      Hi Scotty you are the best Mechanic i love your work.

  • @vaddoc

    Scotty, after I watched your videos I decided I will do some work on my old ford focus. I first changed oil and filters, then brake discs and pads, then dumpers front and back and a few other bits and bobs and then I thought I would have a go at the timing belt and water pump. I had a friend who used to work in a garage helping me. It took really close to a day and I spent in parts and tools as much as I would pay someone to do it but we actually pulled it off. I could not get the air con belt on (not really a problem, I live in UK) and after disconnecting the battery the radio needs a code I do not have. So, my own experience: We should work on our cars as really with a bit of homework we can do a lot but as for the timing belt it is a mountain to climb, not for the faint hearted. Next I will need a clutch but this I think is a job for a pro.
    Keep up the good work

    I'm sorry, as a mechanic, this pains me. You must know that the engine had to be in tone before you do anything. Never heat the crank bolt, it damages the front crank seal. Always use the tool for installation, you can use an impact gun for removal. That coolant... Honda Type 2 is very reactive to contamination since it has borax in it over silica. Lots of things missing from this video...

    • @bobsqarepants3069
      @bobsqarepants3069 4 года назад +5

      agreed, especially matching the timing marks. Some young guy with his first car thinks this will be a snack ... doesnt line up the timing marks and .... lets just hope it is a non interference engine he (or she ) is working on. I would not want heat applied to the crank bolt on my car... if you over do it , it most likely will damage the front engine seal.

    • @shorelined1
      @shorelined1 Год назад

      I appreciate your input. Interesting about coolant. I only know about things on my car I've had to deal with, but even I wondered about keeping the timing and the heat in that proximity. I saw a video where guy changed just the bearings on one of the pulleys rattling. Idk which of mine is the culprit...yet.

    Thanks for the great video Scotty Kilmer! I volunteered to change a water pump on a friends Chevy Aveo and holy cow!!! The dumb thing held in with 3 special allen wrench bolts, can you believe that??? Then, you had to have a fancy "special tool" to undo the water pump, to which I used the umph power with some adjustable pliers instead and out it came. Bearings were shot. Put it back in to find out it is also an interferance engine and the timing marks just so happened to align just when there was pressure on the springs, so you had to have at least 3 arms to hold the engine at the right point to get the timing belt on right! Then, the dumb engineers though it would be great to make the water pump the timing belt tensioner as well. After trying to get the tension right, I stripped the allen wrench bolts and found they were over $8 a piece, and of course, a not in stock item. So I upgraded them to hex bolts and finished the job! That's the last time I'll work on those Daewoo engines!

      Scotty Kilmer I really enjoy your videos. But when doing job which invlolve timing belt, there should be pointed out to be really carefull not to change anything while that belt is off. And what I miss is how to properly put that belt on - since we are all DIYs and you are the professional (you know how to do that properly). I know there are some other videos about timing belt - but I think it sould be few words of it also here :)
      But this video will not stop me from watching your channel :)

    good vid scotty, done a few of thoes, another way is to remove the starter motor, and jam a nail bar on the ring gear, then u can loosen the front crank pully,/harmonic ballancer, bolt with a breaker bar.its a fair bit of tinkering to get at the pump.

Slip the new one half way on making sure all teeth are on the cut off the rest of the old belt. This is why I love BMWs six cylinders. Water pump is 4 bolts and can be replaced very easily in half hour or less. nothing blocking it. Germans are smart! also Scotty I hope you tightened that harmonic balancer properly and not using that ratchet as shown. The torque needed for that part is likely in the 200+ ft lb range or higher. I have a feeling that car will be back soon. Also I probably would've replaced that belt.

    How did you know the timing belt was put on correctly? What if the cam gear moved a couple degrees? Just putting a timing belt on like that seems kind of risky: what if you messed up the timing and the valves would hit the piston? Not judging but trying to learn/understand what you did, I'm still a mechanic in training (going to automotive school) and they really taught me to be very, very careful when replacing a timing belt. Thanks!

    Scotty, I've got a Subaru with 250,000 miles. When I went to put gas in it, it wouldn't start unless I pumped the gas pedal. It starts perfectly fine until the next time I put gas in it. It idles at at 300 RPM(I think it's low) and sounds like it will stall out, but won't. It stalled out once on me when I wasn't on the gas pedal while turning on to a on ramp.
    Should I look at the fuel pump or idle air control valve? Or could it just be bad gas(previous owner left 1/4 tank in for 6 months before selling)? Thanks
    BTW this video is the reason I prefer working on domestic cars. The motors aren't designed all compact so you'd have to remove a bunch of stuff just to replace one thing.

    I have exactly the same noise first on the front passenger’s side and now on the right. Doesn’t feel under hood but underneath the car like something is loose. Feels like steering wheel can be moved with one finger easily. Took to Toyota center, have Corolla, they said it’s water pump and it’s leaking but not bad enough to fix. Once it’s bad they can do it. But at this point nothing can be done. I was surprised that I have to wait till it gets bad and I have to listen to that irritating sound, however sometimes it stops when a car is in motion at 40mp or more. I asked them if it’s dangerous and they said no. So weird and it’s Toyota Center. They just changed oil and did multipoint inspection and said it’s ok. May be they just don’t want to deal with that since it’s complicated. Or may be it’s something different. But the sound is exactly the same as in Scotty’s video when I start a car. What do you think? Thank you.

