Great self defense flow drill. Harder defending against a longer edged weapon but the edges do have limitations in that they have to strike with the edge only, unlike Eskrima sticks.
Great drill! Just got a training karambit and found this video looking for some drills to try. Something I'd like to clarify on the 3rd motion (low horizontal slash): When you're using it against the low thrust, unlike in the flow drill, you have the karambit above the parry hand. This makes perfect sense as you want to attack the opponent's forearm while parrying the knife / knife hand. I just wanted to make this clear for anybody else confused by the "10th hand" motions being different between the flow demonstration and application demonstration. I've recently found I need to be mindful of the same issue when stick training doing "meet & pass." I find against the #2 strike (backhand downward diagonal), I have my stick hand over by parry hand - probably due to muscle memory doing the roof block. Thanks for the video Guro!
Hello Joey. Thank you for the compliment. You definitely have a keen eye in kali and silat skills. You explained the 10th hand perfectly! I hope those watching the video also understand what you explained and what you see. Take what you can from the video and disregard what you feel will not work for you, for we all have different attributes. Congradulations on the new karambit! Practice as much as you can. Have a safe and wonderful 2018. Take care and be safe 24 / 7 / 365 and always remember to keep your head on a swivel, watch your six, and keep your back against the wall.
These techniques rely on the defender having some awesome reflexes... For example, when the attacker thrusts, especially with such a long blade, the idea, that the defender has enough time to jump back and slash the opponent is somewhat unconvincing. Also the attacker won't stop at one thrust, he's going to pull his hand back and thrust again...These techniques would require years of practice, sparring at full speed and even then in real fight most likely both fighters would end up injured. The best thing to do is avoid a knife fight at all costs, don't play the hero, even if you do have a karambit or any other knife. If you absolutely must get into a knife fight, get a longer weapon to keep attacker at bay.. but short blade(karambit and even held in downward facing position shortening the reach even more) vs long blade, that's going to bite most of the people on the streets real bad. Only if you train very hard can this work out for you.
@@profetaparaMexico most expert and I mean real experts, not youtubers or money-grabbing scammers, would disagree with you. Even a professionally trained martial art experts are afraid of a knife fight.
@@profetaparaMexico ask yourself a simple question, why they don't do a single one demonstration at full speed with the attacker trying different tactics, why they always do it slowly? Deep down you know why -> Because they wouldn't be able to time those moves properly.
Congratulations on your karambit Harley. I hope this video helps you learn some simple and effective self protection skills. You and I have the same ONE goal... to go home. Keep practicing these moves and with your karambit so that it becomes a reaction rather then a thought. Thank you for the comment. Take care and be safe 24 / 7 / 365!

Ah I see it's good to have that in you. I used to think that way up until I got shot and your completely right it is very difficult to hit a moving target while the two are stressed out on who's going to walk out alive. I also carry pepperspray that has tear gas in it.Together it's one of the deadliest legal weapon system in CA
Matias, let me first say thank you for serving and protecting our community. I am glad to hear you carry your karambits. Make sure my friend that you practice the deployment with your duty belt and when you do not have your duty belt. Using your karambit is very important in defensive situations so make sure you put just as much practice in the deployment of the Karambits. It is useless to have if you can't get it out quickly as you do with your firearm. Take care and be safe 24 / 7 / 365!
Hello Ethan. Thank you for the comment. I am glad to see that you can possibly utilize these skills to protect yourself, your family and the one's you care about. Take care and be safe 24 / 7 / 365!
Great drills, but I'd like to see some full speed application. In my opinion I think knife drills should be done with some kind of practice weapon that has a chalk or marker in the tip so that after full speed drills you can see where strikes are landing on both participants. Fact is both people in a knife fight are going to get cut unless one is a rookie and the other has decades of experience and training. Knowing where those strikes could land might help make your off hand more efficient. It seems like there is some wasted movement between horizontal and vertical strikes. Just my two cents. Again thanks for the video. I plan to run these drills anytime I have a spare minute.
You made some great points. I will do the reactive drills will full speed and application on film and place them on this channel and introduce it as "comment of the week". I do agree with you. Thanks for the comments! Take care and be safe 24 / 7 / 365!
SinaTirsiaWali Kali Thanks for responding. I know it can be hard to do full-speed demonstrations because it can be a bit dangerous even with practice weapons, but seeing the techniques in action can really boost the validity of your drills. Plus I feel like many teachers/Sifus/Senseis/whatever don't like to do full-speed for fear of messing it up and looking foolish. I appreciate your willingness to demonstrate a more lifelike scenario! And I look forward to more videos! I just got my first Karambit, so I'll be watching your channel with great interest so I can make the most of it. Subscribed!

