A fine example of why products of bygone eras were built to last. When such skill was required in order to make something it was well done and meant to be a once in a lifetime purchase. Now we have mass produced trash that was designed with planned obsolescence in mind to guarantee purchasing another item in a year or two. A fine video, fine craftsmanship, fine final product. A pleasure to see.
Thank you. Actually I made a bowl for my friend Kasia who is from Poland. I have visited myself a few times. The old section of Warsaw is brilliant.I had no idea there were so many different types of sausage!! Chris
Hats Off to you Chris!! Some time ago I read an article that stated that modern people is less intelligent and ingenious than half a century ago. In other words, our engineering aptitudes, the ability to come up with problem solving ideas, is going down the drain as time passes and generations evolve... And I kind of agree. You my friend, are the living proof that there's still hope. Brilliant!!
Mate, that is AWESOME! I'm a cabinet maker by trade and watching this made me mourn for the old skills which are falling by the wayside as modern techniques, tools and materials are inexorably taking over. I know apprentices who don't even know how to do dovetails or a mortise and tenon by hand. Very sad. Thank you for keeping the skill alive and thank you for your brilliant videos. :)
Chris, this is the kind of videos I would click a "love" button. Man, you built the mother of all handles, you should be proud of yourself and include that to your resume.
Chop with Chris I love these manually powered machines. I am presently working on a treadle generator to charge a small bank of batteries for a little light at the cottage and charge phones. Nothing huge, just a flywheel with alternating magnets, coils, and some electronics. Well done on your build Chris!👍
This entire vid is a testament to the power of tools that are well maintained. Your chiseling is awesome, hardly any hesitation in knocking off just the amount you want.
Well i expect that most of our comments are top as i have never seen such skill to watch. He is the kind of chap who makes one feel like throwing their tools in the trash,If i was a bit younger i might think about getting better, but that standard is amazing. lovely work indeed.
I love the joinery! It looks so elegant. The treadle power is very interesting. No need to find a socket to plug the machine in. No motor, less parts, no cord. Cool!
Makes me want to get back into the wood shop. Remember building simple pine furniture as a kid using templates at the age of 5. Would love to learn from someone like you. This is truly an artform. Anyone with modern tools can build but it takes a true craftsman to do this type of work.
This is not normally something i would be interested in at all but to see you do this all with hand tools, all your own design, i think this is "effing" amazing. Congratulations you are a very skilled person.
As a Blacksmith and a hobbyist hand tool woodworker, I commend you on your ingenuity and practicality. My day job requires me to make almost all of my own tools or come up with ways to use whats to hand on a continuous basis. You have demonstrated that with a little elbow grease and patience most anything can be accomplished. Oh and nice post drill I have one in my smithy but mostly I just hot punch my holes and needed.
This is like going to the moon using nothing but a slide rule for a calculator. Well done sir! Well done! I am positively dumbfounded by your level of carpentry skills!
Thanks for the compliment. You are definitely more well traveled than I am. I'd love to see pictures of those lathes if you tell me where I can find them on line. Take care. Chris
Wonderful to watch a highly skilled craftsman at work with hand tools only. With a great understanding of the engineering required to build a lathe then demonstrate it in use.
It's so good to be you, isn't it? I am envious of what you can do with wood. My late uncle could do similar things, I thought him genius but I've never learnt his skills to that degree, so you favour him most closely from all I can name, including You Tube. Keep on the good work. Make some stuff from Poland - we were famous for coping with too little in doing too much. Dig in and you'll see:)
Chris, you are not only an excellent creative craftsman, but have some of the best videos on youtube. It's a joy to watch to videos and see you ejnoy your work. Keep 'em comin'.
Man!! I can't even begin to express how impressed I am. You are amazing! First of all, congrats for your channel and thank u deaply for sharing with us your projects. You just got a new fan!
Damn...like a freaking BOSS!! You're woodworking skills are to be envied, sir. I am truly among the envious. I love how you kept the tapping , milling and sawing sounds. Theme from "The Sting" was an added bonus!
My dad is the founder of a wood turners association in his hometown. Of course he is all about technology. However he is also always mindful of his roots. Loved this video.
I can't believe it took me so long to find out about this video. You're an artisan AND an artist, congratulations, this is one of the best demonstrations of talent I've ever seen. You're an inspiration!
Awesome seems to be the theme of comments, and I couldn't agree more. It was the word that popped in my head when I saw it. You even impressed my twelve year old! Excellent cinematography too.
I built a treadle lathe about two years ago for demonstrations and found that the small sewing machine belt was the weak part of the design. I was surprised that you used the same but appear to get much more power transfer from it. I have to find a way to get more tension in the belt. I really enjoyed watching this.
I spray belt dressing in the pulley and flywheel so it gets more traction. I also have a belt tensioner. I have the detailed How To video on my channel as well. Good luck!
Excellent work. Dear sir, you are a perfect paradigm of what a man can do with mind, hands and wood. Absolutely absence of electic power tools. Congratulations from Greece.

