@@alltoohalliwellMy understanding is that the company takes the orders first, then after the ordering window is closed in November, they'll run of all the plushies for this campaign, then ship them all. This way they bear absolutely no risk of running off a batch of Jacques (in this case) and having any unsold stock.
It is always amazing to hear really niche experts talk about their area of interest and just how naturally it flows. I'm a court reporter, so I've gotten the opportunity to listen to many experts in oddly specific areas - never a whip expert, of course, but definitely some really unique areas of science.
The "oh crap siren" is very real. I'm a fire performer. When I'm learning a new trick I mess up a ton with dry props but the moment i add fire, its a lot easier to do everything right. It's like my body knows "mess this up and it's gonna hurt."
It's interesting to see how even in the lab how you have some subtle extra body movements that show how heavily you've clearly integrated music into your muscle memory. Music does wild things to change the body. I saw a biosensor study on a drummer in drum corps years ago that found they were hitting physical exertion markers like an olympic sprinter but sustaining it over a much longer term and then even when the drummer was on the sideline getting the sensors adjusted, his body reacted just from hearing the music start. I also read a book from a neurology study of professional musicians' brains about how learning a musical instrument to a mastery level can optimize the brain structures not just hearing, but also math and language and build interesting connections to all sorts of different processing centers. These kind of studies are just so fascinating. I also loved hearing you explain - it reminds me of the book On Looking - about expertise and how it changes how you see the world because of it.
I don't know if it was my nerves singing or my adrenaline flowing or what, but every time I heard the cadence for run-on when I was in band, I could literally feel my body revving up to hit the field. Even now, nearly twenty years out of high school, hearing run-on gives me goosebumps. O.o
Scientists: Hey you! Jacq: Me? Scientists: You are very weird, can we confine you in a strange room and watch you for a couple of hours? Jacq: "Le' Gasp! Of course. I'd be delighted! Speaking as an ecologist who usually deals with sasquatch quality videos I wish I could lure in my subjects this easily.
I love that he showed up in full costume! But seriously, that was absolutely fascinating. I didn’t realize he knew the science of whip cracking so thoroughly.
I love how even for a scientific experiement, he has to put on the outfit. Lol. Although he was really rocking the pirate look with the black motion cap on.
Ok... I mean you're shows are awesome. I hope to get to see one someday, but I'm an absolute NERD when it comes to listening to people talk about their niche. It's great getting to hear the little details learned over years of experience which are normally only distilled into silent effortless practical application. I mean, it's the fundamental cause of the Dunning Kreuger effect, right? I just love hearing the answer to me asking in my head, "This looks fairly straightforward, what am I missing that makes this a trained skill?" Thanks for sharing!
Welcome to the scientific process, it can be a long slog! 😂 Already got my plushy order in, maybe one day I'll make it over to a show from Europe and bring it along. Thanks for the awesome entertainment!
There’s a point in the video when he lifts up his whip and taking about it. The scientist quickly back away as if they are afraid that deadly whip might touch them
That was surprisingly interesting. I'd never though about how you held the whip, the different flicks you do, or where the whip rolls out to. Thanks for sharing this.
Very cute plush *ordered* :) I know they were working more scientifically on the body motion/handling but would have loved to have seen that tracker track a whip flip too :)
Awesome stuff! I just saw you a week ago at King Richard’s Faire, and I also do research at northeastern, what a small world! Dagmar Sternad, the head of the action lab whose voice you can briefly hear in the middle of the video, was even on my dissertation committee. As a music scientist myself, it’s always awesome to see science and the performing arts interact like this, so thank you.
