ABOUT KIM'S CONVENIENCE:
"Kim's Convenience" depicts a Korean Canadian Kim family that runs a convenience store in the Moss Park neighbourhood of Toronto: parents "Appa" (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) and "Umma" (Jean Yoon) - Korean for dad and mom, respectively - along with their daughter Janet (Andrea Bang) and estranged son Jung (Simu Liu). Other characters include Jung's friend and coworker Kimchee (Andrew Phung) and his manager Shannon (Nicole Power). The series is based on Ins Choi's 2011 play of the same name. Mr. and Mrs. Kim have worked hard to give their now-twenty-something children, Janet and Jung, a better life in Canada. This comedy finds laughter in the trials of running a literal 'Mom and Pop' shop while raising kids in a culture not quite your own.

Surely her accent sounds korean-like, but her outfit... never saw an ultimate japanese otaku-style like this
Koreans can't be weebs?
ImpulseOfSword They’re just not usually like that
I was wondering about that.
Well there are ANIME FANS IN KOREA...
Sssssssooooooo...
@@ayeya9886 Kind of depends on the group. Last time I visited family in Korea a few of the younger members were extreme weebs. I don't know if it was that common back then and I don't think they were trying to accurately represent Korean weebs with this or whatever but they certainly exist.
As korean, she is just Japanese stereotype girl.
It is very rare to find people who enjoy cosplay culture in Korea.
I'm also Korean, and I agree with this person. She said "kkkakdugi."
I've never seen a Korean say "kkkakdugi" when taking a picture.
She has definitely Japanese appearance NOT Korean at least.
She probably cosplays
Koreans don't smile like that
@@swordimpulse07 Definitely Loli style.
I was always confused as to why they portrayed this character in such a way. It certainly didn't vibe with current Korean culture, but more like Japanese otaku. But, after reading the complaints Simu Liu had about the producers of the show, it all made sense.
ohh, what did he say?
Simu himself is Chinese lol
DAMMIT THE PEOPLE MUST KNOW
@Mr Mrs that the show was very white behind the camera. White writers producers etc who had 0 real understanding of Asian culture
they basically made her into a caricature of asian culture while all the "canadian-ized" characters are humanized
Nayoung is too pure for this world
With many "friends "
Friends in different area codes. Nice gal 😂
I loveeee her character. If they do a second season, bring her back as an international student in Toronto.
Wi Wi They did and she lives in Waterloo.
atleast 10 TB
Because she was living in Japan? No Koreans act like this.... T.T
David Gai running shoes and Leggings? thats not really common tho
Millie Moore maybe you're right I rather think like that otherwise it's super weird
Totally agree with Millie Moore. This character is more Japanese inspired than Korean. Chalk it up to artistic license!
It's fun that know how many korean sociaty and culture changed in some decade. I feel close with nayong if I find how korean personality and apperance is even though nayong act like weeb charactor XD
Millie Moore my ex was a lil bit like that. Young ppl in korea nowadays say like sumimasen and some cringey japanese weebs stuff
If there's a girl like her in Korea, chances are she'll be bullied lol.
Or taken advantage of
It is always cute and funny to see how westerners keep messing up things when it comes to Korea and Japan lol.
Relatives from the old country are awkward regardless of ethnicity. Having Canadian distance from your heritage gives you a weird perspective.
zell8888 Very true.
this was a bad representation no one, absolutely no one is like this in korea. japanese weeb mascarading as korean
Her makeup, hair and outfit is JAPANESE STYLE OR HARAJUKU. I was really confused when I was watching this episode
she looks like from japan, not kroea
She's a sweetheart!
The moment she smacked her uncle, you know she's not Korean Korean. There is NO WAY that would ever happen.
To those saying she is Japanese, not Korean. The actresses s name is Soo-Ram Kim. She is Korean. For those who say she looks Japanese, not Korean. WTF? That's like saying she looks Dutch, not Belgian. This is a great performance. I've met many Korean, Japanese and American teen girls who are into Hello Kitty and everything cute. She is precious! Stop trying to ruin the pleasure of a great performance. Stop with the identity politics and word games. There is nothing derogatory or debasing about this at all. The creator of the show is Korean, too. Love this show!
People talk about her fashion, not just appearance like face. It doesn't mean she's not Korean. We’re saying the research about Korean girl’s fashion is wrong. Don't you understand this seriously? It’s not Korean style. And I’m a 100% Korean born and grown up in Seoul whole my life. It’s absolutely Japanese style. Not common in Korea.
