Camp de la Transportation.
The prison of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni was the main penal establishment of French Guiana for a century. Some of the buildings were restored in the early 1980s.
The best true account of the French Guiana prison system was written by René Belbenoît. His book is the 'Dry Guillotine'. Because of the publication of his book, the prison transports finally stopped in 1938.
Correct, ways better text and historically correct description of the cruelty of the French penal system. Dry Guillotine was one of my favorite teenage books.
Correct I have a copy .
Amazing wow 😳 now that’s a prison where all the corrupt politicians should be put
I totally agree.
Thanks so much for this video from 🏴. I’ve read Papillon many times. I know I’ll never visit the place but I can see it thanks to you. 👍👍😀😀
Iv read it on multiple occasions also.Amazing book the best Iv ever read. Also helped me to get through a difficult time in my life.well actually not just once! A few times.ha! But honestly wow what a man! Don’t make them like that anymore that’s for sure.
@@thomascleland6982 it gives hope,why i love it
Papilon based on True story.. 👍🤫✌️😶🦋🦋🦋🍀
@shanemanchester Have you read Banco? It’s not as good as papillon but very good. He marries a woman who owns a motel. They marry and he helps run it.

Never ceases to amaze me what so called Civilised man go do to it's fellow man..WE condemended other Countries/Leaders yet here it is the proof ..
Nice resort to spend some happy vacation and have some good time. This is one of the numerous shames of this beautiful country named France. I can say it : I'm french..........
many countries, like mine also share disastrous history, its good that we know of them so we don't repeat. Merci mon ami
Agreed, we all have embarrassing episodes of history.
Evil france still causing havoc in Africa sahel
Let's also not forget, this place was on the Equator so it was guaranteed to be brutally hot year round.
These stories remind you what humans really capable of.

I know far out right?
Wow Papillon's name carved into the concrete amazing after all this time.
Most probably some tourist did it.
So scary inhuman place.... Very Good
Presentation...
What kind of hell on earth must that have been??
Typical how the French would like to forget this ever happened.
Happens everyday in Cuba, North Corea, Venezuela, China, Vietnam.
@@naranjamunicipal8047 Western Media is not to be trusted when it comes to those countries.
It Still Stands! Amazing!✨
That was not so long time ago. Like WW2
Would like to see a documentary interviewing the executioners from around the world talk to them their family members friends so on so forth
Arrived here after reading Papillon (again!). Despite the book apparently being a largely fictional account, I'd still love to visit this place. I'd be gobsmacked if the Papillon inscription in the cell is genuine though!
The film was great thank you...
The guards were probably also people that everybody wanted to get rid of
Thank you for this video!
His books are best ever story i read ever.. so good that i read them over 10 time and still i love read them more..i like saying to those dumb ass who trying discredit his book as it was not his life events or it was not true ..its absolutely doesn’t matter for me.. if you can try writing something like his book..
if you can’t so die from jealousy
An excellent presentation; well done!
Even by modern standards, even prisons in mainland France are notoriously brutal.
Prisoners (and innocents) across the globe are always treated badly. Shame...
I hate to be a downer here but Henri Charriere ( Papillion ) was said to have never been there. There are no official records of him ever being there. Most of his book was fiction or accounts from prisoners who were actually there
Yes, there are records of Charrière being transported to the penal colony, French Guiana. However, there are zero records of Charrière ever being on Devil's Island. Devil's Island is just a tiny island and it is incorrect to call the whole penal colony that, rather the whole penal colony was French Guiana.
@@boink800 I also saw that a 102 year old French man who claimed for years..even on his death bed that the book was mostly about him...not Charriere. Who knows?
@@johnmalerba804 You would next need to read René Belbenoît's book, The Dry Guillotine. Charrière 'borrowed' many stories from that book for his own book.
Life was much different then folks
Life was, not human morals or emotions or basic humanity … common sense. Saying “it was back then” doesn’t excuse atrocities of humans, since human BRAINS NEVER CHANGED, they could think as we do now….
I really wanted to watch this it looked so good the video but the audio accompanying this is absolutely unbearable Id rather have done time in the prison on French Guiana .
than listen to it .
@zingaraMafiosa 🍯
Reportage très intéressant, merci. 🌹
Wow they cleaned it up
just watched the new movie.... good, but not as good as the original.
i really must read the book again.
Gav Tatu just finished the book. There are so many details that would never fit in a movie
@@gabegarcia382 i have, the rest is just as mad, lol !
Gav Tatu yes it is lol
@@gabegarcia382 i meant read the book again, it has been many many years.
Gav Tatu reading it at the moment
The pimp killer’s story was indeed a bit fishy but it exists as a chronicle of the time and that is no bad thing.
Why is killing a pimp a bad thing?
the soundtrack is terrible..
All prisons should look like this. Here in the U.S. they are like bring in the holiday Inn. If they looked like a hellish nightmare like French Guyana or like Nazi concentration camps and soviet gulogs where we could dispose of the unruly garbage in society the world would be a better place!
Yeah we tried that and it didn’t work.
I guess your one of them mr perfect
The concentraton camps were not for criminals but for an innocent group of people that the Nazis wanted to erase
Very informative
Again I say why do you have the titles/comments of instruction flashing on and off. No one can read them in a split second!!!!
I Read more than 15 times. just have started again suddenly you tube suggested this video 😊
Beautiful location with horrible memories.
Ya. Just imaging the length of just one day in that kind of paradox for the simplist of crimes. Well, for some.
@@Ari-pw6nu you know it.
That was under British rule.
Today theres US colonial imperlistic rule. Hopefully its soon on its way out too..😉
so super to see this,,,,,,, Papillon............
Without this music. I can
Watching the movie and youtubing it at the same time .. LOL
Traduction or subtitles pleaseeeee!!!!!
Papillon 🦋 Papillon
Thanks infographics show
Tres bonne film!
This place should be tourist attraction like cellular jail in Port blair
Who wants to spend the night here.....alone?
Worse yet, with hundreds of stinky guys.
Without this music. I can. 😅
There should be an end to solitary confinement in America. It's a form pf torture.
What are these places used for now?
Youre head silly hahaha
A Trump Theme park.
Is this music from Pappilon?
No. The sound track to the movie is fantastic.
Someone would ask if there are more unbearable, cruel and now existing penitentiaries in the world...
Anybody After papillon movie.⚠️?