Your interaction with the students was great; breaking down your process as you work, helping to further develop their own research. A true educator invested in their craft!
This was so awesome for two reasons. 1) listening to the science behind your crack is fascinating (pun intended)😜 2) YOUR PLUSHIE CAME OUT! I had to get buy a few because my kids threatened to steal mine if I didn’t buy them one too. We bond over your RUclips videos.
Interesting that they had you do it in costume. I would have expected one of those black suits with the ping-pong balls. Ah, there it is. I imagine the 'whips have a mind of their own' based on how the individual hides stretch and flex, and how they are braided.
I've always thought that if I could see Jacques perform in person, I'd suggest "In The Hall of The Mountain King." Now I know he's at least worked on it.
Ok number 1, did they ask for the costume or did ya just feel like it? :P 2. It'd be interesting to see the difference in motion between you, Adam and Jennifer to see how differently you perform basically the same action
@geodude77 I have played Dark sider sthree, but it's kind of Got that combat cross castlevania type. Feel to it, I'm talking about where it's literally just a whip.
Good point 😅 I had forgotten about that until a bit after I had posted the comment. It's pretty much just swung around as a loose chainsaw blade and never really used for any type of accuracy either
Honestly, I would love to see all of the footage. I am very interested in it, and all of the minute differentiations that occur that you may not consciously think about anymore.
The "I could go for days" explanation feels very much the same as swinging and catching nunchucks. I'd love to see a comparison between movements using a whip, nunchucks, and three-section staff.
It’s so wild to see someone who knows the science but has no experience with this application & someone who’s an expert on the application but doesn’t know the science behind it collect & discuss data together.
This was quite a fascinating experience! On a technical (audio) note, I'm not sure how you had set up your home audio equipment, but even though you had the Rode mike set up in a good place to pick up your voice, that's not what actually captured the sound used in the video. It sounds like it was the mic built into the camera. You might want to review your audio chain and run some more tests to get that working correctly next time.
I have seen your whipping videos for some time now. Especially the reels and shorts. But now hearing you talking about whipping so analytically is so incredibly interesting. I love it when people show of so much knowledge about their craft
I just finished watching the new castlevania show, and now I kind of want to see Jacque break down just how the Belmonts use their whips and if any of it is acurate.
Loved seeing you at NJ RenFaire for years when I live in the north east. Now in GA and the family and I hope you would make it down to the GA Renaissance Festival outside Atlanta.
Love the plushy! I'm you you will sell lots of them! Interesting seeing you do the motion capture for this. Now I want to see you show up in video games!
Fascinating to hear you talk about the science of your talent. Sure, you're an artist but there's a lot more going on than only shticks. I hope they learn a lot from your time with them.
That is really interesting research! I’d never thought of that, but yeah, humans are decently skilled at dealing with non-rigid objects. I remember learning fly fishing, and having to be taught how _not_ to crack the line, haha. Turns out that understanding of how long lines work is applicable to string and cat toys as well!
Katie wanted me to let you know that she will be at your Oct. 22nd show in Carver ❤. She's so excited to see you again after that last 15 minute get away you two had after your show, and it swooped her off her feet. Dont let this girl go, she's amazing!❤
I'm not surprised that he worked in the media industry at all. His voice, manner of speaking, and overall presence make him literally prefectly suited for a career in media-related roles. His voice is soo charming! ✧ ⭒
He was one of my favorite newscasters at NPR. The timbre, inflection, and cadence he used in his radio work made him incredibly soothing to listen to, even when he had to deliver awful news.
Fun! I first saw Jacque ze Whipper (billed as Jack the Whipper) on America's Got Talent. So cool. Enjoy your videos...great voice too. Anyone would think you were a broadcaster, lol.😊