Nice work. You were doing so many things that you didn't have time to explain. Lots of checking going on with your left hand that obviously comes natural to you from years of practice. Those checks are as important as the major moves you were demonstrating. Most don't show the checking and wiping skills you display.
Hello Daniel. Thank you so much for your comment. It does take a lot of skill and understanding to see that the Empty hand has its important purposes to. You have great skill to actually see what is really happening and what is important. Props to you! Take care and be safe 24 / 7 / 365!
i dont know bout the technique.. but, i just wonder.. should you put your finger inside the hole? i think that is the basic of karambit... that hole wasnt for show.. it has purposes.. and thats what make karambit special..
Would it be helpful to defend a slashing attack having a left lead leg (assuming a right handed attacker slashing inward)? I ask because around 6:45, the video shows a defense against a slash attack that didn't appear to be very knife safe (might risk cutting the right femoral artery). Btw, thank you for the demos! I have a karambit that I'd like to run those flow drills with.
Great question Justin. In the Filipino Martial Arts, the lead you take is the lead that best protects you. Whether it be a left or a right lead. Your leads will always change regardless if the attacker is left or right handed. Being able to switch leads is an integral part of the Filipino Martial training. Practice in both leads and practice to switch your leads quickly. I am glad I can share my skills and videos with you. Keep safe and keep practicing... 24/7/365.
I totally agree! Thank you so much for your comment...Take care and be safe 24 / 7 / 365!
I'm with you there dude....most people watching this video are NOT jet li, giving this advice to normal people is flat dangerous. someone swings a big knife at you, step to the side and do your dancing slash move to their hand as it goes by.....better advice, RUN, if you can't then creat distance of some kind, hit them with a chair, get a table between you, grab anything that will give you reach to keep them from getting close enough to murder you. GET OUT.
Congratulations on being new to kali and the karambit. What are on my wrists are leather bands. Traditionally worn to protect the inner wrists from major cuts to the arteries. For me if i will be in this scenario , I will never let his hand free and strikes anywhere specially with the knee. till his weapon welded on his hand. im afraid of the back return of blade as the normal reaction or answer of the aggressor , for me once i catch the hand i will use the whole length of the blade of the karambit to penetrate the pulse towards deeply the entire flesh then twist and anchor the blade to his ulna or radius bone while my left hand holds the aggressors weapon hand to neutralise and took his weapon , for me that is the time to escape or go for a kill. But if i still have the distance i will choose to run ,

I would like to give a big thank you to you for doing this video. I'm in wheelchair and I do carry a Karambit with me at all times and I have been practicing these drills that you are talking about. But I find it's easier for me instead of holding the blade down like you're doing it's much easier for me to have the blade upwards. am I doing something wrong or does it matter the way you hold the blade? thank you for this video and all your other great videos as well
Hello Kenny. I am so glad this video can assist you in every way. Holding the blade up is another great way of utilizing the karambit as a self-protection tool. Having the blade up actually gives you more reach when applying the skills in the video. Reach is always an advantage to you. So for you, practice with the blade up. This will give you more of an advantage in so many ways. If you would like me to place a video up on using the karambit with the blade up, it would be my my honor. Let me know if you have any other questions. Take care and be safe 24 / 7 / 365!
+SinaTirsiaWali Kali yes if you can do a video with the blade up on the Karambit I very much appreciate that. Thanks for taking the time to read my question. take care stay safe.
Hello Kenny. I created a video just for you my friend. View it on filipino kali educator on RUclips. It is titled Wheel Chair self-defense. It emphasizes what you asked for as far as the karambit being blade up as a self-defense tool. Take care my friend and be safe 24 / 7 / 365!
Hello Marcus. great question.. the concepts of the left hand would still apply to either leg. The motion would still be identical. if you are interested in seeing a video on the use of the left hand, let me know. Take care and be safe 24 / 7 / 365!
3 years late. But never late to share what is my view. On leftys. I'm a lefty. Nothing is impossible. We can use our left handedness to blend. U got no choice. Mirror mode. What they can do with their right. We too can. In a elegant way. The lefty's Way. Proven via research. Right handed is normal, left handed is SPECIAL. PEACE BE UPON YOU
Uh a real attacker with a machete will not atrack you with the handle, they will try to cleave you with the sharp end. So it will be almost impossible to parry their hand because why would someone with a machete swing from that close? Unless you as the defender closes the distance as the attacker swings yeah it's possible
Hello Von..you make a great point! Yes the intention is to recognize the threat and if running is not an option due to closed quarters, then closing the gap is the reactive and reflexive choice to make. Running is always the best option. Thanks again for your comments. Take care and be safe 24 / 7 / 365 my friend.
This is very unrealistic in real scenario especially in the thrusting position, the attacker wont let you hold him, he'll withdraw the weapon and stab you over and over again very fast and we have to take consideration that he's using longer weapon than you so he has the reach advantage, sure you can give a good fight coz you're a professional but surely you'll be wounded as well.
Great point! These drills give the average person a "chance" based upon reactions. I do agree with you. This video just shows opportunities and possibilities. Do you have any videos to share to add to other peoples tool box for this type of scenario you can share?. Take care and be safe.
@@filipinokalieducator4620 I agree with your stand point about giving a "chance" to average person to at least depend themselves but the best thing to do when the attacker pull out a knife is just run or avoid the conflict at all, either way your video is very informative.
I totally agree with you! Running is always the first and best option. Thank you so much for your insight and thoughts. They are truly appreciated. Take care and be safe 24/7/365.
Great point! Thank you for the tip... targeting a moving object with adrenaline pumping maybe difficult to do. Femoral artery is a great option. What is important to me is not that the person bleeds out, but that the aggressor will not be able to further attack because of the lack of his or her ability to walk toward me or follow me as I exit. If the aggressor can't walk, then he or she cant attack. If the blade catches the artery, then it does. What's important is the defensive motion. What ever enters that path will be cut. Again thank you for the tip... great point! Take care and be safe 24 / 7 / 365!
i'm sorry but i dont think this is logical,u should at least workout a footwork and move to a kill shot rather than playing around with his wrist, nobody can catch a raging machete strike,it should be neutralised asap, like using the kerambit to attack the hands or moving outside of his trajectory and neutralise any efforts of the opposing combatant, just an opinion,i do respect the art of kali tho
The tactic of attacking the knife arm is often called "defanging the snake." If you effectively disarm your opponent (at least of their most effective weapon), you've neutralized the threat. Cutting tendons will render them unable to hold a knife. Additionally, the karambit is a shorter weapon, using that against primary targets for "kill shots" is more dangerous for the defender as they need to get in closer.

