I've always loved Rhoda and Joe! Never felt the same after the divorce! Nearly 50 years later, here I am!
David Groh (Joe) was so darn handsome! Sadly, he passed away in 2008 at the age of 68...May he be resting in heavenly peace 🙏🙏🙏🙏
We shared a birthday, and I am 68
This show brings back a lot of good memories. Sitting on my mom's bed eating chips, just before bedtime watching different sitcoms on black and white TV. My dad, downstairs watched a different Chanel on the TV downstairs. I don't remember having a color TV until i was about 12 years old. You know such simple things seemed to bring such enjoyment back then.
The simple things, like real food instead of junk food, family being in the same room together, having conversations about their lives...instead of glued to glowing screens. Yeah, nostalgia for the good old days.
@@FigaroHey beats staring at cell phones ignoring the family and friends. We snacked a little, commented on the show and talked during commercials. It was great.
The good old days spending time with family
Wow, you had 2 tvs.
@@merricat3025Exactly what I was thinking 😄 Soo progressive!
A very talented and lovely woman....A true TV icon and role model. Thank you Valerie for being you, and Rhoda.
RIP also Lorenzo Music and Ron Silvers and David Groh...who after Rhoda went on to do a well respected performance on General Hospital. Harold Gould was so handsome!!!!!!!!
LOVE Harold Gould!!😊😊
May Harold Gould and David Groh RIP!
Cool to see Howard Hessman on here! always a funny guy :)
so wonderful... RIP Valerie Harper
It’s neat to see the small parts being done by actors who went on to bigger things. This episode had the future Johnny Fever (WKRP in Cincinnati) and the precious episode had The Fonz (Happy Days).
I loved Winkler's part in the party-from-hell episode. You heard a bit of Fonzie's voice come out, "excuse me, but could SOMEBODY pass the salt!" 😄😄😄
"Previous" not precious!
There was nobody like her in television before. And there was nobody as good as her since.
This is a great lesson for today. NEVER ignore the red flags you get. We all know that she and Joe get married and he tells her he is not sure he wants to be married and they get divorced. In the first 3 episodes alone, they fight when they meet, he ditches her to go to a ballgame, he sleeps over at his ex-wife's house, tells her that they should see other people and generally behaves like an ass. Instead of heeding all these red flags, she pushes full steam ahead into a relationship with a self-centered guy that is not that into you Rhoda, that she has to constantly soothe his ego, make excuses for his bad behavior, always saying she is sorry for not being as understanding as he wants her to be and has to use sex to keep him remotely interested. Run Rhoda Run.
PrincessofErised You know what? I’m only now starting to watch Rhoda on this channel. I wasn’t allowed to watch it as a kid in the 70s. I’m completely shocked (and Ive only made it to this episode)! Already I think she was too good for Joe! Way too good. Already I think he kind of treated her rudely. I thought the character of Rhoda was supposed to be this independent woman and all that. What were the writers thinking?
The character of Rhoda, even on MTM wasn't all that independent. Somewhat opinionated? Yes. Independent ? Not even Mary was all that independent.
It's just my opinion, but I get the idea from a lot of sitcoms that women put up with a lot, and ignored red flags because they always figured: I can change him.
Men NEVER think like that, women ALWAYS think like that.
@Joshua Swain he needed her income. You sound like an incel btw lol
Red flags 4 sure.
@@dianamarie4351 you’ll get over it toots . You sound like a b itch by the way
This episode hit very close to home as a single 30-year old in a big city :D such a good show!
I like all her show so classic and clean👍
I miss CLEAN tv. The shit that kids watch today is just sad and unbelievable... It's a farts and poops and butts...unreal. Like all the good manners we used tot each are out the window - it's ALL about doing what YOU want. That's not SOCIETY - that's ANARCHY lol ;) There's almost nothing you can watch without SOME type of embarrassment for someone at ANY age... What do you expect though when nowadays parents LITERALLY buy their kids SHIT toys to play with. A piece of shit (emoji) is what PARENTS give to their kids... The world's all fucked up... It ALWAYS has been but I like going back to THESE times when it wasn't in our face 24/7. Ignorance WAS bliss ;) Cheers.
Anybody else remember those artist entry exams on matchbooks!?
You old, lol!
Johnny Fever and in the 1st episode The Fonz!Always cool to see sitcom icons before they were famous.
nibsvkh IKR
2nd episode, but still the Fonz! Interestly enough, it actually aired after the first Happy Days! :)
Sooo enjoying this especially in May 2024 . Am Yisrael Chai from a gentile in Canada
Boy, Joe is a crab. Run Rhoda Run.
