I've had a feeling of something in my throat for 20 years. No amount of coughing, wheezing etc makes it go away. ENTs have been no help. Laryngoscope looking at vocal cords multiple times, acid reflux meds, and diet changes have done nothing. Your channel has given me hope that some relief is possible. I'll have to schedule an appointment with you all.
Dr. Bastian, thank you so much! I got R-CPD surgery yesterday. Today I’m burping and not suffering anymore. My Japanese doctor says it’ll take a few months. But we both want to say that we appreciate your research. 24 hours and I’m doing better after 85 parts of Botox.
It’s really good to see that he updated this , when I tell you I studied everything he talked about in his first few videos pertaining to sensory neuropathic coughs. I had chronic cough that lasted for over 20 years of my life until Covid came And I couldn’t tell people it was just allergies lol.. without them looking at me sideways ..I went to multiple doctors, took multiple medications, nasal sprays, allergy shots, acid reflux medicines test on my esophagus until I realize it could be the foods I’m eating on top of what this Doc was telling me on RUclips given it a name and no doctor here in Maryland could ever tell me what was wrong with me.. this is a sidebar, I stopped eating chicken because of the mucus that i was accumulating and inflammation with that gabapentin and allergy medicine. I think I’m healed now thanks to this Doctor and a lot of prayer.🙏🏾
I am a life long chronic cougher it has really reduced my quality of life. I’ve been quite an achiever in some areas but my performance has always been hampered by the damn cough. Interestingly I also have Arnold’s ear phenomena which triggers massive coughing episode if my right ear side wall is mildly stimulated
I've had this for at least 8 years before I had a diagnosis of Neurogenic Coughing. I was prescribed Gabapentin, and Benzonatate. My coughing is 24 hrs a day. My caughing is violent, so much so that sometimes I feel like I'm going to pass out. Everything bothers my throat. It's become debilitating. I can't even carry on a normal conversation with out caughing. To be fair I'm supposed to take my medicine 3 times a day. I was only taking it in the morning before going to work. I'm retired now, last month, so I'm trying to take the medicine as directed now.( Note) I have never been a smoker. My parents both smoked. I used to gag when traveling in the back seat of the car as a kid.
So sorry to hear this! Keep in mind that not every medication works for every person with SNC. Sometimes people have to work their way down a list... but of course, medcations work best if taken per instructions... Al the best.
Hello Dr.Bastian, you have just made an incredibly informative and helpful video. I have to ask, does injecting the long acting steroid cause any side effects? If so, what are the most prevalent side effects? I am a 34 year old male, and I haven’t encountered many people my age with this medical problem. This was caused by the Corona virus that I had. All the best!
Sorry to hear...We had an upsurge of patients with SNC after Covid... We try to inject at 3 to 4 week intervals x3 and then stretch to two months (if needed). None of our very large caseload has had any complications.
Doctor i have been taking gabapentin 300 1 tablet in night for past 15 days and my throat itching and cough has reduced by 80% please advise how many days I need to continue taking this tablet or should I increase from 300mg.Thank you🙏
Of course I can't give medical advice in this context, so take this comment to your personal physician. But in the theoretical case, we aim for 300mg QID (4x a day). There is the rare person for whom 100 mg QID is enough, however. If the cough has been very longterm (as in, years...) then sometimes the medication is needed indefinitely. If cough is controlled very well for a month, some try to taper slowly to see if the cough comes back. Check with your doctor or if all else fails, consider a Zoom call with Dr. Bastian.
The best we can do is to offer a Zoom conversation to help you build a strategy to work more effectively with your personal physician. That's because Dr. Bastian's license is in Illinois, not New York. But you can come to Bastian Voice Institute, and then you are an official "Illinois" patient even though you return to New York. And of course, our information is intended to help you work more effectively with your New York physician...
Do you have a video for someone with an offputing voice? I don't have a weak voice but the timbre tonality or whatever you want to call it is not pleasant to the ear. Somewhat nassaly etc
Interesting. I am surprised that Venlafaxine is on the list. I'm on my second bout of chronic cough (8 months long but went away after 3 months on meds) and two years later it has returned and am again on Amitriptyline and Gabapentin. I just so happen to also be on Venlafaxine since April. I've almost been on them for three months this time and I seem to be getting worse. I just upped my Amitriptyline from 10 mg to 20 and am using several breathing techniques to stop the cough (with about 50% success rate) I learned the first time in speech therapy. I'm hoping I'll be finished with it soon but we'll see. I had wondered if being on Venlafaxine was making it worse but evidently from this video it may help get over it. Thanks for the video and the research.

We’d be honored to try to help at Bastian Voice Institute.

Aren't you kind, and all the best and I'm hoping for permanent relief from a "one and done" injection!!

I’m extremely happy to hear this report!
Outstanding video !
Thank you so much!
Could it be pertussis or whooping cough?...

Hi Doc! How can I get some of that Capsaicin Spray shipped to my house (NYC)?
Also how can I get treated by you guys? Thank you.

@ awesome! What about the spray?
Do you have a video for someone with an offputing voice? I don't have a weak voice but the timbre tonality or whatever you want to call it is not pleasant to the ear. Somewhat nassaly etc
That would be work for a speech pathologist, especially someone who is good at accents or a voice coach for theatre
Doc, how can I get the spray?

My dr. calls this hypersensitive cough syndrome. Is that an accurate diagnosis?
Edit: it’s controlled with lyrica
That could be a different name for sensory neuropathic cough since Lyrica is helping...
They can't prescribe you like Dr Robert Bastian
😂😂😂
I messed up in career progress because of this cough... It lasted many years
So sorry, and all the best for finding a physician who can help you! Someone who understands SNC
@Laryngopedia thanks

All the best to you. No medication on our list of about 8 or 9 works for everyone. That is why we need options.
