2 days ago I told my mom that I would play the sax and man the next day my dad gave me a saxophone that was in his shed. Your videos are helping me a lot really appreciate it! I was wondering how to make sound till I found your channel, thanks a lot!

Softer reeds help, but there’s not really a great way to mute a saxophone without spending a lot of money.
If you have a lot of money, then the E-Sax sound case is about $600.
There is also a new item hitting the market called the EMEO Digital Saxophone which is supposed to be pretty good for practicing key presses . But it doesn’t help with your embouchure at all.
EMEO is around $1200-$1500, but it’s super cool if you have the money.
I have been practicing and playing for 3+ years and always wondered, how the hell do professionals get that sound. I thought I had a sqeaky saxophone, guess what it was the way I was blowing. You know this guy is right and I actually took the time from my practice session to comment on the video. The sound is magical after you follow what he is teaching, trust me
A happy student :)
Thank you so much for your long and generous comment Sheldon. Much appreciated. Glad the info is really helping you get a better tone. We like happy students! Thanks for watching and let me know if there's anything else I can do for you. "This guy" aka Jamie :-)
@@GetYourSaxTogether Hey I am an amateur and still learning something new everyday I would like you to put up a video related to jazz or pentatonic scales. Something of that sort.
And I know nothing comes for free, I'd love to donate to you soon.
Just a tip, blow REALLY hard as if you’re screaming at a sibling or you’re the wolf trying to blow down the houses in the story. This helped me a lot because I was playing as if I was blowing out a candle.
(I’m still very new to the saxophone so if you have any advice please reply)
That's actually really good advice!
Great tip !! I feel as though I was always blowing softly like trying not to annoy the neighborhood 🤣🤣 but when I take my sax to the beach I let rip.
Yeah I was like I already do all the tips this helped a lot thanks
I always involuntary do this to keep the volume low
I am a pre-beginner. I've heard it's helpful to pretend you are saying Ahhh". It helps to open your throat. At my age, I'm a already blowing hard to blow put a birthday cake.
I bought a tenor sax some years back because I LOVED the jazz sound it produces. I could not even blow a sound at first except a squeak. Some friends told me I sounded like a sick goose. I watched a lot of youtube instruction, and I practiced EVERY day for a minimum of an hour. For sure I learned to play, but I still cannot read a lick of music. I play fairly well by ear though!! By the way, I am 67!!! I haven't played for a few years, so went today and bought a good used alto (VITO) from a kid who hated it and failed band because he could not learn. Came across this channel and subscribed!!! All my learning is coming back and I am improving by watching your videos. Thanks!!! Hang in there, you all...if this old man can do it, you younger folks surely can!!!
Great story! And by the way, you’re a slip of a lad compared to some folks on this channel! 👍🏻
I stopped playing 21 years ago just out of school after the death of my grandfather who was my biggest supporter... He even had bought my saxophone for me... Just recently I lost my last parent and found myself relearning... These videos have been lots of help relearning and reexercising
Wow, thanks for the share. Good luck with it all. I hope you enjoy it! J:-)
Just found your videos - love how you explain everything (and also it has Tank and squirrels in!). I have wanted to play since my late teens and now have finally treated myself to an alto (a good few decades later). I am attempting to learn purely via lessons on RUclips and am just trying to get my embouchure right - this video really helps explain it. Am glad I’ve found you!
MrsFunshine - that’s fantastic. That’s what I’m hear for! Glad you’re enjoying the channel. I kinda ran out of movie clips and squirrels after the first few as it was so much work every week, but there’s loads of stuff on the channel for you to check out. Lol Enjoy!

You have no idea how glad I am to have discovered your video series! I studied years ago with the first teacher of Kenny G, Jeff cashua and others. He taught us what you are teaching llama teeth resting on top, lips gripping the mouthpiece and Reed equally all around, and not curling your lip over your teeth! The other essential item was learning to blow the air properly. And yes, beginners should absolutely start on a one and a half. You are so spot-on!
Any time!
As an old fella with plenty of time on my hands I thought,Im gonna learn sax, having played clarinet 50+ years ago at school I thought how hard can it be,the answer is bloody hard when your no longer young,I had looked at other online free lessons but Im so glad I found this group. You explain clearly and Im actually making progress. Thanks GYST
Awesome! Keep at it!
While in graduate school in New South Wales, my wife bought me an Ice Black Cannonball Tenor Saxophone. I opened that case and was intimidated. She bought it for me in 2013 and I’ve never even played it once. So today I decided to take it out of its linen wraps and put it together. Then looked and found your videos. I feel comfortable trying to learn from you. Hope you don’t mind a student reaching out with questions. I want to learn this thing! Thank you from Minnesota!
Great story! Thanks for commenting. Yeh, you can ask me anything you want, of course. Thanks for watching and let me know if there's anything else I can do for you. J😊
@@GetYourSaxTogether Thanks Boss! So I heard what the sax sounded like for the first time yesterday. My wife who plays just about any instrument she can lay her hands on, came down and said I was actually blowing nicely! Then I showed her your video. Thank you man!
The Engineer - Anytime! 👍🏻
Just found your videos Jamie and have subscribed I started learning about 23 years ago but havent picked my sax up for about 21 years I always used to have bite marks in my bottom lip as it was never explained how to form the embouchure, Now I know thanks you so much once it heals I can start all over again.
Welcome! So glad you've the channel and it's helpful to you. I love to hear of people picking up their sax again after many years! Keep at it!
thank you so much for doing this vid! ive been playing alto for 4 months now and couldn't figure out why i still sounded like i had been playing for 2 weeks... until i watched this and my eyes were OPENED! thanks so much :)
Glad it helped!

