I'll start off by saying David Robinson was a great HOF center, a tremendous athlete and a class act. He ran the floor as well any big ever, was a great leaper, strong upper body and moved around the court gracefully. He had a good first step with a decent handle for a center, soft touch within 15 feet, had a solid hook shot and was a great finisher off the break. He blocked shots effortlessly and was pretty good at grabbing boards on the offensive end. And I'll say he had all of that to start out his career. But here's the other side of the coin with the Admiral...he never expanded his post game and was pretty predictable come playoff time. He didn't have strong hands so he was vulnerable to having ball poked out of his hands on the drive and in the post. And he didn't have good lower body strength (skinny thighs and hips) and can be pushed out of position in the post. So teams just pushed out him out of the paint and made him make 15 footers in the '95 and '96 playoff losses. He never had a HOF guard on his team during his prime who can close out games...unlike Shaq, Russell, Kareem, Wilt and Duncan.
Finding Rockets games in the 84-95 seasons convinces me they were a third world country until 1997 when Barkley joined them. Barkley was a bonified star ⭐. Hakeem was just some good African in the NBA
The 90-94 Spurs had some quality team players behind David Robinson in Rod Strickland, Terry Cummings, Dale Ellis, Sean Elliot, Willie Anderson, Dennis Rodman, Antoine Carr, Vinnie Microwave Johnson, Vinny Del Negro etc... 90 second round out in 7 full games vs 90 WC Champion 🏆 Blazers, 91 out in first round vs 91 Warriors of Run TMC, 92 out in first round vs Suns (No Robinson in postseason), 93 out in 6 games second round vs Phoenix Suns of Barkley, Chambers & KJ, and in 94 bitch slapped by 94 Jazz in first round... They had the same philosophical and superficial make-up of the Duncan era Spurs just didn't work having a top 5 league player captain vs Jordan, Hakeem, Karl Malone & Barkley as it did vs SHAQ, Webber, Nowitzki, Rasheed Wallace and Steve Nash and Kobe in the 2000's into 2010's.... Robinson zero rings from 90-98, Duncan and Robinson two rings from 99-03, Duncan three rings from 04-17 or whenever Duncan retired, 14-17 with Duncan and Leonard, 05-07 with Duncan, Parker & Ginobili Ginobili a type of Willie Anderson, Del Negro, player Parker a sorta Strickland, AJ, type player Duncan a Robinson, Cummings, Rodman type player Robinson a Duncan type player but more explosive 🧨 Leonard, Elliot, Anderson, Stephen Jackson, Rodman, Carr, Microwave Johnson, Ellis all the same type players interchangeably utilized... Even had McGrady and Steve Smith at points .... Derek and Willie Andersons.. same formula for near three decades Lamarcus Aldridge Jerome Kersey I can keep going. Malik Rose, Will Perdue... Size, round rebounding bodies, wings for 3 and D, some penetrating point guards, creative flashy shooting guards at good height 6'5"-6'7" 5 rings in near 30 years of consistent formula... With Duncan and Robinson arguably the best to top 5 to top 15-20 players in the league at different times.... It has to be considered though Duncan and Robinson the two best players they have ever had and 3rd best being Gervin and then Leonard .. everybody else were nice helpers to those superstars... And Gervin is arguably still no. 1 cuz he was the Spurs first franchise player that carries massive weight cuz he gave them identity first. He is their George Washington, Louviture, Albizu Campos Simon Bolivar etc ...
I feel bad for David Robinson, I think the 95 playoffs really hurt his standing. A lot of people don`t realize he and Hakeem were neck and neck as Centers from 89-93. There`s this misconception sometimes that Dream was light years above him base d on that series. Ahhh the beauty of the Golden Age of Centers. I don`t think I will EVER see the great interior play of the 1990s again.
@daishi83 Not really because Olajuwon led twice in reb's and we all know abt the blocks Hakeem had. DR MVP '95 and Dream destroyed him. DR DPoY '92 Hakeem was injured (look it up). Robinson didn't have more All NBA 1st teams cuz hakeem occupied them. Also Hakeem dominated both '80s and '90s, DR just '90s so no Malone, Kareem, old Parish, old Daugherty, old Eaton.

If you take your rose-tinted glasses off for a second, you'd see that Kaitos11 is right. Career stats are almost identical, head to head stats are almost identical, and awards received are almost identical. Your talk about how Hakeem was winning DPoYs while Robinson was only winning scoring titles. Did you ever take the time to see who won DPoY the year before Hakeem won his two? Also David led the league in both blocks ('91) and rebounds ('92), so that nullifies that argument.
"umm Robinson can't even carry Shaq's jockstrap.." Dude are you kidding me? Shaq abused DRob only after his injury riddled 96-97 season. DRob outplayed Shaq slightly prior to those matchups. DRob was a much better defensive Center than Shaq and it isn't even close there. Shaq is considered better yes, although I'd like to see how successful he'd have been had he spent most of his best years carrying a lot of those lousy SA teams at both ends like DRob instead of running to every HOFer.
It doesn't matter how many times he won in the regular season. If he can't step it up for the playoffs, what's the point? And they weren't viewed equals because Hakeem still led in blocks and rebounds a few years as well as two straight DPoY's. Robinson all he got was the scoring title by barely edging out Hakeem and Shaq, but Olajuwon was still a much better defender. Hakeem was a 10, Robinson a 7. And that's being nice.
This was actually the first NBA game I ever attended and I've always wanted another look. Thanks so much.
Matt Armstrong that's awesome I'm happy for you
I'll start off by saying David Robinson was a great HOF center, a tremendous athlete and a class act.
Olajuwon was drafted by the Rockets in 1984 and went to the Finals, three times and won two of them.
Amazing shot by sleepy floyd to send it to double overtime.
@hangtime23ful true...i love the replay of that dunk
Yeah man, Sean had the Hemisfair Arena rocking. I miss the old days.
@FuShengAlex That's because he WAS lightyears ahead of the Admirald, and crushing him when it mattered that being the Westrrn Finals.
Finding Rockets games in the 84-95 seasons convinces me they were a third world country until 1997 when Barkley joined them. Barkley was a bonified star ⭐. Hakeem was just some good African in the NBA

Strickland was such an amazing talent.
Both Olajuwon and Robinson had quadruple-doubles in their careers.

well i'would say that ewing was in the discusion of best center at this time,he was still in his prime until 1995

Olajuwon got good wins at San Antonio.

The brief season Robinson was better than Hakeem
If you take your rose-tinted glasses off for a second, you'd see that Kaitos11 is right. Career stats are almost identical, head to head stats are almost identical, and awards received are almost identical. Your talk about how Hakeem was winning DPoYs while Robinson was only winning scoring titles. Did you ever take the time to see who won DPoY the year before Hakeem won his two? Also David led the league in both blocks ('91) and rebounds ('92), so that nullifies that argument.
Hakeem made Robinson so horrible. Hakeem outnumbered him alot.
Shaq stats match D.Rob before 96
It doesn't matter how many times he won in the regular season.
Haha...u are not watch basketball if u said those stupid words for the best center ever......DAVID ROBINSON !!!!!
you spurs fans are delirious. hakeem was better
Yeah "5" NBA championships would make anyone delusional lol
