I do earn a small amount money from amazon affiliate links if purchases are made, but with NO extra cost to you. This does not create incentive to make videos like this. My goal is to make reliable, honest, plant content viewers can trust. -Chris Развлечения
Greed, Scams. So very sad, again how something so wonderful can be taken over by such ugliness. Thank you for putting the spotlight on this.
Well said. Thanks for watching, Wanda!
I have had my home grown rare plant Etsy shop for a year and a half now and its been very successful and Im still loving it! i have many loyal customers and I bust my ass to go above and beyond for each one of them. There are still good shops on there- you just have know where to look and shop with people who have solid reputations.
I have purchased plants on Etsy four times and got ripped off 3 times. Never again.
Keep doing these videos!!! I LOVE THEM ❤
Glad you like them! I will :)
I’d love to hear your opinion on what Etsy should have/should be doing? Obviously fees became ridiculous. I’ve heard this from some small sellers I know. What’s the balance? Growth, protection, fees. That would be interesting and drive some great conversation.
I would have a much stricter vetting process of sellers. Government IDs of owners, EIN information, tax documents, applicable sellers permits, and business history. More hoops to jump through to become a seller. And once the sellers make it through, take care of them. Support them, teach them, and make sure they make it. Their success is your success, and they will be loyal to the platform.
That would limit the amount of post purchase issues their support teams are dealing with, leading to a better experience for the buyers, and more repeat buying. And they'd be able to keep fees lower...or even the same, and drive more sales with ad fees. We used to do 80% revenue on Etsy, 20% on our site. Now it's 5% & 95% our site.
Also, enforcing the 'Handmade' policy, instead of the platform merging into an eBay / Amazon of sorts, where items from Aliexpress and Temu are consistently dropshipped. That's exactly what made Etsy different from Amazon.
This is true across Etsy. I have had an Etsy shop (selling artwork) for several years and it has gotten insane over the last few years.
I have bought vintage clothes from a few different stores on Etsy with good results but then I found the sellers on IG first and had an established relationship with them.
I have bought plants with good results but again, I’m careful. Only shop US sellers and I read reviews. I’ve not bought anything too expensive; mainly just little things that are fairly common.
I didn't know, and I got scammed a few weeks ago. Luckily I paid with paypal and got my money back. I tried to buy an albo node. Now I get it from a lady in my neighbourhood whom I discovered on marketplace, and I can directly go to her house and see the plants.
Overall, I’ve had good experiences with Etsy but a few times it was clear I was sold plants that were being resold from big box stores. I paid twice as much as I needed to. It was wasteful and annoying.
Not a big deal but I stopped buying from Etsy after a few rounds of this and decided to purchase plants locally (even if it meant driving up to 2 hours one way).
I’ll still check them for specific plants but they’re almost always overpriced.
Love it though when there’s a weird plant available being sold by a someone that love plants like I do. I’ve enjoyed those interactions/purchases a lot.
Agreed! Etsy used to be an awesome place to get plants, but its hard for vendors to price competitively when fees and shipping are so high :/
I’ve bought many plants from Etsy. I have three good sellers and I get plants that are not grown locally very cheap. Two sellers never responded and Etsy acted promptly and refunded my money. Once you have a good seller, stick with it.
Agreed! I've had a great experience with more than 1 seller. One of them was bullied of the platform, lucky for me he also uses Ebay so I can still buy from him. I haven't been looking for variegated popular plants, have seen plenty of fishy ads come by, looks like a mine field if you want a variegated Alocasia for example
I really dig your editorial style videos. So cool
Hey thank you! 😊🤗
I can absolutely relate to this video as a buyer and seller. I've bought many plants from Etsy and have mostly had good experiences, but I've certainly noticed the changes over the past few years. As a jewelry seller with a small shop, the fees absolutely impact my ability to earn a real profit. I have to spend as much as I make just to get "noticed" on Etsy because of all of their algorithm and marketing changes.
Thanks for the info!
Any time, Carol!!
I got scammed a couple times and tried so hard to get refunded or made whole by Etsy. I wont but anything from Etsy again.
Me too. I quit buying from them.
Idk, if it's the time of year or what, but my local groups have insane deals. People are listing great variegated rooted Florida Beauty cuttings for $40. Many did not sell. People are listing $60 beautiful Monstera Albo rooted cuttings, and they aren't selling fast, but some did sell. I used to love Etsy years ago, but yep, just another junk site now.
I've bought alot plants on esty and it's been 50/50. There's a popular seller in Spokane Washington that has scammed me twice! Esty has definitely declined..during the pandemic the quality was way better.
My girlfriend has a plant addiction, we've spent some serious coin on Etsy plants (succulents mostly) 😅
hahahaha yup that's how it goes!
I have bought 2 olants on etsy and yes i agree etsy which i have been going to constantly since almost the beginning has definitely blurred the lines on handmade and what not to amost looking like amazon... its very frustrating and when i do find something i have to look at there store and reviews so see what they sell and if they buy wholesale and resell. Its very annoying
I tried to open an Etsy shop (Not plants). I put weeks into research, preparation, creating inventory. Only to have Etsy shut my store down night one with zero reason given. The only response I got is "it can take 7-10 business days for customer service to research the problem and get back to you". WTAF? So Etsy can shut your store down no reason indefinitely, not give you any opportunitiies to fix any problems etc. Meantime you lose any possible chance of income. They got back to me in 2 weeks saying by store was now open again. No reason given, no explanation nothing. I never even finished uploading my inventory because why bother.
