There is a whole entire science behind bio-mechanics. Just like how pro-athletes study how to get "optimial" performance, so do pro musicians. Every "body" is different, which means your answer to how high your seat should be, or the distance your seat should be at, will differ from person to person. If you're going pro, get the answers from people like Dr. Chong. I of course, could only give you my experience. Let me know your thoughts. Would love to hear them! Paul

Thank you very much Paul. The lady I go to for my playing lesson tells me to keep my feet in front, and I see that you have one under the bench. I have a big problem with the fact that while playing, I tighten my diaphragm and abdominal muscles very much. I try to control it consciously, but in a moment I find myself very tense. Sometimes it hurts so much and I have to stop playing. Unfortunately, we do not have such a doctor and I have no idea how to deal with it. Regards.

I had to re-learn how to sit at the piano because I too was taught the wrong way. I made a video about this a while back; ruclips.net/video/eFd9ERblaM0/видео.html

@@Jazzmentl That's what I saw and that's what my comment is for this movie. I will try to write down your tips. Thank you very much. Tomorrow I am starting to watch another portion of your films. They are great :)

Thank you so much for this information, Paul. Posture is important in anything we do for long periods. Learning safe technique early is so important, both to avoid injury and so as not to ingrain bad habits.
I notice during that demonstration following your explanation that your left foot is further forward, not right under the bench. Is that because you were playing more quietly, rather than with maximum power?
I suffered a permanent neck injury, in large part from years cycling "in the drops". The error was craning my neck to look down the road while my torso was bent forward over the bars. Despite having had several bike fit sessions over the years, no one ever told me that was incorrect until after numbness and pain in my arms had taken me right off the bike. Now I'm trying to get back with correct posture keeping my head in a more neutral position and looking "up" with my eyes in order to see forward. But it's a struggle breaking a long, long habit.
May a great many pianists, both new and experienced, avoid injury thanks to your instruction, Paul! Thanks again for doing this.

No, not really. Just into the music and I tend to get lost in it and my legs go where they want. However you should always do your best to have your right leg forward and your left leg underneath the bench. This will give you much more power when you need it.

I’ve never played jazz, my mother wasn’t a fan, but I’d love to start learning pieces. I have played the piano for years. Do you have a few recommendations?
