  • LNER Class A4 Pacific 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley was the motive power for todays Settle & Carlisle Fellsman railtour from Crewe via Chester to Carlisle and return running both ways over the Settle Carlisle line, we first see the Blue Streak with twelve on and 47810 on the rear from a blustery Sheriff Brow by kind permission from the farmer then on the return again in blustery conditions at Birkett Common, thanks for watching.

    With the blue and white coaches behind a black 5 it took me back 40 plus years when the bottom leg of the CME would run to Carnforth from either Skipton or Hellifield. In the autumn months the train would be returning in similar lighting conditions, the only difference being that there was no bypass and the engines could be heard all the way from Settle jctn.
    Thanks for venturing out, luckily they managed to claw a lot of time back and there was sufficient light for you.

      Thanks Idris, things have certainly changed a lot over the years and mainly for the worse, it’s a gamble now with a later return and depending on the weather as to how long you have the light as the cameras struggle once it really gets dark but WCRC did a great job with some keen running to get back on time leaving Hellifield as it could have been a lot later, my return journey was delayed as the A65 was blocked with a car fire between Lupton and the duel carriageway so had to manoeuvre some back lanes to get round it, cheers 👍

    Nige, Certainly looked a wild weather day but with a great result. Regards, John

      Thanks John, wind was the main problem with it being rather blustery and only had a couple of showers which came a the right time as not to spoil things, regards nige👍

    That's a cool view with those three bridges in quick succession, although you can see how expensive it must have been to build the line

      Thanks Andrei, yes a great view looking down the line towards the bridges, the far one is a actually a tunnel, there was certainly no expense spared building this line at at a time before heavy machinery was around, cheers 👍

    Very nice 'Sir Nige',
    Some excellent footage, and superb locations, virtually in your 'back garden' eh.
    Good sounds from the A4, and the weather was rather kind eh?
    Keep them coming Nige.

    Thanks Nige great stuff as you always deliver although a battle with the elements. I will get up to Ais Gill shortly on a decent day
    I can now get a train twice a day from. either Wilpshire or Clitheroe to Hellifield and as far as Ribblehead on Saturdays so must give it a try. Cheers Brian

      Thanks Brian much appreciated, there’s nothing we can do about the wind unfortunately, it will have been a while since you last ventured up to Aisgill and the saplings are growing fast now, the train to Hellifield and Ribblehead will be very handy for you and save on car journeys as well, cheers nige👍

    Good first location, not many seem to go there. All angles covered at BC with the wind going in the right direction.👍

      Thanks David, was always a popular spot there so we always ask the farmer nowadays just in case the bull is around 😂 luckily the rain had past at Birkett and yes the wind blowing the right way albeit a strong one, cheers 👍

    Excellent Nige, Sheriff Brow is 1 of the best northbound locations in my opinion. Going well at Birkett aswell 👍

      @nige7577  3 месяца назад

      Thanks Simon, yes I can only agree with you on Sheriff Brow, we always ask the farmer and there usually no problem unless his bull is in the field which runs faster than we can 😂 luckily the rain had past at Birkett which made for a great shot, cheers 👍