Boy rhoda was a feminist , run Joe run
Joe is divorced and a Father...of course he is gun shy. I'd be too
No. He is a man with a business. I speak from experience.
"NICE" men cannot run a business, they would get destroyed.
By the way, Joe IS nice...you should meet some REAL businessmen...

Phone booths? Yea, those were good days. Always loved Valerie. She is now stress free.
Dr. Johnny Fever!😂
Mr. Grime works at WKRP.... in Cincinnati !
howard hessman :)
Am I the only one who got the feeling that this Rhoda is completely different from the character we know and love in the Mary Tyler Moore Show? It's so weird
Loved this show. Thanks for uploading !
I could watch their love story forever and not tire over it.😊🩵🩷🙏🏼
The sound of cool whip always wakes me up. lol
"Lets play that great American game.....Eye Contact"
Smart writing
I loved this series and the other one called Valerie Harper -1980s it was never the same when she was fired. I was so disappointed.
love those pics of Valerie in her younger days on the intro :) especially now that she has passed!
I always liked Valerie Harper even in her 1980s series titled Valerie. It was a pity that she was fired from the sitcom. It was never the same with the main character killed off.
Didn't she want more money?
Brenda "I'm still getting over the "what fun it is to be a woman" hoax. You and me babe
Me too😊😊😊
CHOO CHOO!! More fans climb aboard the Joe train, and populate the sea of Rhoda lovers even more! How pressured this show must have felt
LOL
Great episode
This is really good for an oldtimey tv show ❤ Rhoda reminds me of penny from Big Bang Theory and Joe reminds me of Vince Vaughn from those old 90s movies 👍
Great tv show. Great actors. Iconic NYC.
This is when the show should have taken a turn to have Rhoda date other guys and see Joe off and on. It would have kept the spirit of Rhoda alive longer and maybe she could have married Joe later on down the road. The show could have had a longer run then it did!
If they did that it would of been called Mary Tyler Moore Show.
The writers were real idiots. The way they wrote the sisters characters just amazes me. It's like they were TRYING to kill the show.
It lasted 5 seasons! ..still a successful show!..The show's wedding episode of Joe & Rhoda was one of the most watched single episodes in TV history up to that point..they later divorced in season 3, and that's when ratings started to go downhill..seems people preferred Rhoda & Joe together after all over her being single..Plus, I'm thinking that was probably more than enough for Valerie after playing Rhoda on this show as well as The Mary Tyler Moore show..The show lasted longer than "Phyllis", the other spin-off series anyway..
@@Muzikgirl67 gg
@@Muzikgirl67 I believe that record STILL stands. I was the only show ever to be No 1 in the nielsen rating on it's pilot episode. This show broke all kinds of records at that point... HUGE show. They tried to do what was RIGHT story wise but people didn't want it and that killed the show...still lasted 2 more seasons but the ratings were junk by then...same with Phyllis.
The blonde announcer guy from WKRP!!! I'm a young adult who grew up with old TV shows. ❤❤❤
This is where the show could have taken another turn for the better. Joe did not want to get married again as he so stated. Rhoda was back out again in the dating circle again which made her character the most appealing. When she got married to Joe the character changed and it seemed she was constantly trying to get approval from Joe and forgot who she was in her own right. Joe was not right for her. When they divorced Rhoda had already lost her edge and the show finally ended. The best way to see Rhoda at her best is in the Mary Tyler Moore show . Howard Hesseman is so funny! He eventually married Anne Romano in One Day at a Time. RIP Valerie and the cast of Rhoda.
r
Actually the separation and divorce episodes are quite unique in my eyes, I am sad they divorced but it was interesting to see.
Exactly!!💯💯
Johnny Fever with nail heads! It doesn't get any better than that!
People opining about “red flags” need to consider that this show is from the 70s. For the 70s, Joe was pretty “advanced” for a man. Modern eyes see decades worth of societal introspection about the more problematic aspects of romantic relationships between men and women…Insights which weren’t as fully developed or widely adopted in 1974. Hell…Maude had only been on for 2 years!
Rhodas date is from the Bob Newhart show and W K R P in Cincinatti Johnnie Fever ! thanks
Just loved this show..who wouldn’t love the Morgensterns? Sadly, we lost Valerie too young.
She was eighty did you want her to live to a hundred lol
My sisters and I often felt that our parents were exactly like the Morgensterns. My mother was a genius at manipulating via guilt and my father often just blended into the background.
She was 80
I like Rhoda's hats!
