15 Ranks in a Space Marine Hierarchy (Warhammer 40k)

  • Here in this video we will try to arrange the Astartes according to their ranks and hierarchy within a chapter, although there might be differences between different chapters, the overall arrangement would be similar. The Organization starts with a squad of 10, of which there are many types like scouts, assault and battle, then ten squads make up companies which are composed of a hundred astartes, There are battle companies and support ones, then all of the companies constitute a chapter of a thousands space marines. Of course there might be a slight bit of debate as to including the specialised units within a ranking system, but the general layout in their heirarchy would be as follows. If you disagree, then there is the comment section down below.

I remember reading that chaplains are of relatively high ranking, with every companies' chaplain's word being second to it's Captain. This is similar with Apothecaries, Tech-Marines, and Librarians, with them being being technically lower ranking than a sergeant, but also possessing authorities that match members of high ranking positions.

This is correct. All of the lowest rank chaplains and Librarians are considered the lowest rank of space marine officer and both advise their lieutenants and captains. They outrank sergeants. Basic tech marines and apothacaries are like warrant officers, they are not considered command officers but are specialists.
Reclusiarchs, Epistolaries, Forge Masters and Master Apothacaries are only outranked by captains and above.

This is all very dependent on chapter to chapter and while you can base this on chapters that follow the Codex Astartes, Chaplains are part of the command structure not simply fresh astartes right after augmentation. This generally goes for Librarians as well. On the table top Apothecary, Techmarine, Librarian and Chaplain are considered HQ units. Apothecary's and Techmarines generally under go more training one as a medic the other under the Mechanicum. I believe they have had their mettle tested before they are trained in those skills though.

I think the main thing is knowing that there is a difference between "rank", and "role".
Specialists like apothecary, techmarine, chaplain, even librarian are roles, but they can have their own rank structure separate from traditional battle brothers. And instead of reporting to an officer in one of the 10 companies in a chapter, they might report directly to higher ranks in their own structure, or "chapter command", which is where the chapter master and his honor guard are.
Another thing is the idea of "veteran" being a rank, when it's more like a service record. Everyone knows that 1st company are all veteran status astartes, but it doesn't mean that there can't be veteran astartes and sergeants throughout the companies here and there. Usually a company command squad will have a few veterans, along with a champion and ancient being a veteran as well. Remember that every champion, ancient, sergeant (and other officers) are likely veterans, but not all veterans are those. It's just not a "rank" per say.

As far as my memory takes me into the past, the order of ranks for me is this!
    Battle Brother
    Corporal
    Sergant
    Lieutenant
    Captain
    Commander
    Marshal
    Primark
And the battle brothers of the first are all veteran sergants who can command in the other companies
And all "specialists" are basically sergeants before they are divided into individual ranks where they also have their own ranks after training and promotion
    e.g.
    Lexicanum
    Codifier
    Scriptor
    Magister
with famous exceptions like Ragnar Blackmane

before lieutenants were added, chaplains were the second in command of a space marine company, a demi company, which was the main way a company was organised for battle would either be lead by a chaplain or a captain. so saying they were the same rank as a bog standard marine is plain wrong... i mean theres a reason chaplains, librarians and captains are HQ units in the game and always have been and sergeants are just models with an extra point of leadership. as a huge marine fan and player for the last 25 years there was so much wrong with this video

  • @orionspero560
    @orionspero560 Год назад

I would say that the specialist branches have a rank = the 1st company, and not the line brothers. If so the librarian pilot would be with a first company private and millibrarian sergeant would be with a first company sergeant and so on. This also explains the master's position which is the same rank as the first captain.
The for want of a better term staff officers of the chapter master and the captains also need to generally be bumped up a rank compared to where you put them. So a company banner bearer has equal standing to a sergeant and the company champion has equal standing to a veteran sergeant. The chapter ancient and champion have ranked equivalent to a lieutenant and a captain respectively.
Other than those two sets of understanding of the rank gained by non direct chain of,nd you got it pretty good.

Lieutenants are mentioned in the Lexicanum under "Space Marine Legion" -> Organization
" At the head of the Legion was its Primarch Commander who oversaw the Legion's headquarters. Below this were the Chapters of the Legion, each of which was commanded by a Chapter Commander. Each Chapter in turn was divided into a number of Battalions, each of which was further divided into Companies. The Company, itself divided into a number of Squads, was the basic military division of the Legio Astartes. Due to the varying sizes of each Legion, there was no fixed number of how many Chapters, Battalions, Companies, and Squads a Legion would contain"
They had basically the same role as a sergeant today aka squad leader of 10-20 battle brothers in a tactical squad and 5-10 battle brothers in a support squad.