That means someone made a complaint against your store.
@@hennesseyme9112 the fact that Etsy doesn't tell you that or give you a chance to defend yourself is utter bs. When I asked then why after they reopened it they still refused to tell me why do I don't even know for sure that's what happened. It was my designs my artwork, my hand work. Any random jealous person afraid of competition can derail your store and your income at any time. Proved to me etsy is BS so I didn't bother.
I get most of my plants from Etsy but I have been scammed a few times on there.
I buy and sell on etsy all the time, have not had many issues
This is gold 🔥
Thank you!!!!
wow what a shame Etsy, that was clearly bad leadership and greed.
💯
Yeah, I'm a fairly new etsy seller - 48, disabled, and just need to make some side money, but it's really hard w every rich person able to buy mass quantities of nursery plants, and my site w its maybe 2-5 plants, and only maybe 2 or 3 of those maybe 5 maximum plants is kind of a joke! I'm trying tho! I could sell locally, but I'm not a member of the local social club, cause I dont spend all my damn time on the facebook page! I love plants- and have for 30yrs - this is what I've wanted to do w my life - sell beautiful plants! AND then seeing all these hard to find plants suddenly at every big box store is killing me even more!! I might as well just keep the 4 baby monstera thai constellations I have, cause soon they'll be at Lowes for $20. I'm pissed and heartbroken. I'll still love the greenhouse I'm building all the same, but I'm not gonna earn the money back for what I've put into trying to make my business now that everything is so easily tissue cultured.. oh well..
Literally just had this same thought about the exact same plant 😭. I tried not to let it deter me, easier said than done though! I share the same dream and it sucks to walk into Walmart and see Thai cons and pink princesses piled up on the shelves lol. I feel like the easiest way to recuperate funds and differentiate ourselves is to grow them out and sell mature plants. Just hate how long that would take 🥲.
Unfortunately, limit your purchases to long time, high sales #'s AND high review #'s. If any of tge 3 is missing, move along.
Truuuuuue
It's the US way... Greed and money control everything here and I don't see that ever changing, unfortunately 😢
I still like Etsy for the selection of vintage, custom, handmade, and oddball items that one just can't find anywhere else. I still buy plants from Etsy sellers too. I'm dismayed by the greed, executive compensation, and mistreatment of sellers by Etsy. That seems to be the reality with almost any corporation. While their marketing campaign may have been uninspired, your comment about "only grandmas saw the commercial" hit a nerve with me. Pretty sure that commercial was played right here on RUclips.
Hello I’m in Australia, I bought some seeds and I never received them.
Can you recommend me a place to buy seed, bulbs or corms?
This is why I closed my shop. I was a tiny plant shop that sold uncommon houseplants that I started and grew myself. They would withhold my money for 6 weeks and explained that I had to big of an increase in sales. Really $200 is a huge increase. I never got all my money at one time. Paid for advertising and struggled to get over 100 sales in a year. Left with my 5 star rating and now sell locally on marketplace.
This is unfortunately a common story for Etsy sellers. Lots of awesome little plant shops got burned on the platform, and likely won't go back. It seems like a product of the pandemic :/
I recently open an ETSY plant shop and got shut down with no reason, I’ve shipped out my plants and ETSY get full refund for customer on my credit card…
thank you for sharing the story !
Interested in plantellation, you show the shop when mentioning scammers, what is your experience? I just made a purchase
Watch our previous video from the week before
So, how do you find a reputable seller and make sure that they actually get the profit without being tricked? Is there a platform thay small plant sellers use now?
I recommend finding small companies , and cross reference them on multiple sites and reviews to check they are legit. There's lots of little ecom plant shops that have built their own sites in the last few years!
i tried to by things from etsy and all of them were scams
I’ve purchased 6 plants this year on Etsy along with a few different types of seeds, leaf cuttings and some tissue cultures. Had great experiences with every shop, I did receive one wrong plant but was refunded within a couple days.
That's awesome! I love to hear this
@@prettyingreen thanks I’m hoping to add one of your plants to my collection soon
My parents say I can not buy plants off of etsy😢
Probably best for now! Unless a shop has lots of reviews and sales. Use the "contact" button and just check they're legit!
@@prettyingreen well I guess,I got a Thai constellation cutting
@@prettyingreen I also was wondering when you can come to Montreal
I got scammed by a cheap Sri Lanka scammer, and I left a review and now a lot of people are asking me questions cause they also bought from them. ⚠️ PLEASE READ: If you are buying from Etsy and from the us, please filter it so it’s from the us only and make sure to check all reviews!⚠️
This is SUPER important. I need to do an exposé on the Sri Lankan scammers on Etsy and eBay..but want to be careful with the broad strokes
I saw this aswell, there was a store that grew so quickly and sold cheap cutting of expensive plants. I was going to buy at the time but if it is too good to be true, it likely is!
😢
😌
Have you heard of earth and jungle?
I haven't
I was scammed by them
