  • Peeling pearl onions can be tricky. Los Angeles Times Test Kitchen chef Noelle Carter shows how to quickly peel these tiny onions in four easy steps. More cooking tips and tricks: bit.ly/1aPq03u
    1. Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil. While water is heating up, trim the end off each onion opposite the root end.
    2. Place onions in the boiling water and let boil for about a minute to loosen the skin, then drain in a colander.
    3. Drain the onions, then submerge them in an ice water bath to stop the cooking and cool them so they're easy to handle.
    4. Once onions are cool enough to handle, pinch one side of the onion and the delicious center will pop out, leaving behind the skin.

It's true-you don't cry while popping them. I had to sometimes cut off the tip of the onion and peel but it was one motion. Thank you for your clear, easy instructions! saved me an hour!

I was multitasking and forgot to trim the onions before I put them in the boiling water. Nonetheless, it was quick work. I used a pair of little scissors/kitchen snips, after I boiled the pearl onions briefly and chilled them. Excellent solution. Highly recommend this procedure.

Can't you simply put them in two large stainless steel bowls one inverted (like garlic) and shake?

This worked great, but wondering if I'm still doing something wrong? The onion pops out, but there is still the thickest outer piece of onion attached to the paper. Only 2-3 out of 8oz released all the onion, which seems a bit wasteful. I cooked 2 minutes...is this just the way it works? Thanks!

Or just buy a regular onion like a regular person! They taste the same, why go through the effort? Because they're boushy?

Hot water destroys onion taste. Bad Chef! Dumbest approach. Balche it in cold water for 10 minutes and peel.