How dare you rank a Chaplain as plainly equal and below the others, wait till Chaplain Bald hears about this. (Seriously though Chaplains are unique because they arent chosen usually by rank but rather by fervoror in administrative fortitude, the Emperor himself appointed their existence to act as guides to towing the line - im more scared of the weakest chapters Chaplain ((including homebrew bc its susposed to dive deep)) than I am the strongest chapters Primaris)

First of all, this video is wrong from the start!
Titles are divided into Ranks and Specialist Ranks.
    Ranks
All Space Marine Chapters loosely utilize the same types of ranks.
    (Many non-Codex Astartes chapters, however,
will often use different names for these positions):
    Chapter Master
    Captain
    Lieutenant
    Sergeant
    Battle-Brother
    Vanguard Space Marine
    Neophyte
    Graduate
    Specialist Ranks
In addition to their standard ranks,
Space Marine Chapters also maintain a variety of specialist roles:
Librarian - Psyker warriors of the Chapter.
Chief Librarian - The senior most Librarian of a Chapter and the commander of its Librarium.
Codicier - The 2nd highest rank of Librarian
Epistolary - The 3rd highest rank of Librarian
Lexicanium - The rank of newly-inducted Librarians
Acolytum - Librarians in training, not yet inducted into the Librarium.
    Chaplain - Warrior
Priests of a Chapter who oversee morale, discipline, and spiritual purity.
Master of Sanctity - The senior most Chaplain of a Chapter and commander of its Reclusium.
    Reclusiarch - Senior Chaplains
    Chaplain - Standard Rank
Apothecary - Battlefield medical specialists charged with not only healing their comrades, but also collecting the Gene-
    Seed of fallen warriors.
Master of the Apothecary - Senior most Apothecary and commander of their Chapter's Apothecary.
    Apothecary - Standard Rank
Techmarine - Technology officers and engineers of a Chapter who maintain the Armory.
Master of the Forge - Most senior rank who commands the Chapter Armory.
    Techmarine - Standard Rank
Master of the Signal - Battlefield communications specialists.
    Chapter Ancient - Revered Standard-bearer
Judiciar - Executioner who works under the Chapter Master
The important thing is that the Standard Rank of specialists is the lowest rank among SPECIALISTS and not the standard rank in the Order.
Codex describe that, for example, to become a Chaplain student you must be a respected veteran at a minimum. And at the same time it becomes Neophyte but in the Chaplain structure. Naturally, such a Neophyte is not equal to the newly recruited Neophyte scout.
In a huge number of Astartes Chapters,
ranks and rank of Specialists may vary greatly or be absent altogether (for example, Dark Templars do not have Librarians)

Lot better than your video on space marine sizes, but both this and that video show you have little knowledge of 40k and the places you are going to for research are somewhat out of date on some occasions. I understand it though, you suddenly got a f**k ton of hits to your channel from 40k stuff and want to capitalize on this. Be wary though 40k fans are ruthlessly stringent to the lore and you get it wrong they will turn around and bite you. Before you step into the 40k pool know that the fans are the apex predators and the second they smell blood in the water they will have a feeding frenzy. If your using 40k hits to boost your channel without knowing much then back out now while you learn and take some 40k fans with you before you piss them all off and get a sudden drop.

Yes, it is much more complex than shown in the video and many things are also wrong. Just to name a few things that can be read in the Lexicanum:
      1. neopytes (scout marines) have most of the implants already, but not the black carapace.
      2. specialists like Techmarines, Chaplains, Librarians or Apothecarys are officers and form a parallel structure beside the normal line organization. They are not usually commanded by line officers, but assume specific roles on the battlefield where they are attached to line troops. They have their own internal hierarchies, with the lowest ranks probably analogous to lieutenant and the highest ranks directly below chapter master (Master of the Forge, etc.).
      3. company champions, veterans, sergeants etc. have a similar situation. Also their ranks are not clearly locatable to each other. In the literature it is described that sergeants are often veterans and there can be a change from a normal member of the first company to a sergeant of another company and vice versa. Only the sergeants of the first company are above those of the other companies in rank.
Actually, there is only a clear line of Battlebrother, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain and Chaptermaster. For everyone else, it depends, and that's what I don't think the video makes clear.

@@haringsablay9262 i know but this video shows what a standard astartes chapter hierarchy looks like and most of the time chaplains, librarians, and apothecaries are only under the company captain in terms of rank as they are specialist forces and it is stated in the official wiki and lexicanum as such. Also some other chapters such as black templars and dark angels treat their chaplains with high respect and rank.

@@jarubyjane Then, we have the same idea.
Lots of Chapters hierarchy are different than others, so it is hard and takes a long time to make such vast amounts of information digestible for the viewers to take. Have to say...the specialists i.e. medics, tech marines, chaplains etc. are higher rank than basic marines. You got that part way wrong. Having specialist training elevates them to the equivalent of an NCO at the least. If you look at modern military structures, specialists hold a higher rank than basic grunts and I don't see why it would be any different with the Astartes. You are making the Sergent rank way higher than it should be...they would be on par with the specialists as NCOs give or take. Company champions are not lower than the multiple sergents leading the various squads. I'm not sure where you got the ranking structure here but the whole middle section 13-5 is all jumbled up, chapter variance aside, and really doesn't make sense. I have been playing 40k since the 80's and served for 20 years in the military...this rank structure is way off.

I still wonder what logic one must follow to belive a basic soldier somehow out ranks a specialist. Imagine some fresh blueberry marine that just finished his last gene implant outranking a guy who did all the training, implants and the specialist training on top.