      Logan Klaeren I don´t think so Water pumps are simple devices new one should be OK if it was assembled right these two problems may be bad timing and bad work while replacing the timing belt

    lol... my God, Scotty. Turn a 4 hour shade tree job into a 3 minute video, I can just see the people who watch these and go "I CAN DO THAT!", start on Saturday morning... Monday they call in to work because their car is tore apart, have it towed to a shop with a box of all the stuff in the back seat LOL.

    You coulda just titled this thing "Changing a timing belt" Same job. I did this same thing on a 2002 Accord. The harmonic balancer bolt would NOT come off even when jacking up the firkin breaker bar, the breaker bar bowed and it lifted the car off the jack stands. Bolt wouldn't budge. there is 1 tool that did it though. A big fat heavy "harmonic balancer socket" for the impact wrench. now that thing worked.

    I have a question about a 1999 Toyota Camry. Its a V6 and the steering seems very hard at times. I popped the hood and I noticed that the power steering fluid is over full and I have not added any fluid to the reservoir.
    what would be the cause of my problem??
    can anyone give me any ideas

    Scotty, Im having some issue with the alternator or the battery or both. I changed the battery just 6 months ago. Alternator was checked also. Now battery reads 12V prior to crank. After cranking the engine, reading peaks to 14.25V (engine cold) and when it warms, it reads 14.1V. In the dash, sometimes, battery light shows up, not solid, sometimes flashing, sometimes a bit dimm. After 30 minutes turn off the engine, voltage drop to 12,6V almost inmediately. and lights dimm. Battery is "supposed" to be almost new. The car is used every two weeks. I know that this scenario is not good for the battery. Is this the root cause ?. Could be that the alternator that is charging poorly ? Car is a 96 Accord. Dont get why the dash light shows on 14,1V. Are those hondas expected to charge at a higher voltage ?. also noticed, some voltage flickering on the dash lights, go dimm 2 o 3 times and them go bright again .In that condition, engine slow down a bit. So Im really confussed. I measured the voltage drop from V- terminal and chasis and is about 60mV. So is not a ground issue. Measured the drop from V+ to the main fuse box and is about 180mV (both measurement made with the car idling). Thanks and cheers

      Scotty Kilmer Hey, no autozones here.. But, yeah, battery stores check the batteries for free (which I dont trust, because, they live from selling batteries). What is the charging voltage Scotty ?. Ive read also that this light on the dash could be a ruined ECM as the alt gone wrong because sensing circutry is in the ECM module. I really hope not get to this scenerio. Forgot to tell but the batt is a REALLY GOOD ONE, installed in an stealership, you know. I love your vids. I try to get as much knowledge as I can, but I wont mess with my car. Accords of this vintage are expensive to get on the road (at least here) Good cars, trusty and reliable. As used car with 205.000K, not the best choice IMHO. Many thanks Scotty for you vids and the effort you put on responding / reading. Cheers

    Hey scotty, I have a 2006 trailblazer ls, whenever I have my airconditioning on the pump will have a steady clicking sound but it isn't constant. It will go away with certain rpms as well. Any clue as to what the issue may be and do you have any suggestions to fix it?

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  9 лет назад

      controversial nonsense with cj and james check the compressor, and if it keeps clicking on and off, either it's going bad, or there's a pressure problem causing the switch to turn it on and off

    Always loved Honda, but I think this illustrates why they usually cost an arm and a leg to fix. For whatever reason, Honda always seemed to like rolling their engines up in a ball and just tossing them into their cars.

      what? Hondas are usually cheaper than most other cars to fix. Also all my technician friends say they are the easiest to work on.

    • @TheRick2130
      @TheRick2130 9 лет назад

      Jesse Silva they are not cheap, if you compare domestic and import parts price there a huge difference and when it comes to electronics failure on imports its pain in the wallet.. just did a toyota avalon its has a hvac actuator failure cost around $600 compare to domestic vehicle its only cost $20 to $120

    • @Jsbs1991f
      @Jsbs1991f 9 лет назад +1

      ebu touy not really that bad for honda, they have a ton of aftermarket parts for them. Also domestic cars are not that cheap and they have their problems too. Also believe honda is one of the most reliable car brands out there. Fyi I'm not a honda fanboy, i actually hate those cars.

    How many people will follow this guide and make their timing out when putting the belt on, the most important step is missed out people... you need to mark with tipex or a marker the crank sprocket and cam sprocket so they go back together at the exact same position

    Hey Scott I have a huge question how do I fix the steering shaft noises from my 2001 Chevy Suburban???? I have never had this problem with any other Vehicle it rattles thumps and generally sounds like your going to loose Components? ???? My mechanic said my steering , brakes and motor mounts and all the other suspension is in good order???????? Also any videos on replacing rusted backing plates?

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  9 лет назад

      Lawrence Eich no backing plate video yet. But really, a 14 year old Burb will make noises, they don't make em like they used to. Turn the radio up AFTER making sure nothing is actually falling off by jacking it up on all 4 wheels and checking for play and lwear.

      Lawrence Eich how to fix steering shaft noise, change them. they have 2 shaft design and usually on this gm trucks is the lower fail. but if your not sure get a second set of hands move steering wheel back and forth while you feel the lower shaft if theres a play
