Let's be honest here. Us dads do like our tinkering. I find myself tinkering and tweaking the settings, more than gaming! Well. I guess tinkering becomes the game 😂
I'm just like this guy, have very little time to do anything. I've had the og ally for the last 3 months. First thing I setup was PS3 emulator and a couple games off Xbox and Epic. I'm still tinkering with it when I can but I play it at lunch at work and before bedtime as well. I have had no issues with setup and it takes a little over a minute from turning it on and actually starting a game. It's totally worth what I paid for and it's only the Z1 non-extreme model.
Honestly the best thing i did for my ally is install bazzite so that you can just turn it on and play. It turns it into a steam deck so that it's console like. In a middle of a game but have stuff to do? Hit the power button and then come back hours later and resume. Can't do that with windows reliably.
The Switch is easier to pick up and play, but doesn't have the games and capabilities I want. I have the OG Ally and love it. Dad of 3, full time job, and dialysis patient. It suits my lifestyle.
First time dad here, i still own the rog ally z1 this device is amazing, helps me through the night while baby is sleeping and makes me relax and distress. The convenience of just turning it on and play for half and hour while sitting on the rocking chair compare to picking up controller and sit infornt of a tv is totally game changer.
I got stick for selling my gaming laptop because I am a father of 3 kids and in a full time job. So I bought a Rog Ally so I could at least have a chance to game haha 😆. So far so good, yeh it's not as powerful and yeh it's on a 7inch screen, but who the hell cares when your in bed and able to wack a game on. That is priceless
It's a handheld pc . This is why so many people have problems trying to get it to work . People buy it thinking they get a console ready to play outta the box when that's not the truth . I'm 44 so yeah trying to read the things on the screen is too small but my eyesight isn't too bad .I've already got a gaming laptop buying this wasn't really necessary, in the end I felt like I wasted my money on it but I still felt like owning it .
I totally agree about just wanting to pick up and play. And until the Ally X, the switch was my daily driver. I'm finding that that added boost of performance over the Z1 extreme is making it easier for me to play with minimal tinkering. The more time I spend with it, the more I enjoy it. I get cyberpunk running solid on performance 17 w and presets at "Steam Deck" settings.
Completely unrelated to the topic of your video, but I noticed your hoodie. My family used to visit the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome a fair amount and it's an underrated gem of a museum. Nice to see it getting some recognition lol.
@@prettyambitious79 I used to play it in the bed until I fell asleep and it burned a blister on me. That was the Z1 extreme. The X doesn't seem to run as hot.
I have the OG Ally Z1 Extreme too. I have the VRR ear buds too. I plug them in with my Ally when I am tired of a certain someone's mouth.😅😅😅. It's a perfect match, the vrr ear buds and the Ally. Had I known the Ally X was coming out. I would have waited but since I got the OG. I am not switching. I got get my money's worth out of it. I got accessories to.
As a dad and recent owner of the ally x, it's the best device I've ever owned, far better than the steam deck. It is very much pick up and play. I don't know what you're doing but it's simple. This is a weird video.
Minus the being a dad part, totally same boat haha. It’s lacking that screen the Deck has but I don’t find myself feeling like I’m missing out when actually playing. It’s just that good as a system (not counting the whole.. Windows thing lolol)
Steam Deck has a working quick resume which is amazing for a dad. It also has the track pads for paying strategy games and UI navigation. Plus the best ergonomics. That is why I'm probably going to be choosing the steam deck. I never play my switch because the ergos suck and I'm not a big fan of Nintendo games.
My problem with the price proposition is that if you're willing to sail the high seas, this is way cheaper to get than a Nintendo Switch. Yes, you can sail on the switch, but it is much more difficult than in a windows device.
Battery life isn't as heinous as expected. AAA on max performance gets a couple hours of gaming time. But that's enough to chill on couch, play a bit, then plug back in for recharge.
I agree with everything you said about these handhelds and especially the Switch. The downside is the games that are available aren't that great. I've never really been a Nintendo fan because most of their games seemed to be geared for younger players and too much like cartoons than serious games that you find on the other platforms. There's only so much Mario a person can take before being driven insane.
I mean it's a PC.... You either know how to configure one or you don't. You could have one of these set up to just turn on and play switch games in 10-20 minutes, you can also set it up to dual boot into windows/bazzite so you can use it as a steamdeck. For anyone not familiar with PC gaming I can see it being annoying but it's pretty straightforward if you are.
Some good info in this vid, as far as Windows goes. But maybe mention (for the tinkerers) how supremely better it becomes once you install Bazzite. Those issues all but disappear. It picks up and plays like the switch, but with better battery, performance, and bigger library. Hell, you can even play switch games on it. I opted to dual-boot for the best of both worlds. Even for those who don't like to mess around with software, i think it's worth the time to do it to set it and forget it.
Great comment. I'm releasing one on the Lenovo Legion Go here soon and will talk about Bazzite a lot which is a solid point to improvement. Thank you for watching and commenting.

That is fair, but in all honesty, the Windows experience on the Ally X is really not as bad as everyone online seems to be saying it is. It takes a little more effort to set up, but once it is set up it is mostly seamless. The only thing that really is not as good with the Ally X is the suspend/resume function on Linux.
