An option for the masks would be a exhaust booth that would draw the air, and fumes from the person doing an operation like cutting the tube, cleaning the tube etc.
@ted jones Another option would be for everyone to stop worrying about how others run their businesses or their lives, Maybe you can put an exhaust booth in your shop when you start building driveshafts! I am sick and tired of everyone always criticizing others, These videos were about driveshafts and not operational procedures and how to work safely, I swear to God most men should go have their testosterone checked because I swear to God half of them have turned into bitches!

I’m afraid the video is going to get them an OSHA inspection. (As you know they can be very expensive.)
I would put a entire cage around the machine ( they might require a exhaust hood in case of failure) then the controls outside the cage with a safety on the door lock. As well as the load cell and monitor for testing/ data logging for potential customer / future reference.

If these knowledge seekers duplicate incorrect procedures that they see in a vid, the results might not go well. Sure, you can see a vid where someone is running across the street without looking but that does not make the vid " the right thing to do " .
I wonder how many anti safety people view Cleetus McF. . .k or Scotty Kilmer as experts.

Switch to Aircraft AN bolts (grade 5 )with only the unthreaded portion in shear or use the grade 8 with the unthreaded portion in sear.
Metric bolts are superior period!!! Japanese are the greatest engineers

Great video on how you build the carbon drive shafts. I understand that when the tube breaks it turns to dust, what if a u joint or a yoke fails when testing it can happen. those parts go flying everywhere. I would make a guard to go over the driveshaft when testing. IMO Thanks

You might look at using spacers so you can use grade 5 shoulder bolts in the sheer area. The threads are a stress riser area that may not get a repeatable result.

Hello, Great video. I just have a question. You said you were using a 4" cylinder. I assume thats a 4" bore. You also said you were using 150psi of air pressure. How are you getting 4000 lbft of torque? A 4" bore has an area of 12.566 in2. If you were to use all 150psi the max force you could get from that cylinder would be 1885 lbft. Just curious if I'm missing something? Thanks and keep up with the great videos!

I mean, that has to be the strongest glue in the world, no? It's just mind-bending how strong it is. 3M engineers are making some next level futuristic shit. They must pay their engineers some serious bucks! They make so many different products too. I'm just a chef not a mechanic but even I know from my early days of sud-busting as a dishwasher that any of the generic Scotchbrite pads are nowhere near as good as the OG 3M green ones.
Y'all do some cool stuff, and I definitely wasn't being negative with my PPE comment. As a licensed respiratory therapist I have seen some bad stuff caused by inhaled particulates, and was genuinely concerned for your health. Keep building cool parts, and I hope your business continues to grow.

From the very first article I found "Long-term exposure to carbon fiber dust can lead to chronic lung diseases". Leave the safety to the professionals and go back to your window licking.
i Understand testing is needed but do you think in anyway that 4000lb of test could be shortening the life of the shaft ?
Like have use ever kept testing the same shaft over months or a year to see how many test before failure and if testing has negative effect ?

I hate that people came to watch that demonstration of Steve’s driveshaft and just showed up to be trolls and tell everyone how they are so much smarter than people in business, I say to them if you’re so smart go open your own shop or quit talking, thank you gulf coast driveshaft for sharing your experience and time here on RUclips, if I ever get a pro mod (win lottery) I’ll be calling you for my driveshaft as well!

A friend of mine has a carbon fiber driveshaft that the yoke adapter spins freely inside the carbon tube. Is there a repair for that ?
Too funny. I don't think people *"mean"* what they say but yes this is something new and that scares people I imagine no different from constantly attacking $ba Boeing. Still I would note making a carbon fiber drive shaft versus an entire Boeing 787 Transcontinental Jet Aircraft be two *SLIGHTLY* different tasks at hand when all us here in cheap seats start going bezerk. Had a class mate who used to funny car racing and well, you're sitting on a literal bomb so I respect those willing to "go there" and all of those willing to go along with what is to me anyways a true an honest Walk on the Wild Side.