Translate it ^^
@@blueblueblue5042 You say you know I'm not Korean so why are you writing me in Korean? Is the whole world supposed to know Korean for your comfort and convenience? Your problem is with the show's creators who ARE Korean. Stop trying to make the world conform to your feelings. I thought that narcistic woke BS was only over here. I guess it's infected Asia, too.
@@blueblueblue5042 No, I guess I don't understand. And more importantly, I don't care. I don't think it's important at all. I love her character and the show. I guess I'm a horrible person. I'll just have to figure out a way to live with myself.
@@blueblueblue5042 you must be damn blind, I lived in seoul for 17 years. i can't even count how many girls I personally know that unironically wear frilly outfits and the ears
I love her character. So cute. Love Nayoung.
love this show!
I want the cat box
She is lovely ♡
Miss her
This episode was too funny
What season and ep?
Kimchee scored hard.
I love Nayoung!!!
She is literally HACHUBBY
I'm so happy Nayoung returned in Season 5
I wish she had bigger role in the episode though
@@amurad3931 Same same
What ep
@@miriam_aquinoo "A Tangled Web" - Ep 5, 57 overall
If you're going to make fun of a Korean girl at least make it right. Lol
Because Koreans can't be weebs?
Maybe they did and you're just not understanding the joke.
@@xFlareLeon they can but will never visit their relative in otaku style. And not a single German character in a Canadian show will appear as croissant-loving, marine-theme shirt wearing, and very fashionable even though this German individual can be out there somewhere. Don’t act like you don’t know how this work, it’s disgusting
I guess the writers from Kim's convenience watched too much j-drama instead of k-drama... shame
Nobody cares
That’s going on the don’t touch wall!
That cousin looks like a real-life version of some anime character.
What an underrated show it should’ve been on for another three years at least
so sad to hear it ended at season 5 and won’t be coming back 🫠
I’m Korean, and nayeong’s appearence is definetely not like korean teens. If someone wears like that in Korea, they’ll treat like a nerd... even Japanese never wear like that. I think the director confused between the real appearences and animation character of Japan. Most of Korean teens wear hood and just comfortable jeans like any other teens do. Also, that cat money box? is that right? It’s not Korean stuff, that’s from Japan. I can understand the directors confused about asian culture, but to Koreans, that was a little annoying scene.
Also Jung is played by a Chinese Canadian actor, not a Korean Canadian actor
I am pretty confident Nayoung was meant to look and behave in lines with a number of stereotypes to such an extent that it cannot be seen as anything but a caricature. A very cheerful and colorful caricature you cannot help but be fond of.
I knew a guy at uni that acted like that.
totally Kyary Pamyu Pamyu inspired character XD. I frickin Love it!!!
PS3GamerSyKe Except she's supposed to portray a modern girl in Korea. Not a Japanese girl. No Korean girl dresses like her in Korea. A more mature/sexy style or is preferred rather than cute style that Japanese prefer.
She is my favourite 😄 12a3022o20
The subtitles on Netflix spell Oppa wrong, they keep spelling it with a “B” and “Ah is that the Canadian way to spell it or do they not know how to spell it.
This is basically a stereotype of Asian girl fetish
Wherr can I get that cat in the box
Janet is probably..a 'twitch' streamer.
What is it mean? Is it like saying cheese? Takuji or something like that
"Kkaktugi" is Korean radish kimchi. The joke is that it sounds similar to "cheese". Saying "Kimchi" is also kinda popular when taking photos.
No Koreans act or talk like that. Nayoung is just like japanese.
what's the name of the cousin?
shinrey zhang nayoung
Yum Yum
Nah. She acts more like japanese than korean
?
now, we can see how ignorantly canadians see about asians like especially korean, chinese and japanese. the role of media is very big to affect people mentally. if koreans are described like this, there will be jusy more steroptyes, which will make more discrimination.
The Korepanese this is🤔
Probably a salty korean american writer who thought it was a good idea to make fun of native koreans to make her dress and act japanese
This is a Canadian show with Canadian writers.
Funny thing is that the writers barely talked to them about their experiences as Korean Americans to have ideas for the show (according to one of the actors). I was honestly suprised and not suprised at the time due to the fact that there was always inaccuracy or a bit a vague stuff relating to Korean culture.
Whoever made the cousin character that is not Korean. That character gives me goosebump and disgusting.
Japanese woman dresses like that and puts on makeup like that. Korean women are not like that. Lack of understanding of Korea. This show can fool Canadian viewers, but not Koreans. And no one says Kkakdugi when taking pictures. People say Kimchi.
Why did they portray her like a japanese otaku? I was not only confused but also uncomfortable to watch.
the way this show portrayed korean-korean girl is quite offensive. so racist.
Naya is the most annoying character.
That cousin looks like a real-life version of some anime character.
