Actually, rather than having too much fuel, the pump has air in it. When it was filled, air was let into the pump, (centrifugal pumps don't like this very much) which just stirs the air around. When you open that valve, you are allowing the pump to pull the diesel up into the impeller, and then the pump can pull the liquid through.
This is what is known as priming the pump.

It's called priming the pump. Keep running it dry like that and you'll have to replace it.

Filter expert here, thats a water drain tap, the fitter separates water from the diesel and that tap is to drain off the water from the trap portion of the filter, so hes not wasting anything and that tap should be turned after every hour or two of that pump running prefferably as there is no secondary storage bowl.

I love how instead of taking your son to A day care or something You decide to take him to work to see what it's like to be a trucker the trucker and he can have the real experience So he knows how to be a trucker if he wants to I really wish I was as lucky as this kid 💙

For those of you wondering, thats a diesel fuel trap, it takes all the bad particulates in rhe diesel (yes there is some in diesel) and puts it conviniently in a small trap that can be emptied (like the video shows)

It’s the heat. Cause the fuel to caper a bit and locks up the pump. Happens at our shop too. Put some kind of cover over it and it will help.

pump is designed to pump fluids and doesnt have the seals to pump air. So it just spins on the same pocket of air. aka air locked pump.
