My Dad ordered one of these cars as a soccer mom car. Now, mind you, my Dad owned auto shops. Our Skylark survived two teenage, learning to drive, kids, and my Mom, who was described by my friends as a "Stock car racer." We all drove that car with the accelerator to the floor. It had Buick's 301, which a Nova with a straight 6 could smoke (personal experience). But, that car went 550K+ miles without any major engine work other than water pumps and alternators..... We put a rebuilt transmission in, after I bottomed out the car, doing 70mph, trying to get some air, over the top of a hill. The impact put a hairline fracture in the case and when cold, a high pressure stream of fluid sprayed on the exhaust: smoke everywhere! Yeah, shrugging my shoulders and attesting, "I don't know what happened Dad, it just started doing that," went over like a fart at church. I will tell you this, a car built in 77 shouldn't go more than 300K mi's. Yes, my Dad changed the fluids religiously. We owned it from new till 1992. Once it hit 300K and Dad decided to put the transmission in, he wanted to keep it on the road till the wheels fell off. Well, he traded it in on a Buick Regal when a hint of blue smoke emerged from the tailpipe, upon a cold start...….. That Regal didn't go so well for Pop's: my Dad owned big block cars all through the 60's and 70's. He even bought an 79 LaSaber because he wasn't going to drive a wimpy six cylinder, as GM had announced all the economy tech they'd put into cars including elimination of many engines. He had to have nothing smaller than a 350 for himself. A few years later he bought a Mercury with a 4.6 and still owns it to this day...… Yeah, over 400K on that car. It's all about maintenance and finding the right combination of engine and transmission.

You meant a Pontiac 301. There was no Buick 301 engine.

When I was a teen we had the 4-door model with a bench seat in front….not a Landau….in that sort of slate blue color.
It was my car to drive in high school and was the location of many memories for my gf and I when I was a senior, who is my wife after decades of separation between then and now. (That back seat wasn’t very comfortable but it was fine for certain activities 😉).
It was my car for a few years after high school as well.

Back in 1989, my first car was a 77 Buick Skylark 4-door with the 231 ci V6. My girlfriend at the time had a 78 Omega 4-door with a V-8.

We would have on the VIN: 4 for Buick, B for Skylark, 27 for two door coupe, Y for 301 Pontiac 2 barrel "L27" engine, 7 for 1977 model year, X for Fairfax, KS assembly and the rest is the production sequence.

X body GM, here in the midwest most of these became lunch for the tin worm.
Skylark, Appolo, Omega and the Ventura have always been overlooked compared to the Nova.

I have a 4 door Custom edition 78 also here in Norway. Perfect condition , no rust , road legal drag race car . All original parts in heated storage. ( Easy turnback to stock if so desired ) I do not think there is many left in europe at all. Maybe 10 cars total ? Bought my car in 1988.

    • @MrDavalli3
      @MrDavalli3 5 лет назад

@@ClassicRideSociety that kills me lol. I hope that price was based primarily on the overall condition of the car, and the folks buying it. At some point, I'd like to sell mine and come out on top, even if by just a little. This is be my first four wheeled vehicle project. It's already in pretty great shape, but I've got some pretty minimal plans for it, that will hopefully provide maximum aesthetic improvement.

@@MrDavalli3 I believe that since at a public auction and it was a non runner, it wasn't going to get that much. Plus the winning bidder also had to pay extra fees so they have to keep that in mind. If that had been sold privately, it probably would have fetched a little more

Wasn't the X bodies the Citation fwd platform?,this is the Nova rwd platform, also noticed the rear bumper energy absorbing shocks have been pushed in, must've been slightly rear ended.

Definitely gonna go shy of 2 grand, but over $1000. Not a bad buy for a car that's not a rust bucket rat hotel.
I do like these late 70s GM luxury cars, much like the Cadillac Seville of this time period!
The missing radio reminds me of the days when thieves would steal radios from cars. You'd want a radio that detaches from the car to bring inside your house ^^

You stayed on the VIN long enough for me to see "Y7X". That tells us it's a 301 Pontiac 2 barrel engine. Don't be fooled under the hood. Back then on the 301 2 barrel and other small V8s of the time, GM used a Quadrajet housing, but permanently sealed off the secondaries. So it looks like a Q-jet, but it's only a Dualjet. The Y means 301 2 barrel Pontiac V8. This engine was used through 1979 on various GM cars. There was a 4 barrel "W" VIN code version that was used from 1978 to 1981 and eventually became the base engine for the Trans Am. The 7 means 1977 and the X should be Fairfax, KS assembly. The cowl tag tells 1977 (77) that it's a Skylark 2 door Landau (4XB27), it was made in Fairfax, KS (K), it has a white interior (11R), the buckets appear to be original (A51), it was white originally (11L) and the white vinyl top is also original (11T). It was made in the fourth week of August 1976 (08D). I'm guessing between $650 and $800.

Hope someone snatches her up. It is the kissing cousin to the Nova's /Omega's of the time, so most of the parts are interchangeable minus a few odds and ends. Buckets are sweet option also. Im guessing 1200 as to the price.

  • @jeff0547

The word NOVA stands for, Nova, Omega, Ventura and Apollo. All of GM's X-bodies.

  • @billbowers268

I had a 77 Nova 2 door, mine was the reverse of this car...almost. it was red (Firethorn) outside and tan (Camel?) inside. But except for a few tiny bits of chrome and wood...EXACTLY the same inside.
Like you, I think that the Landau roof on these look like crap, though I suppose when this car was new it was a sweet looking car.
When I bought my Nova it was because I wanted a GM car, but with the engine being a "match" to the nameplate. IOWs a Chevrolet with a Chevy engine. Found a Pontiac with an Olds engine, an Olds with a Buick engine, and a Buick...forget which engine it had, but the car was an ugly deep purple color.
These drive/drove decently, but for their length they have ridiculous rear seats (bottom cushions are about 2/3rds normal length) and small/shallow trunks.
If it were available, I would go for the 78 or 79 Pontiac Phoenix, the only truly interesting version of X-body. Or a 75-76 Chevy Concours.
