Wayne Shorter is a titan, known for many things -- his compositions, his solos, his role in Miles Davis' second quintet, his role in Weather Report, his solo work, his large and small group arrangements -- a musical renaissance man if you will. This tune is off his solo record "JuJu," recorded in 1965 with the swinging rhythm section comprised of Reggie Workman, Elvin Jones, and McCoy Tyner. An up-tempo tune, the influence of the great composers of the past such as Billy Strayhorn, Thelonious Monk, and George Gershwin is evident, where Wayne is bridging the gap between functional and non-functional harmony, accentuated by his hip, hard-bop solo that is uniquely him. In the 1987 release "Random Abstract" by Branford Marsalis with an equally smoking rhythm section of Kenny Kirkland, Lewis Nash, and Delbert Felix, Branford brings a fire not seen on the tune since Wayne recorded it back in the 60s. Here, we took inspiration from both of the versions, we hope you enjoy!
On our channel, we like to share the amazing music that we call jazz. We like to share our playing jazz standards, modern jazz, funk, R&B, and original compositions.
