having a similar appearance to Red Harlow. I guess Rockstar wanted to start fresh.
That HD Red Harlow model looks amazing, I wish Red Dead Revolver got a remaster or even a free roam open World Remake.
PS4/Xbox got HD upscales of the PS2/Xbox era.
I'm replaying Revolver for a second time via PS4 and I love that HD Remaster of the PS2 it looks great to me.

You can see a lot of similarities between Red Harlow and John, such as scars, outfit color pallet, hat and overall outfit design
I believe John is just the updated hd version of him so that's why they can't make red dead revolver cannon,Rockstar thought everyone forgot about the game and that it was just the ps2 era when they were making RDR with John Marston.But a reebot of Red Dead Revolver could fix this if they ever decide to do one,so he can be considered cannon too and maybe make him the main protagonist of the next RDR game

Red Harlow is the original John, they just remade him when the story was essentially overhauled into a more polish game/story line in the first red dead. But the overhauled makes them very different characters at the same time, different story, different name, different origin, different personality but almost the same design.
What made Red different, he wasn't an outlaw, that's what made him different
Him killing Governor Griffon makes him an outlaw. That's why the sheriff offers the $5k as a makeshift bounty for them with the sole purpose of funding Red's escape.

Since John Marston was an orphan, I believe his father could have been Red Harlow. They do look alike. Marston's dad was killed in a bar fight, and Red caused a few bar fights in his time. It's possible.
It couldn't have been, his father was Scottish. Red is half white American half American Indian.
Also John's mother was a prostitute, meaning that John's father paid John's mother to have sex with him and she got pregnant. I bring this up because it would seem out of character for Red to go about having sex with prostitutes, he wasn't like that so it makes no sense for his character to do that.

i think its more likely that red harlow (a story that i believe was written by jack) is based on john marston, same scars for the most part, and its not like jack knew the ins and outs of what his dad was doing, but he did probably know about his bounty hunting in rdr1, i think that jack made the story, and since its a story he needed to add alot more intense things that were not realistic (like the one bad guy who blew himself up with tnt over and over again) and its not hard to imagine that jack didnt want to tell the part where his dad was murdered, so red harlow just walks away and says it wasnt for the money. then theres the question about johns parents, we know his dad was scottish, which could be red dad, but the mother was never confirmed, meaning if johns mother was native, theres a very good chance imo that john marston is the cannon version of red harlow.
The only reason why i played Red Dead Redemption because i thought its was a sequel to this game. Such an awesome game

Sure Uncle being Red Harlow is a theory, but a lot of the evidence is not vague in the slightest. But things that contradict it is some of his other stories like HIS uncle, and the fishing story that talks about his "kid-brother", and the story about him forced to marry someone, as well as his deep phycological takes in Shady Belle around the campfire.
All the evidence is extremely vague.

I remember buying this for my Dad for his birthday, he almost 100% the game it was one of his favorites at the time cause he liked how it was kinda like a Clint Eastwood game. He also did the same to GTA V, MGS4-5 and all 3 Dark souls.
Red Harlow is Uncle. He gives that away with his "One Shot Kid" reference in the second act of Redemption II. What we do know about Uncle is that he was born in the late 1840's and died in the second decade of the 20th century, which would put him in his early 60s at that time. He suffers from lumbago which is an extremely painful degenerative condition of the lower spine, somewhat common in the 19th century, which indicates that he spent much of his earlier life in the saddle and also partially explains his alcoholism. Given that Red seems to have used a pistol that utilized cartridge ammunition, the events of Revolver would have taken place sometime between 1873 and the early 1880's, meaning that he would have been in his mid 20's to mid 30's at the time of those events. I think that Red really did exist in the Redemption universe because his legend is so persistent. However, like all of the other famous gunslingers in Redemption, his story has been embellished considerably. The theme of the famous gunslinger series of missions is that their legends became so powerful that the truth was pushed aside, and left all of them to live with and attempt to cope with the outsized stories that were told about them. Each of the famous gunslingers developed a different strategy for doing so. One became invested in his legend and tried to cash in, one simply became a paranoid, alcoholic wreck, another cooperated with the authorities and ended up as a forgotten pig farmer who still longed for the fame he thought was rightfully his, and yet another attempted to protect himself from his fame by surrounding himself with a criminal gang. The healthiest of them was Belle, who simply chose to continue to be who she always was, and who arguably paid the heaviest price for her fame. Harlow coped by disappearing and assuming an entirely new identity, that identity eventually becoming the enigmatic, nameless "Uncle". What Revolver presents is Red's highly embellished legend, making that story highly suspect as history or canon, while the truth is far more likely to be that Red was a small time bounty hunter who bushwacked a railroad executive over the murders of his parents and then made himself disappear. Uncle has lumbago because his subsequent life forced him into the existence of a saddle tramp and itinerant cow puncher before he fell in with Dutch's gang.

When i was 9 or 10 years old, I played the hell out of this game. Completed it multiple times, got every cheat. But I never finished to get all the multiplayer characters.. and they were many

@C L S Uncle is missing Red’s prominent over the nose scar, and the only way for a beard to hide scars is if it’s a tiny one. Red’s scars are too big to be able to be covered up by facial hair, because like I said before, beards dont grow on scar tissue. It’s why Arthur’s chin is missing a patch of facial hair when you let his beard grow out a bit, same thing with John.

