The accent thing is called code switching, where you change your accent/dialect to match the situation you're in 😊 fab video, as someone else from the black country hoping to go to Oxford, I do worry about my accent
Totally relate about the relationship situation - i’m 21 never had a proper relationship, been on dates with people I know I should find attractive but just didn’t have the spark. I think putting pressure on yourself is the worst thing, we are so young, Mr Right will come one day!
I do it too! my accent is so geordie when I'm in and near Newcastle but the second I step out of Newcastle it becomes SO different and people always think I'm faking and I'm like I'm not doing it intentionally I promise! Xx
Yh. And being a Dutch born (West African by ethnicity) Londoner who's lived in West Yorkshire for five years of his life I do wonder what my true accent is. But I find a whole lot of British accents very interesting, and I wish I can switch smoothly, but that's life. Not trying to sound dumb or anything but that's me.
loving your chatty videos recently... i'm due to go on my year abroad next year (fellow languages student!) and i have LOTS of anxiety surrounding it, so your videos are a really nice insight! hope you're keeping well!
Also from midlands and my accent changes ALL the time honestly your response was so relatable. And with regards to the guy that hurt you, try not to feel like a mug - everyone is young and naive to start with, positive side is you’ve grown from it and know how to spot the red flag in future ✨
I understand the accent thing. I was born in Ireland and moved to Birmingham when I was 12 so picked up the Brummy accent a bit so my accent can switch without me noticing. When I go back to Ireland my family there say I have lost my Irish accent but when I'm back in Brum people say I sound Irish. By the way don't change for anyone, you are a beautiful person and still young, you will find someone when not looking :) take care.
It's so refreshing to hear eve talk about not being in a relationship; with the media shoving the idea down our throats that basically everyone is in relationship and had to be in order to be happy it's sometimes difficult to feel validated when you're single, but this just really reminds me that even the best of people don't always have someone and it's perfectly okay :)
Such a mood with the sister relationship! Me and my older sister were known in our neighbourhood as not getting along but once she moved out and our lives weren't intertwined anymore it just became so much easier! Now I've also moved out and moved far, we have to make an effort to keep in touch with each other and it's just nicer. I think when you move away from your hometown and meet so many different people, it makes it special to talk to someone who's known you as long and as intimately as your sister does.
So glad you explained the relationship with your sister! Me and my sister are both 5 years apart, the same ages now as you two and we have the same relationship as you. It’s definitely got better now I’m away at uni but still argue when I go home. I feel like no one on RUclips ever talks about their relationship with their sister like that and it’s nice to know I’m not the only one!
You still sound birmingham-ish to me, and i’m scottish, i think accents can go both ways people criticise if your accent isn’t strong enough and you don’t “sound like how you should” and obviously there’s prejudice against strong regional accents/dialects. I think people should be more open-minded when it comes to accents like why do you get to decide how everyone’s voice should sound ??!
Eve - first year of uni you think you're independent and don't need your family Me in my first year of uni - my mum is the main person I talk to and she still gets pictures of my dinner every day and it's been 3 months since I moved in😂
I totally do the accent thing too, as someone with a Birmingham accent, living in Scotland, I definitely put on a more Scottish accent with Scottish people and when I'm at home I sound more English but it's definitely not as strong anymore. Loved the video Eve
The accent thing is so relatable! I’m from the North East, but I moved to Edinburgh for postgrad and all of my flatmates were international. They had never heard an accent like mine before and I found myself having to tone it down so they could understand me. I definitely got a bit self-conscious about it, but then my home friends came to visit and they realised my accent isn’t even that strong in comparison. The struggle was real. 😂🙈
Oh my god I completely get the accent thing. I have a strong Yorkshire accent and went to uni in Kent so I constantly got the piss taken out of my all the timeee
I've been getting accent anxiety since moving to uni (I'm now in my second year). I'm from Cornwall and I always wish I had a stronger accent because I don't look like a 'typical' Cornish person (not 'white enough' basically), but I'm extremely proud to be Cornish and wish people could see that 😂
I’m from Yorkshire and have a very strong regional accent, and went to Uni in the North East so was still surrounded by strong northern accents. But I spent a long weekend with my best friend from home at her Uni in Windsor and spent the whole weekend having to constantly repeat myself because no one understood me or how I could be from the same place as my friend 😂😂😂 (she’d obviously codeswitched to a more ‘neutral’ accent but if anything I’d made my accent stronger in a defensive way?!)
It’s difficult to get away from being constantly apologetic. I do it all the time and my ex girlfriend mentioned it quite often which was really bad. I get how you feel in that way.
