  • Sometimes our Adventures have to be put on the back burner for some vehicle maintenance. Why not do it yourself, quickly and cheaply so you can hit the road for another adventure???
    Here's a quick, to-the-point 6 minute video of how to change your coil packs, spark plugs and spark plug wires on a 1995-2004 Tacoma & 4Runner! These parts work on any 3.4 Liter V6 Toyota (Tacoma or 4Runner) so check out this Tune Up! Changing the spark pugs, wires and coil packs took me about one hour to complete. Save yourself the labor a shop would charge and give it a shot!
    Below is everything you'll need to change the spark plug wires, spark plugs and coil packs!

    THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT. Torque spark plugs to 13 pound-feet. DO NOT OVER TORQUE spark plugs because the heads are aluminum and threads could strip.

    Always disconnect the negative battery terminal first. There was no need to disconnect the positive. Other than that.... Great informative video.

    Tools needed, 10mm socket, a 5/8" spark plug socket with rubber seal inside, 3/8" ratchet and a 3/8" extension that is 24" long really helps, a spark plug gap tool that measures .044" gap (some gap tools are different sizes) to gap your dual electrode plugs. I used a small drop of anti-seize on each spark plug thread near the beginning of each plug about the size of the tip of your small finger. On the driver side I loosened the ground to the intake manifold and pivoted it to make hitting the front drivers side plug easier, and also removed the throttle cable bracket on the drivers side for easier access also, just re-install after completing the job

      Good job. The only thing different is why I choose the NGK because they’re pre-gapped and have a coating from the factory that doesn’t need anti-seize. Sounds like you did a good job!

      @@AdventureStop Thanks, I realized NGK were what I removed from my truck, I got a PO304 code from my check engine light, it translated to a cylinder 4 misfire detected. The check engine light turned off and the rough idle/running was fixed. Your video helped, thanks for posting

      Just did my 04 Tacoma TRD, but I used OEM Toyota parts. A bit expensive but works the same probably.

    You may wish to blow out the spark plug chamber before you remove it to avoid having debris fall in.

    So it's a 6 cyl but only uses 3 coil packs?

      Yep!

      Each coil pack operates two cylinders. One side is the coil pack, and the other is the spark wire I believe.

    Was your gap okay when you checked? Also just curious why is dual electrode a must? Thanks btw and nice video

    • @AdventureStop
      @AdventureStop  3 года назад +5

      Yes! Gap was ok on all 6. The spark plugs are coated with a special coating so anti-seize isn’t needed. Not sure why, but Toyota highly recommends dual electrode...so much that they put a blue and white sticker on the plastic fan shroud advising to do so.

    Think I’m going to try it out do you remember what size spark plug socket you ended up using from the 3

    • @AdventureStop
      @AdventureStop  3 года назад +1

      You’ve stumped me! It was the middle one but I don’t remember the size. For what I recall, it was only around $15 for the set and is worth having different sizes. The process isn’t hard…just takes time, but will save you a ton in labor costs. Hope it all works out for you!

      Adventure Stop aha no problem I’ll get the set of three also one more question, do you remember the size of your extensions. Thanks so much for replying definitely save some money

    • @AdventureStop
      @AdventureStop  3 года назад +3

      Nah, but if they’re old Iike mine or if they have high mileage, might as well change them out. They were less than $40 for the set on Amazon. 👍🏻

      @@AdventureStop good video, if I were to replace coil packs I'll go with OEM. I just like my truck to have OEM parts that last decades..
