      @@BigRingStumpy You said “tire and wheel” which means the same thing as “tire and rim.” But a “wheel” can also be a tire and a rim, and a tire can be a rim and tire. I don’t think I’ve ever heard any say, “I have to change my wheel because I have a flat tire.” Normal non-pedantic people say they “have to change the tire” which means tire and rim or wheel.

      fuel dump

    • @paulhunter1735
      @paulhunter1735 2 месяца назад

      One reason could be that it was probably heavily fueled at takeoff for the long distance trip to Japan. Aircraft like this have a maximum weight for landing which is often much less than takeoff weight so diverting to LAX would allow them to burn off some of the fuel weight and allow them to dump fuel to reduce weight before they landed if needed.

    Why does the reporter keep referring to a "tire" falling off? It was a wheel with a tire installed on it. That makes it much heavier and therefore dangerous. The reporter should try to change a "tire" on his car. He would reach for a wheel with a tire already installed, or his car will not be driveable when he is done. The damage done to the cars would have been less severe had it been only a tire bouncing on the parked cars.

      Why would the axle have left too? There's another wheel on the other end of it. If the axle broke it would have remained locked to the wheel. So what is probably missing is the retaining hardware, which is basically a huge nut, which probably departed from the end of the axle.

Firstly this plane was going to Osaka, Japan so would have quite a bit of fuel onboard meaning they cant land (especially now with a missing function of the main gear), so flying to LAX means they can burn fuel but also United have a very big maintenance depot out of LAX so it can get resolved there

As for the fuel; for a flight to Osaka it would have been carrying as much fuel as possible. The flight to SFO would not be long enough to get below max landing weight, but it would allow him to jettison as much fuel as needed off the coast. My assumptions, anyway...

    This isn't the first time a wheel has fallen off a commercial jet this year. This isn't exclusive to Boeing, though the last one I remember was a Delta Boeing 757 nose gear wheel about a month ago at JFK. More than 20 years ago a friend saw a main gear wheel from something similar bounce on US101 before going into the marsh on the east side somewhere south of the Oregon Expressway exit. On February 19th there was a report of a main gear wheel falling off a Latam Airbus A319 at Sao Paulo. So this isn't a Boeing or United thing, even though neither is a company I trust over their competitors. I will never willingly fly with United and avoid 737s.
