@@tymjones I cannot answer for OP but I believe MMIW stands for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. It's beyond tragic.
@@macpro75 Yes, that is indeed what it stands for. Since this show mentioned graphic novels/comics, there's one by a pair of Indigenous women I highly recommend which speaks about MMIWG in a way that is accessible to both teens and adults, and provides a glossary at the end with information on this and other important issues. There are two so far, the first called Surviving the City and the second called From the Roots Up, both by Tasha Spillett and Natasha Donovan.

@@mariag.8242 I find that the strangest (and saddest) part in these laws -- they seem to prioritize white feelings and do not even realize (or acknowledge, or *care* ) that ignoring *real* historical facts and information might make students of colour uncomfortable. Infuriating. I saw a great quote recently (paraphrased (poorly)): If Ruby Bridges was old enough to experience it, kids today can learn about it.
Florida, Texas….the GOP wants us to continue learning mythology instead of history. A bunch of snowflakes with too much power and too little accountability.

What is with this new thing? Land acknowledgement seems to be a trend that's new and I don't get it. There's a lot better ways to help natives than saying pretty words in a ceremonious way. A uni class I had recently also had it.

Seems odd to thank someone for land that was wrested from them, but if Amber believes they still have a valid land claim then the show should pay the tribe, otherwise it’s just pretty words, back it up with cash.

I’m here to defend Mrs. Potts by mentioning that she could easily be Chip’s ADOPTED mother! A lovable old woman with a big heart adopting an orphan is exactly the kind of wholesomeness that Disney aspires to, but does not always deserve.
I'm here to undermine your depiction of Mrs. Potts to point out that a seemingly harmless old woman with her culinary skills could easily tempt then abduct a street urchin for kitchen labor and to massage the varicose veins in her legs.

Also, all the MISSING native women who are never found, never publicized like white women, and even the searches are inhibited by the mish-mash of legal jurisdictions between reservation lands and county/states. EDIT: neglected to add that it’s also an horrendous issue in Canada. Just devastating. 😔 😡

That was cool. I hadn’t heard a land acknowledgment from a US-based show, and that was a nice addition to an already excellent piece.
It's becoming more common in US academia, depending on where you are and what field you're in, but yes, very uncommon in TV.

Matoaka is pronounced Ma-toe-AH-ka. But yeah, most of us Indigenous people on Turtle Island (the original name for North America) find anything Disney does in its depictions of any of our people to be highly unrealistic and offensive.

Amber, thanx for having a coherent view of our responsibility, when it comes to peoples being removed from the land they walked upon freely, for ages. It still also happens elsewhere.
Native Americans in the west or gulf coast were the only ones that wore revealing bikini with skirt type clothing mostly because of the climate.
In most tribal communities, they wear clothes for no other reason than; protection from the elements, protecting the private parts, and art, and their unique traditional reasons. Also covering up out of shame is ungodly for most tribal communities. Colonizers gave people body issues and made everyone cover up in the name of Christianity.

@@mjs6157 If you think the 1960s is the first time through history that we wore distinct two pieces of clothing covering those areas, you really need to go back to school. Just because it was fashion, was defined for use at a beach and got it's name then, doesn't equal that it started that late in history (or by white women).

When Disney made Pocahontas I was LIVID. However, I made sure my daughter knew the true history and then we went to see the movie. We also discussed everything that was a lie/inaccurate in the movie.
I couldn't watch it. I made it about 15 minutes. I nearly broke my friend's DVD out of sheer disgust and anger.
Yeah I can't watch that movie it hurts.
We should all follow that advice/idea.

I taught 10th-grade English, and one of my students thought Pocahontas and John Smith got married. Some others backed her up, thinking that's what happened in the movie. We just had to move on because I was too unfamiliar with the movie. Those kids thought the movie was historically accurate.
Every time I hear "Just Around the Riverbend" and she sings "should I marry Kokoum?" I scream yes! From when I was a child, I knew she should've chosen him smh

Dee Robinson that’s a very ill informed and aggressive way of framing someone who’s processing terrible news. Not just that, the way the OP expressed it is a pretty common thing for people to say when they are too distressed and at a loss of words. There are 20 different appropriate reactions that they might be feeling all at once and that’s usually an overwhelming feeling.

In addition to her wonderful commentary, Amber deserves praise for letting all the kids who grew up with 90’s Disney movies finally have their complaints be heard on nation television.

I am disappointed but not shocked that there was no oversight within the Marvel organization by allowing some "animator" depict indigenous women in such a demeaning way due to a despicable "fantasy" of an ignorant and historically inaccurate depiction of people. Marvel, do better!

This segment should be a required part of US history class.
The artwork shown is pretty much lifted from old Frank Frazetta "Conan the Barbarian" and Edgar Rice Burroughs fantasy poster/paperback-cover illustrations. In other words, a successful formula of exaggerated feminine and masculine physicality that worked in a different context, being thoughtlessly, perhaps lazily, and definitely wrongly repurposed.
The art is from a new Conan comic, so it's definitely an intentional nod.
That cover was drawn by a woman named Jan Bazaldua.
Not to undercut the point of the segment which I agree with completely but the first point Amber makes is that it was drawn by a man when it was not.
The male writer made a bad choice and an insensitive decision that was not well thought out by using the name Matoka.

I never cared for comics, but this is how women, of all backgrounds, have been portrayed in them forever. Like, have you ever seen a comic before? Keep in mind, we're talking about DRAWINGS of hot characters who have superhuman abilities lol- none of it is exactly realistic. In case you didn't notice, all the men are drawn to ridiculous body attractiveness standards. I mean, if they were gonna draw ME in the comic, I'd wanna look unrealistically attractive too. (shrug)
True, this is the way women have traditionally been drawn in comics. But it's still a bad idea and it's never too soon for a new tradition.

In almost all portrayals of these comics is always the ones where they draw the women in skimpy, metal bikinis thinking that's soneong all women would wear in a fantasy setting.

Well this is Disney after all. Telling the true story would never get any kids into the theaters or begging Mom and Dad to buy the _Pocohontas_ action dolls, or Happy Meals®.
It's not exactly my favorite story either, but I'm glad you are realistic about it.
For anyone interested in real Native History I highly recommend '500 Nations'. It was originally a VHS set with Encyclopedia, it's one of the most comprehensive compilations I've ever watched.