This is the best woodworking video, I have ever seen!
Respect!
Thank you!
Chop With Chris You're welcome, this is really great job :-)

Well thank you very much!
Well thats about the nicest thing anyone has ever said about me - many thanks.
Chris
Freaking awesome channel man. That kind of work takes major skill.
👍🏻
Absolutely awesome. You are good. I like your style of presentation. Well done and thank you.
You are most welcome.
Go Irish! Thats about the best compliment I think I have ever had. Take care.
Chris
Man your the mad scientist of woodcraft. That was awesome.
Thanks!
Outstanding job here Chris, what an inspiration. I'd like to one day make one of these.
Thanks and good luck. You get get some of the design details from my video: The Foot Powered Lathe 2.
Chris
Thank you. Actually I made a bowl for my friend Kasia who is from Poland. I have visited myself a few times. The old section of Warsaw is brilliant.I had no idea there were so many different types of sausage!!
Chris
What a genius, creative, i want to make one.
Thanks. I have a How To video on my channel for the lathe so check it out.
Your joinery is *impressive* .
Thanks!

You my friend, are the living proof that there's still hope. Brilliant!!
My wife would kill me if she came home and found one of those things in the garage....
Holy Moly - I haven't heard that in a while which makes the compliment even more special! Thanks and take care.
Chris
I actually only started this a few years ago. Its more about passion than skill.
Chris

Wow! I’d like to see that. Can you please send me some pictures when done - “chopwithchris@gmail.com”
@@ChopWithChris
Hi Chris I will send you a few pics of what I have so far.
How did it work out? I'd love to see it!
This entire vid is a testament to the power of tools that are well maintained. Your chiseling is awesome, hardly any hesitation in knocking off just the amount you want.
Thanks and peace to you and your family.
Chris
This is just flat out poetry. The music, the speed enhancement... It's a delight to watch.
My wife thinks I'm crazy wanting these old tools, glad to knows there's other crazy guys too. Awesome
Welcome to the club!!
Not crazy at all! Hand and foot powered tools will live through all manner of disasters!
HOLY COW!!! I am speechless.... All wood no fastener build using all period hand tools.
Astounding.
Thanks!
Well i expect that most of our comments are top as i have never seen such skill to watch. He is the kind of chap who makes one feel like throwing their tools in the trash,If i was a bit younger i might think about getting better, but that standard is amazing. lovely work indeed.
Thank you so much!
Its called a draw knife. One of my favorite tools to use.
Thanks and take care.
Chris
Thanks again my friend.
Chris
The first 15 minutes are difficult but then the body adjusts. Thanks.
Chris
I'm an avid wood worker myself, and to watch you do this in the way of old is absolutely awsome!
Thanks. More to come.
Chris
Yes - it was a nice touch. It's a journey, not a race so you may as well do the job right.
Chris
I love the joinery! It looks so elegant.
The treadle power is very interesting. No need to find a socket to plug the machine in. No motor, less parts, no cord. Cool!
Thanks!
As a fellow wood smith I tip my hat to you sir. You truly are an inspiration.
Thank you very much brother!
You don't need talent if you have passion. Good luck.
Chris
Jim, I will give it a try.
Thanks.

+First Last Well thank you very much!
God, those tools you used in this video looks better than what most crafters use today. Seriously, I want to use something like that.
👍🏻💪
Omg. It's absolutely beautiful. I'm shocked you found the pieces you did. You brought it back to it's glory.
Thanks!
If you've ever seen any of Matthias's home made wooden machines you know it is a high compliment.
superman! my father is a carpenter too. missed my childhood days playing with those tools
Thanks and good luck!
Chris
This is not normally something i would be interested in at all but to see you do this all with hand tools, all your own design, i think this is "effing" amazing. Congratulations you are a very skilled person.
Danke mein Freund. Ich habe viele Male nach Deutschland gereist. Sie haben ein schönes Land!

