its actually the opposite, its easier to bond with people because your peers treat you like family. There's a lot less awkwardness and distance that would trigger social anxiety.

Transformation That’s not the same thing?? No one is going to be in England and say to a native “wow you speak English very well!” But they’d say to a foreigner they interact with, “you speak English well. Do you live here? How long have you studied?” It’s country specific because you’re not going to go up to someone who’s spoken a language their whole life and tell them that they speak it well.

This happened one time when I lived in Japan that was really funny. It was on a night out in Osaka, we passed by this park and there was this group of kids hanging out (like high school seniors) and they stopped us to talk and tell us we were pretty and they wanted to drink with us (not even legal lmao) and then someone asked me who was the hottest in the group and i felt so much pressure lol, so I picked one. then they were like "ok, ok, pick the second hottest" and i was just so stressed thinking "why are they doing this to me??" and picked another one, and then everyone started laughing. so I was like "what's wrong?" and someone said "they're twins" XD

Can you make a video about Koreans reacting to different cultural habits? Like for example, explaining to them that westerners would never ask "who is more attractive me or him", and to react to USA's beauty standards and self love. I'm from Europe but I think the USA point of view on beauty would be more interesting for a video because I don't think the self love concept is as strong in Europe (or at least it's not as strong in the countries I've lived in!). It'd be interesting to know what Koreans think of cultures that are so much less focused about looks. Also, beauty icons: some USAbeauty icons like Kim K or Beyonce compared to Korean beauty icons. The standards are very different, so what do they think about that? I'm again talking about USA not Westerners in general because 1) it would be too much of a broad topic and 2) Europe for example is somewhat of a mix of beauty standards: not so loose as the USA, not so strict as Korea and Eastern Asia. And I don't know much about beauty standards in other continents so I don't feel entitled to talk about that, but maybe another video about Koreans reacting to Celebs who are beauty icons in various countries could be nice? Maybe also with other foreigners who could point out which celebs are more popular in their country!

Diana S Americans are not about self love. We are selfish & insecure who pretend to have it together. We have zero connection with our cultures. Family values are a rare sight in the US because most families consists of single mother households. Koreans are way more in tune with self love even if they are consumed with being beautiful as well. Culturally rich and the family unit is strong here.

When u r asked by Koreans "Who do u think is more attractive him or me", just keep in mind that for Koreans its a very innocent question, kind of like not a big deal and they dont get offended or insulted in a way Americans do. I know it sounds contradictory because yes Korea is a leader in plastic surgery industry however those kind of questions are asked in a very innocent way without intention to insult or bring somebody down. That is one of the Paradoxes in Korean Culture. In the same way in the US with its more than 100 years of talking about Racism and Tolerance yet still people tend to make racist statements towards each other. Sounds Paradox to me. I guess we are talking about the Perception, the Words are used by Americans and Koreans are the same but Perception is different. So again, both you and I can use the same Words and Slang but have different meanings and Intentions behind, u know what i mean? After all Meghan i have to say that i am absolutely amazed by You acepting and blending in to Korean Culture! All i wish is that Korean Culture and people will pay you back, love for love, thats all that this World needs!

    Hello
I totally agree with those things
Working in a bar in korea for about a year those awkward situations happen a lot like comparing beauty or who can drink more/drinks best
I learned to get used to most of those situations
But the ones that invade my privacy like touching are still difficult and i might never get used to it
Or even being one of the youngest workers i am their "maknae"like they like to call me to joke around
anyway so my coworkers will ask me a lot to do something like go buy them cigarettes or get that knife from the kitchen etc at 1st i was like wait i dont smoke....why would i go 0.o,
or you are standing next to the kitchen door...~.~
Luckily i am not the only foreign worker so if we are buy or selves we will just do rock paper Scissors 가위 바위 보
And group is important so they grew to like a family , and are still caring
The group is important like ,and when you give they will usually give back as much if not more
And i am grateful that i had such a nice working environment for my 1st year in korea
(Ps when you work in korea you kind of need to show you are dedicated or atleast are grateful for the job you have si you are expected to work hard and give your all )
Thank if you read this little long testimony until the end
And thanks Megan Bowen you are a big inspiration

megan you should have another vid with koreans and discuss things they misunderstand about foreigners and give them answers and you share questions with them foreigners have and have them give their own answers to it. You teach us so much , i think it would be cool to see the perspective straight from them

Love your channel! I think it is awesome that you not only speak another language fluently, but you also live there long term! A lot of Americans have a bad reputation, I think, for not knowing any languages but English. I took some Spanish in college (yay, I can read a menu, lol), but I've recently been trying to learn Korean. Learning Hangul stretches my brain :). Learning a completely different alphabet is really broadening my horizons (and hopefully staving off dementia, and stuff.) Anyway, love your insights! Keep it up :)

The first thing happened to me. I was in Itaewon and a group of guys (I think there were 5 or so) asked who of them was more handsome. I just randomly pick one who was in the middle (looked kind of cute to me) and all the other guys were shocked lol I guess he wasn't the one considered attractive in the group, so I didn't regret my answer ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

Another awesome video Megan, really like your insight into Korean culture. I was wondering if you could do a video about words that exist in Korean but don’t have a direct translation in English, not sure if you have done one before. It’s always interesting when languages have words that seem to be suited to that culture and they just don’t exist in other languages.

  • @sayrah6716
    @sayrah6716 6 лет назад +1

that first one is toooooooooo real, the last time it happened when I was out in Incheon with my friends we got like adopted by a group of Korean guys who were super friendly, sharing soju with us, we were all just chatting and having a good time then they were like "each of you pick the three most handsome guys" so all of us had to (it was lowkey funny though because we picked different since we all have different taste/preferences.) but yah, it's pretty common, it's happened to me or my friends at least 4-5 times here.

That second thing doesn't make sense at all!!!!!!!!!! I think they're surprised because, as you said, that is not that much foreign in Korea that speaking Korea, and also, is a difficult language. so...is not because you live in the country that you're going to be fluent in that language. I lived in the USA for one year to learn English and of courseeee, I' m not fluent, if you' re fluent in some language is because you' ve studied very hard, doesn't matter if you live or not in the country.

Oh my gosh, I appreciate this video so much! Haha. I can totally relate to all the things you said, but especially the impromptu speech thing and always being the one picked to do stuff because you’re the foreigner. It is so stressful to me! I’m self conscious about speaking in Korean enough, why you gotta make me get up and speak in a foreign language in front of a bunch of people without even having the chance to prepare! Gah! That one is going to take a really long time to get used to for me.