I am really wanting to learn how she tied all the scarves she wore on her head.
@@RepentfollowJesus somebody posted it there RUclips videos on that
Now I know where Courtney Cox got her inspiration to play Monica in Friends!
Shows like this taught us women that it was ok to be single. Amongst the failures and successes you didn't have to be married make it in the world today. Other shows were That Girl and Mary Tyler Moore.
He is already breaking her heart ... not good. (How is it that I can see it all so clearly now, but not when I was in a 16-year relationship that wasn't good for me?) Someone commented on one of these episodes that Rhoda is actually the precursor to Carrie in Sex and the City, and I think that's very apparent in the way they deal with men. They're independent-minded women as long as they don't care too much, but they both become somewhat undone when they fall in love for real (weakened instead of strengthened). Is it because of the type of man they fall for? Is it because they love too much and that level of love is not reciprocated? Are there relationships where love between the two people is relatively equal or is there always an imbalance? At 42, I have more questions than ever-and, at least right now, no real desire to fall in love again. It feels kind of like a form of tyranny in retrospect.
As they say we can’t see the forest for the trees. That’s how love is when it strikes 😂
Loved Rhonda wearing her kerchief in her hair. Definitely a 70's......
The part where Rhoda is trying to think of happy marriages that work - she names Princess Grace and Prince Rainier - from what I've read, they were not happy...
I adore 1970's fashions & Hats The most
And shoes of course !!
Do you remember the so-called elephant pants that Brenda is wearing often? What a terrible idea they were.
@@jeanmiller1142 2 or 3 years ago 1970:s grenade returned on fashion. One day perhaps in thé future They Will reput éléphant pants on fashion
I love the apts! A peek into nyc.
It's a TV studio set. Apartment in NY don't look like that.
A GREAT EPISODE 😂😂😂❤❤
Legends all.
anybody notice that Carlton's voice was narrating "animal world"
I just know he sounds like he wants lasagna
The phone booth! I'll bet there are many many movie and tv plot points dependent upon phone booths, now gone from the landscape! One of my favorite is Jumping Jack Flash with Whoopie Goldberg. I think The Sting also used a phone booth, plus a wonderful scene in The Best Years of our Lives in a drug store phone booth. Enjoy! 🍿📽️🍿.
valerie harper is so pretty she looked like a young madonna without the plastic surgery
kellie hall she's a natural beauty.
Madonna wishes she looked remotely like Valerie
For some reason, Rhoda is too desperate. She pushed Joe into marriage. To me, a relationship with Joe would be emotionally exhaustive. I liked Johnny Fever's 1980s sitcom Head of the Class, where he taught a class of genius kids in high school.
I loved him in wkrp
Great episode. Btw, Masters and Johnson would eventually spit up. ;)
I love the sister! 😄
Even back thank good family values were ALLOWED to be shown in TV shows. what Rhoda was talking to Joe about successful marriages. Marriages take work, abut a lot of young people believe and are being told in college, that marriages are not supposed to last. Bullcrap. Its because they didn't choose the right person, and were afraid to WORK at the marriage and make sacrifices for each other and didn't really love each other and don't know how to talk to each other.
And Joe and that whole 'Me Generation' were the role-models for selfishness in relationships. Joe is totally selfish, all about himself, impatient, with anger issues - useless.
Agreed. I loved all the conversations she had with him.
Today's world is a cesspool of ignorance. The do what you want attitude and they way they ignore history (since google thinks for them) is pathetic quite frankly. Everything you said is TRUE. From a marriage taking work (nowadays though, you just say fuck and move on...wtf is THAT?) to saying it wont last...etc etc Lots of babies in hollywood NOW crying about their shitty childhoods. EVERYTHING now is 'I hate you mom, I hate you dad'... The world is trouble because we don't TEACH the babies anymore... Only people that are content are the phone zombie sheep people or a certain sect that just says to hell with the rules anyways. Oh SURE life is grand when you can just say fuck it and WALK AWAY from your problems.
@@FigaroHey that's what TODAY is all about. Me Me Me...he's got nothing on people today lol Watch 'They Live' people...more important today then it was back then.
She went HAM (no offense) on Joe. MASTERS AND JOHNSON! Freaking brilliant!!! 😂😂😂 #HistoricalSexJoke
This episode made me feel sad, they should of stayed together, but it was not meant to be.
The writers sucked every opportunity for life and light out of this show. Shame.
@@StrongnBeautiful I completely agree with you! The writers put that show right into the toilet. I'm sure it frustrated the heck out of Valerie and the rest of them.