Thanks. I think blacksmithing may be my next calling. Take care.
Chris
You sir, are a mechanical and wood-working genius. Bravo!
It does not even look simple, what a wonderful way to use your strenght and wits !
This is like going to the moon using nothing but a slide rule for a calculator.
Well done sir! Well done! I am positively dumbfounded by your level of carpentry skills!
I was so fascinated by what I saw that I didn't notice the music until the end of the video! This is just amazing!
Thanks and more to come.
Chris
That is one of the beast work with no power tool ever!!!
thank's for that brother
God Bless!
Thanks - I love doing it.
Chris
Thanks for the compliment. I actually have no formal training. I just follow my passion. Give it a try.
Chris
Thanks for the compliment. You are definitely more well traveled than I am. I'd love to see pictures of those lathes if you tell me where I can find them on line.
Take care.
Chris
Thank you my friend.
Chris
Just the stuff I enjoy! Thank you indeed!
craftsmanship level infinity.
Thank you very much for compliment.
Chris
No screws, no nails, without electricity!.

Thanks and more therapy to come.

Extremely cool! I remember watching The Woodright's Shop with my dad as a kid. This brings back alot of memories.
Wonderful to watch a highly skilled craftsman at work with hand tools only. With a great understanding of the engineering required to build a lathe then demonstrate it in use.
Thanks Eric!

I love how you kept the tapping , milling and sawing sounds.
Theme from "The Sting" was an added bonus!
This is the kind of career path I'd follow if I was even moderately handy. Noble and awe inspiring.
the elegance of your tailstock base is a thing of joy!
Thanks!
Indeed!
Thanks for the compliment.
Chris
My dad is the founder of a wood turners association in his hometown. Of course he is all about technology. However he is also always mindful of his roots.
Loved this video.
You have an awesome dad!!
Love the carving you did on the tailstock "riser" to match the Dunlop design. What a hoot!
It's so cool to see someone working without a ton of powertools. Awesome work !
+SaitoGray Well thank you very much!
This is not only perfect handcraft! This is art!! Greetings from Germany. :-)
Thanks a for your support!
Chris
Well everything just works out perfectly for you doesn't? Good job dude
Rob,
Thank you very much. I have many more videos for you to enjoy and there are more to come. Take care.

Very impressive - thanks for sharing
Chris
you make very good videos because you really look like you are enjoying yourself working with the tools and you don't take yourself to serious
I find this to be the best response to this video.
Truly WOW
I can't believe it took me so long to find out about this video. You're an artisan AND an artist, congratulations, this is one of the best demonstrations of talent I've ever seen. You're an inspiration!
Thank you so much. I hope you enjoy all my videos.
I'm 14 and can build pretty well, I've always been good at building and mechanics but, whoa man, this is amazing
Awesome seems to be the theme of comments, and I couldn't agree more. It was the word that popped in my head when I saw it. You even impressed my twelve year old! Excellent cinematography too.
Wow - he watched vs. playing Minecraft - impressive. "The Rocking Chair" may also hold his attention. Take care.
Chris
Chris, you are a fantastic guy! I adore your affection for hand tools and the way you approach your projects! You must be a happy person. Bless you.
Thank you so much!
Wow. I hope you had as much fun making the lathe as i did watching your video.
Thank you.

Μπολ είναι πολύ δύσκολο. Έχω ένα πολύ ισχυρό πόδι.
It's pretty smooth. I can get about 2000 rpm. Once I get into a rhythm it's ok. I elongated the foot pedal to I can use either lag. Thanks.
Chris
Obrigado meu amigo. Chris
Thanks my friend. Now you need to watch the sequel - Foot Powered Lathe II. Go Irish!
Chris
And thank you very much.
Chris
I was thinking about making one of these. Maybe some time in the future.
Chris
Thanks! More to come.
Chris
Not only a great project but I love the editing and style of the video itself! Thanks.
Thanks - I enjoy the video editing as much as the woodworking.
Chris
I congratulate you on a job well done, our younger fellow earthlings could learn a lot from you.
