I've been playing the violin for 30 years and I still like to play the F1 from time to time... 😏
You can also do a really neat motorcycle imitation by pressing down harder on the G string with the bow while sliding the left-hand finger up and down the string.
🤣
That should have been a point for the piano, as it's impossible difficulty
From a comedy music encyclopedia I once had: "Why does a symphony orchestra have so many violins? To increase the probability that one of them might play on pitch."
Ooooh! That's a bit rude!
@@wolemai Almost all comedy is at the expense of someone or something. Not quite all, but most. That "encyclopedia" also had the definition, "Oboe" An ill wind that nobody blows good." It also had a comment about sopranos saying they could hit the high notes due to a resonance from having an empty brain cavity." So, you see, it could be worse. Of course, another axiom is that there seems to be some truth in all comedy.
@@trainliker100what is the name of this encyclopedia?
@@felipechrysostomo760 I'm sorry, but I have been unable to remember. A while ago I tried hard to find it and buy a copy. I don't know what became of the one I had. I had gotten it from my mother who was a professional concert pianist. I probably loaned it to somebody forty years ago. I think the word "humor" was in the title, but not sure. It was a pretty thick book as I remember.
@@trainliker100As a soprano, hilarious 🤣
That's so much fun. I have always thought the piano is one of the easiest instruments to play at a very basic level. You can just sit down and play a tune if you are shown some notes. Whereas there are technical difficulties just making a half decent sound with both string and wind instruments. However, all instruments are very difficult to master and achieve a professional level. I don't think there is any easy path - it just takes talent and a huge amount of practice over years.
Easiest to learn , hardest to master .
Piano has an incredibly high skill ceiling due to all its possibilities. I feel like violin has a pretty high skill ceiling as well
with piano it's the multitasking aspect that's the most difficult
@@Halberds6Tbh every instrument has high skill ceiling because every instrument has infinite skill ceiling. Even the best players still practice to be even better and sometimes even learn new things too.
@@theancientone1616 yes but some instruments can't do chords (wind)
However wind instruments have double tonguing and circular breathing so I suppose your right in some regards
It is hard to tune a piano, but more difficult to play violin in tune
Yes! That's what I thought too. It's more difficult to play violon in tune.
Fax
It is impossible to play an out of tune piano in tune.😂
You can tune a piano or a violin, but you can't tuna fish.
A piano is tuned in equal temperament - an equal spacing between notes. Mathematically this comes very close to just intonation (frequencies of notes make integer ratios, like 2:1 is a fifth). But not quite. So when you play chords on a piano, they're always slightly out of tune. This is especially noticeable when you play thirds. There will be a slight and rapid wavering.
Because a violin is "tuned" on the fly by the violinist, it's can always be played in just intonation (depending on the skill of the violinist of course). So it's actually one way in which the violin is superior to the piano. If you (properly) play a third on a violin by double stopping, it will sound cleaner and purer than on a piano. (This capability is lost on a guitar, since the frets are fixed for equal temperament.)
You can tune a piano for just intonation. But it can only be tuned that way in one key scale at a time. The moment you change to a different key scale, it will sound terrible. And unfortunately, the more interesting music incorporates lots of key changes. I've been waiting for someone to program a digital piano so it adjusts its tuning according to the key changes in the piece you're playing. So it always stays in just intonation. (It should work for the harmonic parts. But disharmonic chords would need to be switched back to equal temperament.)
I know that Victor Borge, originally a viola player before piano, said the difference between a violin and a viola is that the viola will burn longer. So, in this case, I guess the difference is that the piano will burn MUCH longer.
Borge was a master at making himself appear incompetent, when in reality he was a virtuoso performer.
@@Zerbey Occasionally he would play a piece straight, like Claire de Lune, so that people could see he was a real classical pianist.
Ha.
Comparing percussion to strings is amusing. I play piano and my daughter plays violin and we would have a similar debate. Thanks for the fun video.❤
Piano is both percussion and string, So there for it is neither.
@@オールマイト-y1f It’s considered percussion. I’m a traditionalist. 😂

Not arguing with you or getting flustered. Just saying. Also you made a comment in a public space. It leaves it open to criticism. Like anything I say here can be.
Violin is just harder in almost every way (and I say this as a pianist). That being said, since piano is chordal, it takes way more music theory to be able to improvise and write for piano.
Yes it is, I'm a violinist and I recently started playing piano and I know how to play more pieces on the piano than I do on the violin.
it's not fair how pianos sound so good yet violins so easily sound scratchy 😢😢😢
@@notyayanguyen1735 Just keep practicing, learning violin takes a lot patience.
CORRECT
Yes and No.
As a child I started both. My problem with the piano was coordinating my left hand with my right - playing one hand was possible to a point, but my music teacher gave up on me after about a month. The violin - two lessons were enough to convince me that I would never get it right, it was far too intricate. The most progress that I made was with the cello. I also had a brief experience with a clarinet and that I would have liked to continue.
Same problem for me as my mother would tell me I had trouble dealing with the "two lines" (two hands) with the piano. She was a professional concert pianist and, unfortunately, I did NOT inherit her skill. But I did fine on several other orchestral instruments. And finally went fully to the dark side - trumpet.
@@trainliker100 Skill is not inherited, it took me six months to learn my first proper piece, but I don't care, I will continue with learning keyboard instruments. Just a month or two are not enough to learn any instrument to a decent extent.
None of those experiences were nearly long enough. A year is necessary to really evaluate. But yea do what what are drawn to. Clarinet is good
I guess the difficulty is the piano is to coordinate between left and right hands and reading different notes for both. Violin mostly is to get the right note by touch and experience. That comes after the weight of each.
You're missing a bunch of things by "guessing" 😂
The piano is possibly the easiest instrument to play at a basic level...
...which is why it has some of the most difficult and intricate compositions.
3:09 why did it sound like a siren on a fire truck😂

The true answer!
Outstanding.