Audio is terrible!
no wonder papi got outta there,,,brutal
Intersting but the English text is hard to read and certainly needs some imagination :)
The music is terrible WTF
Papillion was never at Devils Island, his book is a made up story. The movie with Steve McQueen, however, is epic.
Devil's Island was only a very tiny part of the whole penal colony, French Guiana. Yes, it is completely documented that Charrière was transported to the French Guiana penal colony.
I haven't see the #2 papillon but u are not going to get a better movie with stars like steeve and 2 co star yest like 3:10 to Yuma with Glen Ford and helfin it was good with the Australian movie star now the best star on the present even that he is getting old but is no body else Kirk Douglas semi retired and with cancer I'm glad that he beat. The cancer no body is going to be as good as Burt Lancaster ,Tony Curtis, and Steve maquin, jack balance, there 1 in a million

Shameful France shame on you
Best BGM I like it
W.T.H.!!🧐🧐🧐🧐🧐

Wiooooooo
Smelling like anything, that's why they discovered perfume and mouth washers, because they smell like nothing
È tutto ristrutturato
.
This “music” on your videos about this place, ruins the videos. Borderline unwatchable… jussayin
ع
Terrible music.
One of my favorite movies and the book is even better and no music is not frome the movie makes it erie though
If he ever was there and given the tough disciplinary measures the prison was claimed to impliment for such minor things I doubt he would've dug his name in his cell so visibly lol, a little P where no-one would see maybe, Hollywood huh
Papillion is a liar ..it was not him ..he took someone else's story and made it his own
He may be lier but The story was very impressed to me
he wasnt,, becouse he result being a inmate , so how he survive?
Dino Dino this is something we will never really know! I think some of his story is true, some embellished, some taken from others!
Dino Dino you're right. The real Papillon calls René Belbenoit and he lives in Brazil after escape from Devils Island with others 8 fugitives. Henri Charriere not is the real Papillon, but he is the one of 8 fugitives... He decide not follow René Belbenoit to Brazil, going to Venezuela.
Henri Charriere receive from René Belbenoit the manuscrit to send for a american jornalist... but Henri decide passing by Papillon wishing some money.
The real Papillon, René Belbenoit, lives in Brazil in Roraima state. He died in 70's and was sepulted in brazilian land.
All the information was registred in a brazilian federal police investigation.
But it exposed the terrible system dino..
There's no record of him being in that prison. A third of his book he plagiarized. He's a fraud.
BULLSHIT! Where have you been?
There is record of him at st laurent, but there is no record of him being at Devils island. Devils island isn't in this video.
Your a fraud!
While there is consensus beyond "Papillon epingle" or the " 4 truths of Papillon ", or Alexander Miles...there is also consensus that the book is a piece of Literary ART that is as good as all the writters of France, including DUMAS, Anatole france, etc, etc. Every time i read the book (plagiriazed facts or not) the book is alive ! It says that a common criminal can make such a piece of literature is beyond comprehension. I read it every year and is diferent. One of the books of the century. It sold millions of copies. What a tremendous achivement. Not documentary like Belbenoit but inmortal literature.
