    I genuinely love these videos, as someone who's also self taught I can truly appreciate that rewarding satisfaction that comes with finding your own shooting style that helps you nail that target.

    Well done ,,, there's thousands of videos out there ... and I watched hundreds of them ... you're painstakingly going through every step not only how you should stand and what you should be looking at ... Also what you should be thinking ,,, very good ,,, thank you so much ... D

    • @davidcarpenter9232

      Yeah man ,,, thanks for touching on all the reasons for getting outside ,,, and sling'n some arrows ... I live out in the country and we used to have an excellent little golf course with a par 5 ,,, you got to pitch across a creek a couple times ... just being out there ,,, I think that's what this is about you know getting you out away from whatever might be troubling you ... I think archery is a lot like golf ... in that it isn't like shooting a gun ,,, it's more like throwing a baseball ,,, you know you got to be the ball or " the arrow " ,,, thanks a lot man ... D

      Do the anchor points still come into play when you use a release?

    • @pfalky2k
      @pfalky2k 7 лет назад

      +A magic. YES! Absolutely. I shoot compound with a release & anchor points are still absolutely crucial to consistent shooting - as some of my woefully low scoresheets will attest when I've been careless with my anchoring.

    I cannot thank you enough for this video! I have been shooting an English style longbow (50# @ 28") on and off for a few years and just started getting back into it after a three year hiatus. My issue has always been inconsistent shooting. Watching this video and seeing a proper draw and form technique helped immensely. Went from 1 out of 8 shots on target (a water bottle at ten yards) to 3 out of 5 at the same distance within five minutes of practicing exactly what I saw here. Turns out a huge part of my issue and why i couldn't anchor well or consistently was I was drawing from my bicep and not my back. You sir are amazing and once again thank you!

    • @davidcarpenter9232
      @davidcarpenter9232 3 года назад

      Talking about climbing ,,, I'm from Florida ... I've never seen a hill much less a mountain ,,, but I was up in Carolina at Linville Falls ... And we was going to jump off the waterfall ,,, and you got to climb a 50-foot rockface ... I had some climbers telling me where to put my hands and feet ... I did well ,,, but I was terrified ... I knew if I was going to jump ,,, I had to do it immediately ... I had a army buddy been to war ,,, but he waited a few minutes to jump ... He had to climb down ... D

    Great video. As a beginner archer researching the sport, it seems that there are a lot of passionate people out there trying to express their archery views and techniques, but your video was more well shot, spoken, and edited than most of what I have viewed to get across some useful basics of the craft. Thank you for the effort

    First off I want to thank you for this video because it completely changed my form and my shooting has improved dramatically! I was hunching and pulling with my arm therefor I wasn't really pulling my scapula all that tight which resulted not pulling full draw on the bow. I been shooting a 50# bow with this new form it literally feels like a 40# bow night and day difference! Now my muscles are soar but in a good way and it feels amazing!

    Nice work. I try to tell people you can learn how to do nearly anything from youTube if you just find a guy. You referenced Jeff K. That guy is a badass. Watching videos of you and him imparts decades of knowledge and 1000s of arrows in a few minutes. If applied correctly, things should go well. Things are going very well already. Out of three arrows, two of them were center circle side by side and the third resting on top of the other two at 10m. I almost lost it. I've only been shooting for 2 days now but had a couple of goes at it. I would say I have less than 200 arrows fired with double digit center circle hits. The center of my target is just a hole the size of a quarter now. Not beginner's luck. I think about every shot. Even listen to the sound of the string after release. I figure the less I hear it, the better the release, but if it is twanging, the short usually went off. Still working on that theory.

    Just had my first proper archery session (and, already I'm hooked:) - 13:32 is something I wish I'd known/realised earlier today. I think I'm even going to have an impressive bruise from some shots where I was consciously thinking about the release, thus almost _plucking_ the string (and somehow send it hitting my arm between the guard and my wrist)
    Anyways, quality tips and inspiration here that I'll definitely carry onto next Tuesday's shooting. Which I hardly can't wait for.
    Thanks for that!

