    solved getting to the line on the models with the black retainer - unscrew the head, on each side you will see 2 small slits with an almost half circle above them, press the head in at these points and pull the top of the unit off (pushing in releases the retaining clips). Follow the manual instructions for actually putting the new line on.

    I kept wondering if he would uncover an old junk car, boat, or RV up on cinderblocks, under those weeds ;) Anyway, I'm convinced this is a way better corded electric trimmer than anything available from B & D, Toro, or the other manufacturers you see at Home Depot or Lowes. I have been using a B & D Grass Hog 1000, and while the trimmer itself is okay, the spools are complete crap: I have had to buy 4 of them, at $9.00 each, and never been able to use even half the line before the spool itself breaks (the flanges shear off and separate from the hub of the spool). No more B & D line trimmers for me, ever. I really like that this GreenWorks unit takes accessory cutting heads that usually only work on gas trimmers. So I can have the convenience of being able to use a brush cutter head, without the expense, noise, smell, and hassles of a 2-stroke gas engine trimmer. Nice comprehensive demonstration and review, thanks!

    Thanks for a great video which @10:15 appears to answer a question I’d been wondering, taking off the fussy spool mechanism altogether and replacing with one of these fixed-string gadgets. I still have two from about 20 years ago I used in my gas trimmer; I think the replacement was called Grass Gator. I just measured the string on one of them and it’s a triangular section almost .120”. (I think I also used to have the one with centrifugal blades also but have no idea what happened to it.)
    But I haven’t started that in over 15 years, and am looking to upgrade from my small cheapie B&D electric. I’m looking at the Kobalt “equivalent” corded electric model (I’m too cheap to buy cordless) and based on your video I’m fairly certain I can re-use my attachment.

    Hey Jared....Just finished looking at your entire video on this weed eater. ANYONE LOOKING AT THIS WEED EATER MUST LOOK AT YOUR VIDEO!!!! That is the same type of weeds that I will have to cut from time to time. So after hours of researching weed eaters today, your video was the one that made my choice easy. I might have to get a blade for mine for a couple of spots that have thicker weed stalks to deal with. I have no clue what type will fit this model. Any specific blades that you know of that will fit....or even a link that i can go to? Thanks so much for your video!

    • @RepairmanJared
      @RepairmanJared  6 лет назад +1

      I just updated the description with a link to exactly the one I put on it, I can't remember if I did an updated video on this or not but one thing to note is I did lose a detent that keeps the unit from spinning in front of the multi attachment point. I am not sure if it was just a bad detente on mine or if it was because of the extra force from the pivot trim head anyhow my simple fix was to duct tape it to keep it from spinning. I have not looked into fixing it properly since doing that.

    • @RepairmanJared
      @RepairmanJared  9 лет назад

      Lawrence Harasim Do you have the 40 volt? It looked pretty powerful if I could have bought it locally with a return policy I probably would have gotten it, but no one locally had it at a reasonable price with a return policy. So when I saw this one I jumped on it after spending a lot of time researching different models this seemed to have everything I wanted just corded instead of cordless. But its one less thing to go wrong "batteries" If I need to use it in an area not near a plug in I can just grab my small generator I am really impressed with it. Now I am interested in more greenworks stuff but will give this one a good thrashing before I buy anything else they sell. They make an 80 volt chainsaw that looks awesome, 150 cuts aprox before needing a charge and charges in 30 minutes and it cuts from the looks of it just as fast as a gas.

    • @ShuffleSk8Ter
      @ShuffleSk8Ter 9 лет назад

      redicety12 nope i bought mine several years ago..its the 18volt one...but still works very well for what it is...real heavy or high grass weeds i would not recommended but maybe the newer 40v version is better

    • @RepairmanJared
      @RepairmanJared  9 лет назад

      Lawrence Harasim Yup the 40 volt should be almost as good as this plug in version based on what I have seen. The only reason I did not get it was price $180 vs $62 for this and I had not heard all that much about GreenWorks so dunno how well they back there products etc, they may come with a 4 year warranty but what does it take to get a replacement etc and just how well are they built in general, the only flaw I see with this one is the plastic wing nut on the handle but its holding fine for now. Otherwise this thing is really built well from the looks of it.

      It’s a terrible design. The whacker works great but the head is really difficult to get off, and once you do restringing it is a pain. Just buy a different model, or better yet a different weed whacker that has the good old “ three 8 inch” pieces of string on clips instead of a whole spool with a confusing line letter.

    • @RepairmanJared
      @RepairmanJared  8 лет назад +2

      The other day I popped one of the detents the hold the trimmer shaft in place so now there is only 1 detent left and it tries to spin itself loose under torque, a little duct tape fixed that problem. So possibly those detents were not made strong enough for using the blades "when the blades hit something solid there is a lot more force exerted on the whole unit" but the same could have happened on a gas trimmer with the removable shafts this problem could possibly be avoided by only using string and not the blades, but hard to say it could have just been a weak detent as well and would have broken regardless, the duct tape fixes the problem would make it a hassle to take it apart to put a different head on but I don't plan to anyhow.

      In researching this unit (I'm going to order one before spring) I see Greenworks has changed the spool head arrangement design. They now have a green retaining knob that screws on and off. Its also the bump knob for extending the line. Also the new line is now rewound as two separate pieces which is more of a hassle than the single folded in half loop setup. Looks like most owners are satisfied with this equipment.

      I am actually considering getting a gas push trimmer again to replace my mower that is on its last legs, all I use the mower for is cutting down bigger patches of weeds and or other plants that the sheep don't eat in the yard. I will still use this whacker for side hills etc where a push whacker/trimmer wouldn't go easily but a push trimmer does a nice even cut like a mower, but also does a better job on tall weeds/thistles. Also I like that you have the motor running without engaging the trimmer head so you don't have to keep re-starting it every time you let go of the handle like on a push mower. I used to have a craftsman one actually have a video on it on here I liked it but I got sick of sears and craftsman and because of there crazy prices on replacement parts and just making crappy parts in the first place.

I bought one of these, and it horsed through the heavy stuff just like the Husqy, no problem, EXCEPT the line that comes with it is wimpy garbage by comparison to the wicked line that comes with the Husqy. I was looking to see if I could toss a Pivot head on it, now that I see I can (thanks, Jared!) - that resolves that. I can use Husqy bulk line on the electric trimmer. Be CAREFUL OF GREENWORKS! Their same voltage batteries which APPEAR to have the same fit, may not fit into more than one tool, so you wind up having to buy multiple batteries/chargers with the same voltage, for different tools. I got burned by them with this problem, and their answer was to just buy more batteries, because the 'new' batteries were designed differently inside. When I took the battery pack apart, it had THE SAME BATTERY CELLS inside. So they had created a new design simply to make customers buy more batteries and chargers, even with the same voltage batteries. I don't know if they have changed their practices, but I will never again buy a greenworks brand tool. Fool me once, shame on you greenworks. You won't fool me again.

I don't even have an hour on it yet so will do a video once I break it in some "going to have to make up reasons to mow heh, it does bag nice though so I can put the clippings on the garden."
