    Camp de la Transportation.
The prison of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni was the main penal establishment of French Guiana for a century. Some of the buildings were restored in the early 1980s.

The best true account of the French Guiana prison system was written by René Belbenoît. His book is the 'Dry Guillotine'. Because of the publication of his book, the prison transports finally stopped in 1938.

It says that a common criminal can make such a piece of literature is beyond comprehension. I read it every year and is diferent. One of the books of the century. It sold millions of copies. What a tremendous achivement. Not documentary like Belbenoit but inmortal literature.
