    I love the zinnias! But I understand wanting to use that space to plant food instead. Have you thought about a cover crop until you are ready for Fall planting? If that doesn’t work I would go with your dry bean option or dent corn. Good luck, I know it will turn out great for you! Your tomatoes look really good, how do you keep a handle on blight?

      I don’t think I have time for a cover crop as I will plant for fall in mid August. But I do see great value in cover crops and will plant some this fall in empty areas:) I have been really aggressive pruning the tomatoes this year. I have been taking every leave and branch with any spots and cutting them off. It has worked really well, but as soon as the season gets busy, I’m sure i’ll fall behind.

    I don’t know if you’ve ever tried Orca Beans (aka Calypso Beans)…it’s a bush bean you harvest dry. They’re black and white, and when cooked turn tan and white. They make a beautiful presentation in a traditional, New England style baked bean recipe..using salt pork and molasses.

    I was also thinking carrots because you can mulch them and leave them in the ground way past frost, and harvest as needed. I agree w Kale too. Can leave that in way past frost and use for soups, stews, kale chips.

    A suggestion: don’t plant sunflowers in the veg beds - yes pollinators and pest predators love them, but, sunflowers are allelopathic which means they can send out toxins that may inhibit the growth of nearby plants. I just plant them near my veg beds.

    Hi How do I know if my raspberries are summer or autumn. I didn't prune them at all last autumn and this summer, I didn't get many. Also I don't know how old my strawberry plants are. Some didn't fruit. Is it because they are too young or too old? Can you tell the age by the leaves or something?I love your videos by the way. You are so hard working. You've been growing food the same amount of time as me but you seem much more knowledgeable x

    • @MorganHillFarms
      @MorganHillFarms  3 месяца назад +1

      So glad you are enjoying the videos and that we are both growing food! Do you know what the variety of raspberry is? That could help us figure it out. Wait until late July, early August and see if you get any berries. If you didn’t get much for summer and get most in fall, I would assume they are everbearing. Strawberry plants can definitely stop producing as they get older. And they can also produce poorly if you leave the baby plants , or runners attached to the mother plant. The babies suck energy from the mother plant and don’t allow the mother to produce much.

    Is it too late for okra? I planted okra and it was all eaten up by something. Ugg... all that work!
    I have a question for you... What time of day do you water? Do you have trouble with hot water in your watering system. I worry about scalding my plants if I don't have that chance to water in the morning. It's a pain to disconnect my system of hoses to drain off the hot water for an evening watering. Thank you!

    • @MorganHillFarms
      @MorganHillFarms  3 месяца назад

      Okra can take 50-75 days for a harvest so I would count back from your first frost date and see if you can replant. Japanese beetles love my okra…..really all my plants have damage from those guys. I wonder if that is your culprit?

    • @MorganHillFarms

      I have a drip irrigation system that comes on around 7am and my last zone finishes around 9:30 am. I do have some containers that I water with a hose and I do let the hot water run before I water them. It is burning hot when you first turn it on. I used to water in the morning when I hand watered. I think that is the best time to do it.

    Can you be more specific about pollination issues with corn, and about you running out of time?
    What I would do is try to grow food if I can somehow buy property.
    If you want to grow flowers then I suggest separating flowers from food in other words the flowers are not grown with the food crops. I have a good reason, for telling you what I did. If you want you could put flowers near the food crops, but I do not think it is a good idea to put it in the food crops.
    What I suggest you do is before you try growing something to learn about what you want to grow FIRST!!!
    Regarding myself, I had some good results, but not enough with growing strawberry plants, and lettuce.
    To stay out of the grocery store well I think your going to need a certain amount of square feet of space dedicated, for growing based on the amount of people you live with including yourself. I have a rough idea of what the amount is per year of space what you would need, for yourself, but not per individual seasons. It would be, for the entire year! If you are living with other people then I think you would have to double the amount of space, for each person who you live with, so you can have enough food to eat.
    Regarding myself since I have a stomach then food is a necessity, for me to survive, so if I could then I would dedicate enough space, for me try to grow my food. Where I am considering living there are no grocery stores, so I would have to plan out what I what to grow, and eat, and this is something I have been doing. At one point I was concerned about pollination issues, but not anymore!

    • @MorganHillFarms
      @MorganHillFarms  3 месяца назад

      That is great info. When I say pollination issues, I am referring to corn needing to be planted in blocks. Each silk needs to be pollinated for one kernel to grow on the cob. They recommend you do a square or block of corn to ensure that you have good pollination so that you corn ears are full and not missing kernels.
      I am running out of time because I only have so many days until my first frost comes, so if I plant something that needs more that 110 days, I may not get a harvest because the frost will kills the plants before they produce:)

    • @knowledgeandmultiskilled
      @knowledgeandmultiskilled 3 месяца назад +1

      @@MorganHillFarms Did you not learn how to grow food when it is cold outside?
      Yes, the silk needs to be pollinated, but what you are telling me is different from what I heard. The top of the plant should be removed to pollinate the silk unless if you have pollinators to help you.
      About a half an inch down from where it is pollinating is where you would have to cut off from the plant, so it would be near the top. It looks almost like >>> W