Thank you for visiting my channel. Unfortunately, I do not have any training sessions in the Philippines or in Manila. However please watch, my videos on both my channels to learn and take skills that may work for you...take care and be safe 24 / 7 / 365!
But if i still have the distance i will choose to run ,
Great analysis. First choice would always to be to run. Happy holidays to you and your family!
@@filipinokalieducator4620 likewise po and salamat sir. Btw sir im not an expert actually i watched your videos and sir marcaida and practice it on my own, i buy a foldable karambit for my own protection bcoz im a daily commuter po, mahirap na sa pinas madami masasamang loob. I adopt your moves and apply it po while imagining different scenarios of attack and on how to block and grab hold then strike po. Im doing it just like a shadow boxing po , Keep on uploading vids pa po ng marami sir , salamat po
I am so glad you watch my videos and master Marcaida. Learn from what you can and adapt to what works for you to protect yourself, your family, and loved ones. Salamat Po!
No problem my friend. I will work on your video this upcoming weekend. Take care and be safe 24 / 7 / 365!
Sir. Do you have a gym, here in Manila??
Hello Rommel. I hope you are doing well. I am so sorry, but I do not have a gym in Manila.
what if you are left handed?
Hello Marcus. great question.. the concepts of the left hand would still apply to either leg. The motion would still be identical. if you are interested in seeing a video on the use of the left hand, let me know. Take care and be safe 24 / 7 / 365!
Thanks and that would be awesome to see
+marcus rollind another thing you can do is practice with both hands. just in case
+Redcat Gaming
thank you for the additional information for. Practicing with both is always beneficial. Take care and be safe 24 / 7 / 365!
3 years late. But never late to share what is my view. On leftys. I'm a lefty. Nothing is impossible. We can use our left handedness to blend. U got no choice. Mirror mode. What they can do with their right. We too can. In a elegant way. The lefty's Way.
Proven via research. Right handed is normal, left handed is SPECIAL.
PEACE BE UPON YOU
5:53 is a failed defender, that space that you should eliminate or it may catches you on a number two or 7 or 11 strike of long blade big guy..
Check out this Karambit. Just came out yesterday.
Hello Thomas. What karambit are you referring to that just came out yesterday?
Foi mal muito fiquei ser muito rápido muita visão muitairmão conseguiu ver aquele lá eu fazer meu pé de banana é uma loucura
Last strike or low hook should be targeted to the femoral artery
Lol. Another 1 Great comment.
U must be the man who......
Knows every single bit of everything. Or knows nothing but wants to talk bout everything.
For sure. U must be the one that knows every single bit of everything, not....
Empty inside usually carve your kind of comment. Stay or be humble.

leme see u do it fast as if u were actually using it -_-
Great point..maybe I will do this video in full speed for such advanced students as yourself. Thank you again for the comment. This video was created as an instructional skill for beginner in mind. However you bring a good point. I will speed this skill up in the next video so the realism of the drill can be seen. Take care 24/7 365.
@@filipinokalieducator4620 im not an advanced student thats why i wanna see how u would swing it in an actual fight
Okay. Thank you for clarifying that Chief Beef. I will definitely make a point to show the skill in both slow motion and real time especially on future videos. Thank you for your feed back. Hope you friends, and family are doing well. Be safe and take care 24/7/ 365