    Nicely done!! An informative and relaxed approach to shooting. I've always found archery to be a bit 'zen' perhaps a little like fly fishing where form is more the challenge rather than the outcome. I've lost my shooting mojo but I think vids like this one might just help me get it back. Thanks!

    Thanks for the quickly mentioned point...at the first anchor point KEEP PULLING. I was bracing my hand in a frozen position and my release was comical at best. Now it it so simple to release and basically just fall into the second anchor point.

    Hey Jim, did you ever do any physical exercises for your arms and back in order to be able to handle higher poundage bows?
    I've been working out with a kettlebell for a while now just to be able to handle my 40# short recurve. I mean I can shoot it no problem, it's just that after few shots, I struggle to keep my bow steady, start to shake a lot.
    I don't understand why, I can hold my 35# flatbow all day long at full draw.
    (and yeah my flatbow is about 10 inches longer than my recurve so it's only natural that it is much smoother to draw and hold, but still....)
    Thanks

      Going to the gym and lifting helped me, but no substitute for pulling a bow. The muscle groups used for archery are difficult to target in the gym.
      I did the same thing you are talking about to work up in poundage. Living in Alaska, it was kinda my only option for staying strong in the winter. I’m not really one to shoot much when it’s really cold and nasty out side(indoor archery just kills my soul).
      If I lived in a climate that allowed me to shoot every day, I would buy a bow slightly lighter than what you have, and shoot the hell out of it. Once you get to the point where you can shoot 100-150 arrows a day with good form and accuracy with out much of a problem, then move up 5 lbs. as time goes by, repeat process.
      Just my 2 cents.

    Great videos Jim. I have a question. I switched from a recurve bow to a hybrid longbow. The longbow has a more traditional flat grip. I noticed that your bow hand grip on a recurve is loose. Do you recommend a loose grip on the longbow or do you change your grip? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      +lucian epperhart just had a quick look at your video, it's fine but you need a second anchor point. for me when i release the string, i sort of slide my hand back to my ear. Do that every time and you won't flick away. It can be any second anchor, but one along the same line as your standard anchor is best; it just carries on the release smoother. Other than that, keep it up ^_^

    where is the string when you are at full draw? in the center of the bow? in line with the arrow or just doesn't matter? i have a problem to keep the arrow in line with my eye so maybe the string position is the key...when i aim using the tip my groups are on the left (i am right handed).

    At the end of the video it shows your grip during a shot. You seen to have 2 or 3 fingers curled back and not around the grip. Is there a reason?

    • @pfalky2k
      @pfalky2k 7 лет назад

      that's a good question. far as I can tell you (as I've ever been taught) the more grip (skin on wood) you have on the bow, the more torque you put on it, the bow will twiston release, your shot may go wild, or you may may be off-mark by a few inches, but your accuracy will be affected. I use a bow sling (thumb-first-finger loop) & my only contact with the bow is round the heel of my thumb. I don't encircle the grip at all with my fingers & let the bow-sling catch the bow's fall-forward (it does take a bit of time to learn to trust the bow-sling. when I learned that trick it took a while to learn that not gripping the bow would not result in my bow clattering to the ground. but my shots & accuracy improved exponentially when I did suss it out. mark me, I still do occasionally forget & lightly encircle the grip. but I try to catch & override that instinct)

      You do it right after you're at full draw - from the backside it looks like you're trying to hug the bow with your neck. Going in for an intimate kiss eh?

    I've only just bought a bow and started watching videos about archery before I fire my first shots. Let's hope I can learn something heh... Nah I'm kidding, I'm just making sure I have the theory down before putting it into practice since I'll be self taught.... I don't like people enough to look for a club in County Durham.

    I think the guy at the back can trained to do it without thinking but the guy at front is where the intuition comes in to it 🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹👍🏻

    All very well to quote James Dickey but I had best have confidence in my surgeon and HE best have confidence in him self ( also experience) . You don't want amateur night when somebody is working YOU!

    one thing. how do you get away with nipping down the woods for a bit of bowshooting? PS, narcissistic? you are taking time out of your day & shoot to freely pass on your knowledge of our art. that's not narcissism. that is teaching. thank you. sincerely