You are my best students ever.
For me is the same because I can´t play one or another and, of course. I admire a lot a great pianist or a great violinist. Both are my favorite instruments. Only for listen, unfortunatelly. Grettings!
As a former violinist who plays the piano, I say that the violin is much more difficult.

That was most entertaining! 👍🏻🇬🇧
How about other instruments?
You can walk up to a piano, and play a tune that sounds like a tune. It takes practice on the violin to get anything to sound good. Violin is harder.
Brilha brilha estrelinha no piano: 5 minutos
Qualquer nota que seja no violino, bem executada e afinada: alguns dias
If you play reading the notes when you play the violin, read only in the key of G or violin. Iif you play the piano you have to read the notes of two keys, G and F.
@@gringo2325 Technically, I learned Twinkle Twinkle little star on violin in 5 minutes. However, none of the notes were in tune except the open strings, and that was only because my instructor had just tuned the instrument.
The truth: Once you learn how to play the violin it is much easier than playing the piano. Classic case of violin being hard to learn but easy to master and piano being easy to learn and hard to master.
@@snowraw2479 you really don't know what you are talking about... piano is a very hard instrument to master, of course, but it will never be as hard as the violin. The amount of dexterity, musicality, and body awareness that someone needs to become a violin virtuoso is fenomenal. Violin bow control is something that you need decades to really master; playing in tune needs a LOT of practice if you don't have a perfect pitch; double-stops, harmonics, glissandro and other fingerings technics on violin are insanely difficult to master. I could stay here for hours and i wouldn't be able to describe all the subtletys of the violin.
Now you need to try bowing the strings inside the piano. Pianolin!
After the typewriter and the washmashine videos, let’s say… give him 6 month! 😅
You guys are hilarious and melodic! Thank you so much. Victor Borge would be proud!
So from this video, I learned rhe two main differences between piano and violin:
1) you don't use your foot to play the violin, and
2) a piano can't do a Formula 1 impression.
Aside from that, they're pretty much the same, right? 😁
And of course, the viola is superior to both. 😎

Back around 1978 I devoted considerable time to designing the electronics for a piano that would play all by itself. But life got in the way, and I never followed through. Now I get a certain pleasure from seeing one actually work. It tells me I wasn't completely crazy after all.
@@clarencegreen3071 it can be just my ignorance, but I thought pianos that play themselves were invented a very long time ago, I don't know, those scenes from western movies where the piano is playing itself, I'd say they already existed, right?
@@luizlima4819 You are correct. They are known as "player pianos." They used a long scroll of paper with punched holes to activate the notes. What I envisioned was one that was based on electronics and the new computer-on-a-chip technology that was emerging at that time.

Hard to compare in this format because you can just keep adding things to the list, and some like "repeated notes are more difficult" are a slight difference while others like vibrato add a significant gap in difficulty.

However, in another less inviting situation, I'm having to relate to a very good guitar player who apparently can't read music.... Or maybe I just don't know how the different instruments achieve sound, timbre and scale. Bottom line question is... how do pianos and guitars differ?
How should a pianist or organist relate to a guitar player?

When you play a violin piece, you are a storyteller, and you're telling a story.” - Joshua Bell.
No piano, basta apertar as teclas certas.
I would say for just overall tone and sound quality violin is much harder, though phrasing and musicality is way more important on piano and the small things really amaze me with the world class pianist. Though phrasing and musicality is also important on the violin, I think piano has it way harder.
The violin is more difficult to learn but the piano is more dynamic and flexible.
The piano requires coordinated control of both hands, In this respect, I think playing the piano is at least as difficult as playing the violin.
I think the point of this video is that it isn't worth having a pissing match over.

I played piano from age 6 to 9, when I changed to clarinet. I could never manage the violin. So, violin is harder.
Violin takes longer to get into. Real piano playing is actually much more difficult than 3 years. I dont think you would have gotten to that level
Violin is the easiest instrument instrument to learn, i don’t know how you guys convince yourself otherwise
@Roger.T Your opinion.
As a violinist, this is inaccurate, playing the violin with the mind is possible and very easy
I've never heard la Campanella on violin before and it is so pretty! Can we get the whole song on violin please?
Awesome what you guys did in this video!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Wow! Breath taking!
Was hoping for a tie that led to a 10 pace duel. Good video either way gents.
Versatility of a piano and keyboards is unmached. You can play your chords and melody at the same time easily. But playing just solos with something like violin or an electric guitar will always sound better. And you can do way more effects and expressions
Interesting. I remember when I first started playing piano, my Dad told me it was the hardest instrument to play. I have been hearing about how violins/violas are the hardest. I play both, and would not label either one as "hard." The instrument I have struggled with the most is the twelve hole ocarina, which I can really only play a basic scale on without pausing.

I guess it's just a question of perspective. As a pianist and a cellist, I can tell that it's way harder to learn the basics on string instruments. Takes years of practice to get a decent sound. That being said, both have their difficulties and both have the qualities.

I think you under-rated the point difficulty values on the piano, but overall, the V. is more difficult. However, then piano is kind of to patting your head while rubbing your tummy. The violin, much less so. But one thing for sure, if there were only two instruments in the world, choose the violin and piano!
As a pianist and violinist, I can tell the violin is much more difficult than the piano!!! (La Campanella is a rare exception. I played both so I know.)