Oh I wish I could afford the plush!! It's so stinking cute
I'm definitely ordering one (edit: just did!), but I'm just curious why don't they ship until next February?
I am sitting here saying I want one to cuddle with. Trying to give my partner hints. Maybe he doesn't get it! 😅

That was awesome!! I love watching science happen!!
I love how everyone at the University looks professional and then we have Jaques in his ren fair fit
He sounds so professional talking about the whip stuff it's so interesting to listen too 👀
Just to let you know, he was an NPR journalist has a BA. But was raised in the carnival life
That’s because he is a professional :)

I'm now really questioning the convention who suggested we start with fire juggling when no one had juggled before. I wasn't brave enough

And scientist is an actual French speaker it sounds like, rather than his faux accent.

Same same! I could watch the entire 2 and 1/2 hours; I love stuff like this. And it's even better when it's for SCIENCE! 😁
Welcome to the scientific process, it can be a long slog! 😂 Already got my plushy order in, maybe one day I'll make it over to a show from Europe and bring it along. Thanks for the awesome entertainment!
This was super cool to see. I love how sweet the lab folks were about your comfort.
There’s a point in the video when he lifts up his whip and taking about it. The scientist quickly back away as if they are afraid that deadly whip might touch them
I still am not used to seeing him moustacheless 😂
at least not while in costume, that was odd
That plush is CUTE!
I can't imagine how loud it was in the lab when you were double whipping double time!
Ikr, I'm thinking "where's the hearing protection?!" XD
That was surprisingly interesting. I'd never though about how you held the whip, the different flicks you do, or where the whip rolls out to. Thanks for sharing this.
Very cute plush *ordered* :) I know they were working more scientifically on the body motion/handling but would have loved to have seen that tracker track a whip flip too :)
Yes!
I absolutely love that you showed up in character.

The bounce between your skills and them asking the right sorts of questions, was super interesting to watch!

This was fascinating to learn about how you move and can recognize what the whip is going to do based on your grip or position!

Ok number 1, did they ask for the costume or did ya just feel like it? :P

I think he brought it XD it’s probably like a second skin to him
If they ever make a video game where the whip is the main weapon Now we have all the information to make that game as accurate as possible
Darksiders III
@geodude77 I have played Dark sider sthree, but it's kind of Got that combat cross castlevania type. Feel to it, I'm talking about where it's literally just a whip.

Phantom Abyss is a roguelite action platformer where the whip is your primary traversal tool and interaction device.

You are such a legend Jacques keep up the great work I always love seeing longer videos from you lol especially my immortal, what a trip
I LOVE that you showed up in costume!
I absolutely love this more serious scientific analysis type of vid. Adorable plush 🙂
This is so cool, I would watch the whole 2 hours of footage
Interesting. Each whip has character.
The plushies were such a pleasant surprise!!!
How interesting! By the way, I love your videos. You’re a very entertaining fella.
That was very interesting! I was expecting this video to have been longer. I could easily have watched a lot more!
Random comment here but who wants to see him do the timewarp with his musical whipping?
Excellent Halloween suggestion! 👄 "Don't get STRUNG OUT by the way I look, don't judge a book by its cover-r-r..."
One of my fave movies.😂😂
@@glowormrdr6183or how about when he says the word " Anticip.....pation"
The fact there is still do much to learn about how we do thing physically is amazing. Always room to learn more.
Thanks
love hearing you talk about the technical bits of your art! thanks!
Congratulations!! Very educational Do you get part of the proceeds of the plushie?
soon in stores:
Jacques Ze Whipper: the video game
It could be in the style of Guitar Hero.
I have seen your whipping videos for some time now. Especially the reels and shorts.
But now hearing you talking about whipping so analytically is so incredibly interesting. I love it when people show of so much knowledge about their craft
Id love a plush but I would have to explain it to my husband... "Its a dude on RUclips I watch that whips it " 🤣
Wish we could see more. You're awesome
POV: The bard is on another side quest.
Very cool video!! Love the plush too :)
Jacques even looking cute in the rubber suit
I just finished watching the new castlevania show, and now I kind of want to see Jacque break down just how the Belmonts use their whips and if any of it is acurate.

I feel like we need a childs book with the plushy "Jacques Ze Whipper Goes to School."
A little history of Jacque ze Whipper. Maybe he has a princess somewhere we don't know about. 😮😮😮😮
Okay Dread Pirate Roberts! Calm down.
it's weird to see him in costume but without the sharpie mustache XD
PLUSHIE! SOOOOO CUTE!
This was cool to watch, thank you for taking us with you for it all.
You are the most charming, delightful, and random rabbit hole I've fall down in months! Thank you, RUclips algorithm! 😂
That was cool to see your process!
Awesome video, interesting to see your whips and science combined
Just amazing to watch and learn! ❤❤
This is awesome
Looks like a training video for future robot overlords.😅
This was fascinating, thanks for the look at your process and the science. Were there any musical whips requests fro the team?
I love that he got in uniform for it too
I can’t believe a youtooz plush of you released pretty much the day I found out about you 😂 that’s awesome!

Now to see Jacques in a video game.
Without the stache, he has a baby face! Good looking kid!
My husband has ordered the plushie and I can’t wait to get it
Gonna use that data in videogames
Super cool video!
I love how he wore his costume there😂😂
So cool!!
This is like bringing in Clark Kent to do a study on Superman.
It's not " whip stuff " it's Science !!!!!❤
That plush is pretty rad