Gun for ps2 done by activision was an absolute beast in terms of gaming back like 2004/05 , i see many similiar traits between Colton White the protagonist and Red Harlow ,Gun is really underated its story,character development and storyline is just a classic, would have been sweet if they did a remake.
not to mention it was the first western open world from what i remember, red dead revolver was very linear, gun is very under-appreciated

Considering that red dead is the franchise series, revolver is most likely in the same universe, just the timelines don’t overlap so it wasn’t necessary for redemption to cover it

If you look closely on Uncles face in rdr you can see a scar on his face above his beard, in the same place Red has one but Uncles beard covers up the rest of the scar

One of my favorite content creators Legends and Killers made a video awhile back paying homage to Red Harlow. I think the outfit he created is pretty damn close to the one Red sports in Revolver!

Everyone wanting to believe Red is Uncle, Fuck No. Red Harlow is around Arthur’s age In Rdr2 time period. Uncle is 50 in the main story of rdr2 not 36 like around the age red would be. God this theory is so stupid and holds no weight. The only thing people always say is cause uncle said he was known as the one shot kid. Which Red Harlow was never known as. Plus the fact Red Harlow is a badass silent type gunslinger while uncle is a lazy old loudmouth drunk. I want Red Harlow back in a red dead game so bad but I wouldn’t want his legacy to be tarnished for him to be uncle which makes no sense anyway. Red has scars embedded into his skin and nose and a scorpion burned into his palm. Uncle has none of these. Scars can fade but not disappear entirely. Look at John in the epilogue his scars are faded a bit but still very present and a beard can’t fully cover scars. And the people that want to say”oh his scars could have been embellished and blah blah.” You’re literally taking everything that makes Red Harlow who he is away from his character. Why? And this is coming from someone who used to believe it until I got embedded in red dead lore and played red dead revolver. People just need to accept the fact that uncle being red makes absolutely zero sense. I’m just trying to show people how stupid this theory is especially since a lot of the red dead community wants to believe it. And he’s one of my favorite characters ever made and it upsets me that so many goddamn people want to believe such a nonsensical theory that makes no sense at all and people just want take everything that makes Red Harlow who he is just so they can say red is in all 3 games. Ughhh.

For those wondering why Red said to give the $5000 bounty to Annie and Buffalo Soldier, saying "It never was about the money." after being upset about the late gold payment...
Red's father owned the Bear Valley gold mine with his partner, and had two revolvers custom made (the most powerful revolvers), one belonged to him and another to his partner, Griffin.
Red's father's revolver was destroyed by the fire after Red shot it last. The only remaining one was with the now Governor Griffin.
The reason "it never was about the money" was because Red wanted his "father's" revolver. Which is why we see Red picking up the revolver at 5:26 after killing Griffin.
I always thought of Red as Naked Snake Aka Big Boss's great grandfather in account of how he had to go up against a Metal Gear type train/tank
I’d like to think that after the events of red dead revolver he went off by himself to do some self reflecting then eventually coming back and settling down with Annie Stoakes and is just living a low key ranch live with Annie during red dead redemption 1 and 2
I hope the next Red Dead game (Which they're making now) is to be called Red Dead Revolver 2, and tells the story about how Red got on after the events of the first one, and maybe tie in all the games, and maybe even confirm that Red is in fact Uncle.

@@pepperVenge yes it is impossible. Revolver takes place in the 1880s and red is in his 20s during the game. And red is around Arthur’s age In Rdr2 time period. Uncle is 50 in the main story of rdr2 not 36 like around the age red would be. This theory holds no weight. The only thing people always say is cause uncle said he was known as the one shot kid. Which Red Harlow was never known as. Plus the fact Red Harlow is a badass silent type gunslinger while uncle is a lazy old loudmouth drunk. I want Red Harlow back in a red dead game so bad but I wouldn’t want his legacy to be tarnished for him to be uncle which makes no sense anyway. Red has scars embedded into his skin and nose and a scorpion burned into his palm. Uncle has none of these. Scars can fade but not disappear entirely. Look at John in the epilogue his scars are faded a bit but still very present and a beard can’t fully cover scars. And the people that want to say”oh his scars could have been embellished and blah blah.” You’re literally taking everything that makes Red Harlow who he is away from his character. Why? Just so people can tie all games together? I will never understand this theory. To be fair about the Uncle theory, he has a beard covering alot of his cheeks and jawline so, he may actually have the scars, we just can't see them.

One thing I've never seen discussed when it comes to possible RDR3 storylines is the possibility of bringing back Red Harlow. I think RDR3 should be about tying him to the Redemption series somehow. It would be a perfect end to the franchise.
Red Harlow, Arthur Morgan, and John Marston aka the Red Dead Trio are great Antiheroes of the Series.
I wish they make a remake of this game. Plus Gun as well these are only two Western Games I’ll really want to play it on a modern console. Not only me but to newer players as well. It’s amazing that this game alone brought a spiritual successor of this game.
