    A long time ago, way back in nineteen hundred and ninety-nine, there was a re-release of these model kits: the "Space: 1999" Eagle, and Moonbase Alpha.
    I purchased them from a hobby supply store in California. I asked the customer representative if they could date the invoice for a particular day, they said they could.
    So, fast forward to today, and I still have the model kits that I purchased on September the 13th, 1999. (The day that the moon exploded out of Earth's orbit)
    Even back then, I was a nerd!

    Buddy of mine had the original kit back in the 1970s. Had a lot of fun with that, especially the day when Alpha encountered a can of Slime. We had quite the imagination back then.

    Very nice! I remember building the original kit when I was 12 years old. I left the whole thing white because my painting skills were not developed enough to paint those tiny pieces. I wish it had had those decals. They really add some color and detail. At the time I build mine, the show was in its second season and they had abandoned Main Mission for the cramped Command Center. This model made me nostalgic for the look of the previous season.

    Small error there on Prof. Bergman--he HAD no sleeve color! His sleeve was the same color as the rest of his uniform.

    I saw this kit in a store once. I remember the box was open and I saw the tiny little Eagles. My parents wouldn't buy it for me and I never saw it again. As the years went by, I started believing that I had dreamt it as nobody else I spoke to had ever seen it. It wasn't until many years later when I got on the net, that I was able to see photos of it and learn that it was indeed real.
    Actually, I was kind of surprised that it turned out to be real. Maybe it sounds weird, but I've had many dreams where I'm in a model shop and they have kits of pretty much everything I've ever wanted to have a model of.

    Luv it! Thank you for the continued interest in the program. It premiered on my 13th birthday in 1975, Sept 9... as a kid I thought it cool that the odyssey began on Sept 13, 1999.

    , needs all the very identifiable lamps, plastic chairs and the grey toned big globe for the Commander’s office.
    I have this version of the kit, and this part is still boxed. I think I’ll light it and leave the plain sides off the model for viewing, maybe use them to extend the commander’s office to the correct length. I added a few bits to the exterior model to make it more accurate, like a few extra tubes, a boarding tube to an Eagle on a pad, cut another pad and made it so it was lowering an Eagle to its hangar, and used a transparent rod to support a third Eagle in flight. I mounted that inside a deep section Ikea frame and mounted it on the wall - it works really well.

    I believe the original set did have a spiral staircase. I recall Judy Geeson collapsing on or near it in her episode.

    I loved that kit with the tiny eagles. I remember cutting off the heads of pins to (crudely) emulate the lamps on the control station/desks. Just found Koenig's desk in my kit-bash debris box. *Sigh* Better daze.

    I have this model, still need to build it and have the original one built. Did notice your staircase was not built correctly & yes in the TV series it was a square staircase & not a spiral staircase.

    Terrific work on the Moon Base interior model. This really brings back happy memories of watching the show. Nice work too on those miniscule figures. Maybe removing the bases on the figures and positioning them would look better....maybe?
    Keep having fun.

    Hi Oggie,do you think it could be possible to add some lighting, like smd, leds? Thanks
    Richard

    • @InterstellarModeler
      @InterstellarModeler  7 лет назад

      Hi Richard. Yes I would say so. One guy simply made the portholes in the buildings and placed regular LEDs inside the buildings. I would certainly suggest the SMD lights instead for sure! They are flat and can fit in tight spaces. Probably the chip sized ones would work pretty well. No doubt you'd have to use quite a few I would think.

    If you were to walk up the staircase it leads into thin air is it in upside down?

    • @InterstellarModeler
      @InterstellarModeler  9 лет назад

      Well actually it leads to a second level which I would assume would be connected to other other parts of the base. Even on the show they didn't venture up to that 2nd level. So it's just left up to you imagination

    • @speeta
      @speeta 9 лет назад +1

      +Interstellar Modeler The real set featured a right-angle turn staircase in roughly the same spot leading to the observation balcony. Up there were a few large windows that featured in some episodes, so some scenes with the leading cast were staged there. Unfortunately there were no doors or hatches on that level to suggest any continuation into other sections of the base.
      Compared to the FX studio models and sets, the Space: 1999 hobby kits were woefully inaccurate representations that got the basic shapes and proportions right but not many of the details.

    Watching this video has been super fun and all the more relevant for me as I’ve recently completed a Virtual Reality experience based on the Eagle Transporter and Main Mission set :-)
    If anyone is curious about how the two compare, you can see a full size virtual walkthrough of the Main Mission set here: ruclips.net/video/uO8mNAMiCvs/видео.html and an interactive diorama here: ruclips.net/video/aYwB5ZYv3xI/видео.html
