0025 - Kamikaze Lock Picking / Bumping with Rakes

  • I call it "Kamikaze Picking" and wouldn't recommend it for most situations. You have to go all in for it to work...and even if it does there's a high risk of destroying your tools or the lock. If you're in a situation where picking a lock determines whether you live or die and traditional raking / single pin picking / using violence to destroy the lock doesn't work...then by all means burn the ships, don't look back, and slam it in.
The only other acceptable situation to use this technique is to impress your friends with a cool party trick.
If you decide to try this, practice single pin picking the lock first. This will help you have better understanding of how that particular lock operates and the best tool and angle/s of attack for manipulating it. Place a finger as far up on the shank as possible to help with accuracy for hitting the keyhole. Don't hesitate, just go for it.
Sometimes your tool will feel like it got stuck when trying to withdraw. Often this means you have set all of the pins accept for one, so everything is binding on that one pin. Try to set this last pin by pushing or rocking your tool back and forth. You may need to release some of the pressure on your turning tool to allow it to set. Using a flexible turning tool like Peterson Twists can help.

The clip in the middle was intended to address gatekeeping in the lock picking community, NOT shade toward LPL. It's ridiculous to compare jabbing a lock open vs single pin picking while explaining the process and the feedback from the lock.

People are stupid, anyways subbed after making sure you didnt just steal content, also, question, I really want to try lock picking as a hobby, what is the best lock for a starter? And what is the best pick kit brand that's cheap but good? Also is it illegal to test on certain locks?
Edit: what I meant by steal content was I know theres youtubers who make money with other peoples videos but because most people dont give a fck they just like and go on, I made shure the lockpicking was actually yours and not just a part of 50 other videos, so if anyone thinks I'm being mean, I'm not, I'm just careful

I would avoid the Amazon pick sets that come with clear locks. They're pretty much all the same (probably all made in the same factory). The pick profiles & turning tools are mostly useless and because they're made with the cheapest possible steel, they tend to break easily and could potentially ruin a lock worth more than the kit. The clear locks are cool at first but are easier than most Master Locks and provide little value after the first few minutes of dopamine.
For starter locks, use whatever you have (that's yours and you don't need). Master Lock no 3 / 141 / 140 are popular beginner locks. Personally I prefer the brass ones like the 140 & 150 because they tend to provide better feedback for learning. Some of 141 / no 3s etc have such sloppy machining it can be confusing when you're learning.
The next step up would be learning security pins which you'll find in the 150, & 570. There's no need spend extra cash on models like the 930 as it's basically the same as the 570 just with one extra spool.
Master Lock 406 / 410 LOTO locks are cheap but have some of their best cores because of all the security pins. The American Lock 1100 series is another intermediate lock with the advantage that it can be progressively pinned to create a custom training lock. (I'll cover this in a future video).
Back to pick sets, I linked Peterson's Ghost Pick set because I think it's great combination of tools most people will actually use (quality vs quantity). It's like a condensed version of my main kit, the 14-piece gov steel, which costs almost 3x as much. That being said, it's still $74. Peterson uses gov steel which costs more but also outperforms other brands when it comes to durability (and feedback imo). For half the cost of the Ghost Set you could grab a few individual picks and turning tools (Hook 1, Gem, Bogie 1 & a 40mm prybar will come out to about $35 - you can easily DIY bottom of the keyway turning tools, but the prybar is essential imo)
Dumpster dive around Auto Zone for unlimited free turning tools.
Lock Picking Lawyer has his genesis set on covertinstruments.com which is a great combination of profiles at a very reasonable price. I purchased some of his turning tools and really like the design other than the steel that is a little soft and will bend if you're too aggressive. Again, still great considering the price.
Only practice on locks that you own and are not in use (don't try your front door etc...)
      Hope this helps!

People still don't (want to) realize that "stab raking" is pretty much the exact same concept as a bump key. It shocks the pins above the shear just long enough for the "consistently applied rotational force" (the tension rod) to take over and turn the cylinder. It's not fake or magic, it's just physics (and cheap locks).

No amount of lockpicking disables the alarm system 😂 he may get it but I'll know basically instantly. I'd be more concerned about this guy nicking stuff out of toughboxes without it being noticed until it's far too late. That's the main point of a padlock, a reclosable "tamper" seal that requires at least basic tools to break or bypass. A good lockpicker would be a nightmare on a job site or in the military.

Since you've been getting hate, I'll come out and say it.
You're 100% my favorite, most entertaining lockpicking channel.

I still am very surprised at how many people just refuse to believe you do what you do as effectively as you do. Sometimes someone is just skilled at a craft and knows how to do something quickly and effectively.

Nice jab at LPL. Kinda wanna see a collab between you two now.

    • @McNallyOfficial
      @McNallyOfficial  2 года назад +11

That was intended to address gatekeeping within the lock picking community, not shade toward LPL. It's not a competition: jabbing a lock open and single pin picking while describing what's going on are two different things.