Thanks Scott. Glad it helped.
Extremely fantastic video! I’ve been biting for years and years. I good friend told me my bottom lip should be relaxed and sides tight. This is the only video I’ve seen that properly explained this 😉🙌🏽 thanks so much!

Glad to hear it!
Omg I’ve been told
For so many years to curl bottom lip over teeth!!! And my sound been bad like you shown!! Can’t wait to try your way
Boom!
Thanks man! I've been playing the sax for a few years but shortly after I switched to the tenor I realized that I was actually biting into my lower lip. This obviously lead to my lip feeling quite sore after practice.
I went online and checked a few videos on saxophone embouchure and I have to say that your video probably had the most useful tips to change the way I play. Now it's just a matter of practice in order to "unlearn" the way I played before. Once again, thank you!
Valdemar L - brilliant! Glad it was a help. That’s what I’m here for! 👍🏻

Awesome! Anytime man.
Great tutorial. Just started playing tenor to compliment my clarinet which I am fairly accomplished; bottom lip folds over teeth on clarinet which is different for sax

This video was super helpful! When you were talking about keeping your throat open (which I wasn’t doing) it reminded me of how my chorus teacher says to pretend there is a bee in the back of your mouth and if you don’t give it enough space it’ll sting you

Am now 38. I played piano from a young age until i was almost 18 with lessons from the age of around 8, started with a small keyboard at 3-4 yrs old and went from there. Eventually studied my way to ABRSM grade 5. Then life got in the way. A year or so ago i got it tuned and am getting back into it again, so much is flooding back so quickly.
Yesterday to add to my journey, i took delivery of an Alto i bought from Gear4music.
Was having a try after work last night and lets just say is going to take a while to get used to what I'm doing (is the first woodwind ive ever tried lol) mostly my embouchure is going to take a while to develop. Im going to have to get some lighter reeds, only have a 2.5 that came along in the packaging atm, and lets say im a bit like a squeaky goose atm 😂😂
Good luck!
You re making a wonderfull Job. Regards from Brazil.

Firstly its been fun learning off you videos , i am 73 years old and only have started learning the saxophone about two months, i traced down dads saxophone which he passed over 20 years ago, the saxophone need major over haul, so i hired one not sure if i could learn it, any way we had a family band in the day, when dad was learning the saxophone the noise got to much for mum , so she threw it in the bush, funny thing i never forgot that, so i practice in the bush, hey man stay safe , regards mac

Amazing. All the other resources I found (including one I paid for) talk about placing your bottom lip over your teeth as a cushion. I found two problems with this - a) It doesn't work and b) my bottom lip is too painful to continue. I had to let it recover for a few days...So it was really refreshing to find your video on youtube AND it worked perfectly for me. :) :) Thanks so much for creating and posting.

I just picked up the alto saxophone and been watching your videos. I appreciate all the information your videos provide. My mine focus has been praying my embouchure with just the mouthpiece and neck. Another instructor recommended downloading a tuner that reads what note your on. It says G or G# is there a certain note you should practice on while or acting your embouchure? I also been trying to keep the line steady.
Don’t worry about that too much at this point. Just aim for that big loose sound!

Completely new to the saxophone. My wife brought me a jsax to practice on to see if I like it. Already, this lesson has changed the sound I can make, so massive thanks! Have a feeling I’ll be investing in some proper kit…any recommendations?
Ooh…big question. The Jean Paul is a good starter sax and you can’t go wrong with a Yamaha 4C mouthpiece to begin on.
My alto sax is brand new and I can tell there are tiny foam cushions to remove from between the keys. But do I also have to unglue the soft red mini cloths sticking out of some areas.?
I don’t think so, no. Not if it’s glued! 😬
Great video, I was a classical saxophonist (selmer c* mouthpiece) I bought the jumpo java to be more pop rock but still my sound is classic, can I fix that???