How did she not see what he was??
God Bless Valerie Harper.
Like most children I had never understood sarcasm when I was a boy. It had went over my head. The same with anyone who was assertive and very direct. So, after watching this show and other sitcoms, it gave me a distorted view of Americans and their wonderful lifestyle. I had assumed they were better than my demented relatives and mindless school friends.
Joe was cute, but he had alot of relationship/commitment issues. He was embittered. She acted so desperate to marry, and that clouded her judgement. Rhoda dated Johnny Fever from WKRP in Cincinnati! LOL. Rhoda should have been more cynical about Joe, as she was toward other men. They probably should have dated longer.Their marriage lasted only about 2 years.
I like when Rhoda and Brenda are living together... Rhoda is the calm one. And Brenda gets upset she wants to eat...It reminds me of myself. When I was growing up
that's exactly what I did....
RIP Howard Hesseman
18mins to 18mins :04 had me howling!
Kirk is from W . K . R . P . in Cinnatti named Johhnnie Fever !
thanks
Howard Hesseman from WKRP in Cincinnati and One Day at a Time.
Is that L. Music (Carlton) voice doing the thing about the opossum??
Yes.
Rhoda had to have this period in her life where she tried marriage. EVERYONE out there calls it a huge mistake - including the mostly-now-deceased network executives and some of the people who created the character of Rhoda. No. It was absolutely essential and imperative that Rhoda marry. It was a plot point. Then once it failed, she could return to doing what she did best - being single. Could there have been five seasons about Rhoda the Single Woman Back In New York After 10 Years in Minneapolis? Sure...but it wouldn't have been as interesting and it probably would've gotten stale a lot faster. "Rhoda", the show, got better after Joe was out of the picture. There was zero way they could've kept doing years of Rhoda and Her Pissed Off Husband Joe Who Had A Weakness For Younger Girls.
Garfield the cat is the doorman.
I just realized Mrs. Maisel used some of this SAME dialogue in season 1. 😲
Love the red.
I like Jello with whipped cream.
I thought only my Midwestern raised Grandmother served it that way.
RIP Howard Hessman...=((((((
Road is monologue is shades of Dolores when she goes out with David Bloom, and old boyfriend, while married to Joe.
That’s Dr. Johnny Fever
Rhoda was the best one
Tarrytown is now known as Sleepy Hollow.
YES!!! Dr Johnnny Fever's in the house!!!!!
Good for joe he wanted to take it slow
I managed to start 1/2 a dozen episodes in…. Joe may be a dish… in looks but his character , (even though through the process of divorce) , now stands out. By starting at episode 1….that Rhoda and he was not a great match. I would have like to see Rhoda have so more magic moments with a guy that brought some joy to her life. Val was such a dynamic classy lady.
I wish they never divorced
Great that they used the Jewish working class as the setting, same with one of my Mother's favorites "Bridget Loves Bernie"
If the first fight didn't do it ,this would have. She should have dumped him right then and there.
PONG!
I played it at home on an Atari 2600 !
I’m sorry - love the show but the laugh track is too loud. Talking is low then laugh track blasts. All streaming channels of this show comes thru mtmepisodes. Hey mtmepisodes haw about reducing the volume on the laugh track?! Where’s Normy Bates?
I just never cared for "Joe."
It's SO stupid!!! If a man thinks that someone ELSE wants you then he loves you and must have you!!! He should just see that you are the one to continue on with if he has any emotional feelings for you!!! Shouldn't need validation! Simple and honest.
But you know......."they" ( the writers) are showing the reality of this life......
@Joshua Swain you need to put an 'lol' or a wink at the end of that or someone might think you're an IDIOT. ;)
i feel the same...i couldnt eat a burger or chicken or lamb as you can hear at the zoo
I think the narrator on the TV show they were watching is actually the same man who voiced Carlton the doorman 🤔
Yup. Garfiled the cat, creator of The Bob Newhart Show and many many more things....
I always feel sad for Rhoda and her sister. They are adults but here they are living together in a bedsit, with their beds in the same room.
Pygiana why- u spoiled brat!
Pygiana u judgemental piece
I was thinking how much they (the two sisters) must enjoy each other to live so close like that. But I agree. I'd need my own bedroom.

Yep! WKRP in Cincinnati
Johnny Caravella?

I guess Rhoda doesn't keep kosher :)
Not since moving back to NY. Apparently her being Jewish wasn't a big deal since she moved back to be with more Jews lol You'd think the opposite wouldn't you? lol
Neither does Joe...