Now got me wondering how many ft/lbs a SMX on full kill could produce..... the instantaneous shock load and accompanying twist felt by the shaft from launches would be an interesting investigation, I wonder if Composite drivelines have looked into it

There are components intended precisely for this sort of thing, shear pin torque limiters. Maybe your engineer can take a look at incorporating them your machine. I have used some that were resettable, but you can get them with pins designed to fail at precise loads.
I'm curious how you arrived at the 4500 Lb-Ft of torque the Torque-anator is supposed to deliver. Could you go into more detail on the math?

p.s. Looking at the Torque-anator what I see as the most likely failure point is the cap and bolts holding the spindle down. While it is designed to resist the lifting force generated while turning large-swing items. Those forces are much less than what is seen in your application.
Unfortunately the math is over my head. Lol. Our friend Kevin who helped with design of the machine did all the math. He is a retired civil engineer. We use a 6" air cylinder with a 12" arm.
@@gulfcoastdriveshaft Don’t sell yourself short! It’s the Area of a 6” Circle times available air pressure in PSI equals the Pounds of Force, times the 12” lever (1 Ft) equals Lb-Ft of Torque.
The math makes more sense with a 6” Dia. Cylinder. I heard you mention 4” several times during the video an I thought it was a 4” Dia x 4” throw cylinder, so my math fell short.
In your case, the 6” diameter circle has a surface area of 28.27 Sq/Inches. That 28.27 times your 150 PSI of shop air is 4240.5 PSI of force at 1 Foot, or 4240.5 Lb-Ft Max Torque, unless you increase your shop pressure. Sweet!

How does torque-anator make so much force? The lever arm coming off that 4" cylinder looks to be 12"-16", if the shop air is 150psi, that would make 1885ft/lbs - 2827ft/lbs
I apologize i should have been more clear. It is a 6" air cylinder with a 4" stroke and 12" arm. I did not do the math. That was done by a close friend who is a retired civil engineer. The math is way over my head. Lol

I'm a huge fan of carbon fiber interested how well it does with shock loads. Driveshaft but would it work well for way front wheel drive axles! As these cars get even more bonkers power wise I feel carbon is the next step!

My name is Patrick and I was one of the people that commented about the masks . I get concerned instantly when i see anyone potentially breathing in any kind of carbon or cement or wood dust because i work in the building industry , and I hate to think of anyone having to suffer later in life because of it . I hope I didn't come across as not caring because I really do .

No hate intended, and I'm not jealous. In fact, I like the people and the channel very much. I've Liked, Subscribed, and turned on Notifications. I spent 38 years as a certified master mechanic. Before that, I was a machinist, doing tool & die and prototype work. Before that, I worked in Printed Circuit shops. During Jr high I helped work on a local race car that ran at Miami-Hollywood Speedway. So unlike the 'armchair" RUclips warriors, I've paid my dues and seen my share of injuries and OSHA troubles. It's simply a case of I wish someone had informed me when I was young. So I wouldn't have COPD and Emphysema now at 65+ years old. I'm lucky because I don't have cancer. But I've lost many friends and coworkers to work-related cancers.

I'd be careful around acetone and bare hands. and everyone that was affected by accidents and exposure sure wish they were more safe. a withdrawl hose will suck fumes away. alcohol might be a better alternate, its what a lot of repairs are pre cleaned with in Aviation we read. Air isnt as safe as fluid for testing, just look at testing of scuba tanks. it the tank fails the air loss is deadly, if tested with water pressure, the pressure drops instantly to zero

I’m guessing you have never seen what happens when a air cylinder binds up and breaks free! I never use air cylinders that could break / fling objects around people. (Unless a lot of guards are used.) Hydraulics don’t fail explosively like air.
You could easily use a hydraulic hand pump or a some super cheap power unit. It wouldn’t be a very high pressure system with the right combination. Your “engineer” should have known this!
I will tell you for a fact! If OSHA sees this machine they will write it up.
OSHA will want a safety cage around the entire machine. (Personal experience)

First thing I noticed. Carbon fiber when cutting has a HOO effect to your lungs it f goes in and never will come out. Where is your ventilation fan and your fas repertory mask. Not good