Literally the first question tho ! I really hate the whole cancel culture and how much people don’t allow people to explain or make a mistake . Like with the Instagram story thing , you shouldn’t have had to justify yourself , like you go to Oxford, you clearly are clever enough to know what the rules are and know what your doing is ok . Don’t worry Eve ❤️
I’m the exact same with my brother. He’s five years younger so he never got my jokes or understood that I was incredibly stressed about GCSEs, A Levels, and Uni. Now I’m final year and he’s doing GCSEs and we can joke around a bit and he understands the stress because he’s older. We used to just argue all the time and now we snap at each other because we’re used to it but we also joke alongside it. When he’s in his 20s and has a job etc. Im sure we’ll be great friends :))
Also, same with the accent! I lost my brighton accent at university because it’s similar to a south London accent and is considered working class and unintelligent. Can’t even do it on command anymore so I just have a very RP accent the whole time
please do more of these!! or evening in with eve and gin- these are my favourite vids you do and i have more topics i’d love to hear you talk about that i keep forgetting to tell you aha x
god i FEEL you on the accent thing!! i’m from leeds but i go to a sixth form in a much nicer area of the city where hardly anyone even has the accent so i get weird looks, but then my parents point it out when they think i don’t sound northern *enough*? i’m so scared that when i go to uni im gonna lose it completely or get the piss taken out of me / have people assume i’m stupid because of it :(
Absolutely feel you on the accent. I moved from Buckinghamshire to Hull when I was 16, and swap back and forth aaaaall the time. Some people think I'm putting on the Hull accent and it drives me MAD. I've lived here six and a half years, leave me be!
I get you with the accent thing, I’m from south London but go to uni in Nottingham, none of my friends are from London but I find that when I speak to a fellow Londoner or get drunk my south London really comes out as opposed to speaking with a general southern accent
Couldn't agree more with what you said about Birmingham accents being considered to be less intelligent. Absolutely hate how the Birmingham tinge to my accent makes other people think less of me - ridiculous!
I relate so much to you talking about your accent (Wolverhampton girl). Don't get me wrong I still have a black country accent regardless but the difference in me talking to my Mum, as we're from a very common part of wolverhampton, and me talking to my friends from Perton and South Staffs is definitely different. I feel like it's such a common thing for people with a black country accent
The accent thing is my life!!! I grew up half in Australia and half in Lancashire and those accents are polar opposite but it changes immediately depending on who I’m talking to. There is no winning.
love this video eve! i've been watching u so long but don't think i've ever commented on a video hahah, i remember when u had 9k subscribers! love seeing u grow as a person ❤️
I have the accent thing as well and its literally all the same issues bc I'm a Brummie but my moms side of the family are all southern and have RP accents but my dads side is suuuuper Brummie so my accents always been a bit confused but now I go to uni in Sheffield its got a northern twang as well and people are so confused by it 😂 am all over the place
I’m from a pretty poor place in the north west with a v strong accent but I haven’t lived there since I was 18 (many many many moons ago) I currently live aboard and sometimes my accent will pop back if I hear someone else with it or something but nobody can ever tell where I’m from and my accent is just neutral. It’s not that I hated the NW accent or anything it just happened on it’s own. Totally get what you’re talking about
I'm Hull born and bred but I've never had a strong Hull accent. My boyfriend thought I was from Nottingham or somewhere posh when he met me. I pick up accents really easily.
I totally agree with the 'camera voice' and telephone voice thing haha, sometimes my accent sounds posher and sometimes sounds very Manc! Your accent is nice either way 😊 loved this video!
Thank you for being a young person who has survived covid and explained the affects it can have. I an annoyed at 20 to 30 year olds who are so naive to the pandemic
Me and my sister used to argue a lot 5 years gap me and my brother not so much 8 years gap. I’m the same I find dating hard I’ve never been on a date and sometimes I feel like I like this person but I’m not sure if it’s just friendship or if I’d want it to go further
It's strange hearing you talk about accent. My partner is currently sat next to me and listening to you aswell and he just mentioned that u do it the same. I'm hard of hearing so I cannot tell if I am doing it or not. My partner says that my 'original accent' (North Yorkshire, Harrogate where I was born and raised for 20 years) has completely changed when I moved to East Riding / East Yorkshire (Hull/Beverley). I sound more Hull than my 'Harrogate' when I'm living in Hull, but when I go back home for Christmas etc, it switches back. Its quite weird hearing you talk about it!
the rule that over 18s cant see both parents is so stupid... i get trying to prevent the spread but if the over 18 (like in your case) has a sibling whos travelling between the two households you're still in that bubble either way :/ honestly, i follow all of boris' rules but some of them just don't make sense

I think the disclaimer thing can be seen as a self esteem based habit. You don’t have to justify things so much just for others who criticise you.
